Summary
  • Deadpool & Wolverine is expected to feature a huge number of cameos from Fox's X-Men franchise and the MCU's history.
  • One theory suggests Deadpool and Wolverine could build a new multiversal Avengers team in the MCU's Phase 5.
  • This team could be composed of the MCU's suspected "Anchor" heroes, including Doctor Strange and others.
A wild MCU Phase 5 theory suggests that Marvel Studios' upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine could feature the formation of a new team of Avengers, comprising heroes from across the multiverse. Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine is set to bring Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine into the MCU for the first time, continuing the pair's adventures from 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise. This will mark the first time these two iconic Marvel heroes have been seen together on-screen since 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but they won't be the only Fox characters making their return in the MCU's Phase 5.
Other characters from 20th Century Fox's previous superhero franchises have also been confirmed to be returning in Deadpool & Wolverine. Elektra, Lady Deathstrike, Pyro, Sabretooth, Toad, Azazel, and more will be joining Deadpool and Wolverine on their multiversal journey, but Deadpool & Wolverine is also expected to feature cameos from past MCU heroes, too. While Captain America and Iron Man will appear in archive footage, Chris Hemsworth's Thor is also set to appear in Deadpool & Wolverine, but one major Phase 5 theory suggests that a shocking number of unexpected heroes could have a crucial role in the upcoming project.

Deadpool & Wolverine’s Multiversal Avengers Team Theory Explained Since Deadpool & Wolverine will see the titular heroes embark on a mission for the Time Variance Authority in the Void at the End of Time, there has been speculation that Tom Hiddleston's Loki, the new guardian of the multiverse, could make an appearance in the movie. This idea forms the basis of a wild theory posed by Austin Verse, which posits that Loki could recruit Deadpool and Wolverine to build a powerful Avengers-esque team comprising variant heroes from across the MCU's multiverse. This could create the opportunity for many unexpected cameos that haven't yet been confirmed or even theorized.
This could see Deadpool and Wolverine gathering support from mutant heroes residing in the Void, but one crucial scene in Deadpool & Wolverine's first official trailer could reinforce the idea of the pair's multiversal journey. While Deadpool & Wolverine's actual storyline hasn't been revealed, the trailer shows the pair jumping through a portal similar to those created by the Masters of the Mystic Arts. This could take Deadpool and Wolverine anywhere, perhaps even to other timelines, where they could acquire more heroes for their multiversal Avengers team, setting this team up to have a key role in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Multiversal MCU Heroes Could Be Anchors Of Their Universes Austin Verse's theory plays off of the recent idea that certain heroes across the MCU's multiverse could be "Anchors" in their respective realities. This multiversal concept is still purely speculation, and hasn't yet been mentioned in the MCU, but could make sense within the greater storyline of the Multiverse Saga. Anchors are supposedly key figures in their reality, so much so that when an Anchor dies or disappears from their home universe, that reality would begin to decay until there's nothing left. Along with incursions, this could be one of the most destructive concepts introduced into the MCU's Multiverse Saga.
While the idea of Anchor heroes poses a significant threat to the multiverse, this concept could also prove crucial to the formation of Deadpool and Wolverine's multiversal Avengers team. Austin Verse suggests that Loki could inform Deadpool and Wolverine about Anchors across the multiverse, and could urge the duo to form a powerful team comprising these Anchor heroes in order to fight a bigger battle in the MCU's future. While this could lead to the destruction of several universes, desperate times call for desperate measures, and Loki could foresee a looming danger that necessitates bringing this formidable superhero team together.
The concept of Anchor heroes bears similarities to Molecule Man's role in Marvel Comics' 2015 Secret Wars event, perhaps giving this speculation some weight.
Doctor Strange’s Phase 4 Story Sets Him Up Perfectly For A Multiversal Avengers Team While the idea of Anchor heroes hasn't yet been mentioned in the MCU, previous comments from Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige could hint at Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange being the Anchor of the MCU's Earth-616. Back in March 2022, Cumberbatch was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Feige gave a powerful speech celebrating the MCU mainstay and acclaimed actor (via Digital Spy). During this speech, Feige noted that, due to Cumberbatch seeing "tremendous potential" in Doctor Strange, the character has become "the anchor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe," perhaps teasing this position before it was theorized.
Benedict has turned this character into an icon, appearing in three of the top six films of all time. It's been quite a journey. I remember our very first meeting was set up as a general, and we wanted to pitch him this great character, and before we could, he said 'so tell me about Doctor Strange', because you knew. You've always seen the tremendous potential in this character and, because of that, you've become the anchor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the only actor capable of guiding us through the madness of the multiverse.
Doctor Strange's storyline throughout the MCU's Phase 4 could support this theory, and set him up to be the perfect candidate to join Deadpool and Wolverine's multiversal Avengers team. Through his experiences in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Doctor Strange knows more about the multiverse and its intricacies than most other MCU characters. Strange has been set up as a key figure in the Multiverse Saga, and his travels with Clea to thwart an incursion will reveal even more to him, so he would be a huge asset to Deadpool and Wolverine's team.
Who Else Could Be In Deadpool & Wolverine’s Multiversal Avengers Team? Close Marvel Studios has introduced many multiversal heroes into the MCU since the Multiverse Saga kicked off in 2021, and any number of these heroes could be included in Deadpool and Wolverine's Avengers team. Spider-Man: No Way Home debuted Spider-Man variants in the form of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, and they are heavily suspected to be returning in Phase 6's Avengers: Secret Wars. Earth-838's Illuminati team, despite being killed by the Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, could also return to the MCU, or perhaps their as-yet-unseen allies could join Deadpool and Wolverine to avenge them.
It's unclear which, if any, of these heroes are Anchors, so it's possible Deadpool and Wolverine's multiversal Avengers team could include variants that audiences haven't yet been introduced to. Since Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. have been rumored to be returning to the MCU, the team could include variants of Captain America and Iron Man. This team could even feature X-Men members from the universe seen in The Marvels' post-credits scene, perhaps Beast or Binary. If this theory comes to fruition, Deadpool & Wolverine could feature the formation of perhaps the most powerful Avengers team in the MCU's history.
