The Darkest Willy Wonka Theory Is Definitively Settled In 2024... By The MCU

Summary
  • Emma Corrin's portrayal of Cassandra Nova draws inspiration from Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka, confirming Wonka as a villain.
  • Willy Wonka's subtle cruelty, disguised by his quirky persona, resonates as a compelling yet dark character in popular culture.
  • Corrin's nuance in portraying Cassandra Nova hints at a deep and complex villain, mirroring Deadpool's nuanced character.
The character of Willy Wonka as played by Gene Wilder has long been the source of debate about whether the character is actually a villain, but Deadpool & Wolverine star Emma Corrin has set the record straight. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory came out in 1971, and brought the popular Roald Dahl story to life. However, just like the book that inspired it, the motivations behind the mysterious Willy Wonka were unclear, but the MCU has finally cleared up any confusion about the character.
In a recent interview with GQ, Emma Corrin, who plays Cassandra Nova in the upcoming Deadpool sequel, discusses her inspirations behind the character and her performance. They then reference "“one of the best villains of all time,” Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka. “There’s something extravagant in Gene Wilder’s performance,”" (via GQ). By clearly asserting the character is a villain, and then taking inspiration from that performance to create one of the most imposing new characters in the MCU, Corrin has definitively proven Willy Wonka was always a villain.

Deadpool & Wolverine's Villain Inspiration Further Proves That Willy Wonka Is A Movie Villain Wonka Was Never A Hero Close The debate around Willy Wonka's character has been an enduring dispute between fans since the movie came out in 1971, but with the rise of the internet and forums, the discussion has had a constant home on the internet. As if the character having lured children to a factory with candy, and then sent them to roam around his deadly experimental headquarters, leading to the children meeting cruel and unusual fates, wasn't enough of a giveaway, Corrin's choice to draw inspiration from the villain solidifies the facts. Wonka may be all smiles and appear incredibly generous, but the character is incredibly dark.
The thing that makes Wonka such a spectacular and worthwhile villain is how he manages to enact these cruel punishments while smiling and appearing to be a friend. Wonka is subtle and dangerous, and despite what he chooses to let others see being his surface level response, the character clearly gets joy from pain and suffering. He is wacky, quirky, and full of enthusiastic, exciting energy, but that conceals a much darker motivation for any of his actions.

Why The MCU Cassandra Nova's Movie Inspiration Is Promising For Deadpool & Wolverine It Will Make For A Quirky Nuanced Villain Close Despite the character not presenting overtly as a villain, the characterization which Wilder provides Wonka makes them compelling. For decades, people have continued to praise his performance, and dig deep into the nuances of the character. Despite overtly evil acts happening on the screen, like Wonka allowing children to suffer terrible trauma and potentially even death, enslaving an entire race of Oompa Loompas, and intentionally scaring children and adults on bizarre boat rides, people still question the characters' motivation.
If Corrin is able to deliver even a fraction of that kind of nuance and subtlety, expanding the character of Cassandra Nova beyond an ordinary villain and into something that feels deeper, and harder to simply categorize as a villain, it will be an incredible villain for Deadpool & Wolverine. While movies often neatly place their heroes and villains into a box of good or bad, Deadpool has never been that easy to define. The character is frequently heroic, but he's no hero. It stands to reason that the villain of the story should be just as nuanced.
