How Old The Superman & Lois Cast Is Compared To Their Characters

Summary
  • The cast of Superman & Lois reflects the more mature ages of characters, with some actors being close in age to their roles.
  • Tyler Hoechlin is 36 playing a 43-year-old Superman, with the age disparity showcasing intentional character choices.
  • Elizabeth Tulloc, at 43, embodies Lois Lane perfectly, with accurate age representation.
The cast of Superman & Lois reflect the more mature ages of the Superman mythos' characters compared to most versions. Set within the CW's sprawling Arrowverse, Superman & Lois describes the adventures of an older, more experienced iteration of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, who are already married with two children, Jonathan and Jordan Kent. By the start of the first season, set in release year 2021, both Clark and Lois have already had time to gather years of experience in the field as a superhero and star reporter, respectively.
Unlike many other CW dramas, the cast of Superman & Lois have actually been incredibly thoughtful when it comes to casting. The series has been good about sticking to casting choices as close in canonical age to their characters as possible, with performers' real life ages sometimes even influencing their character's age. While not every major character in Superman & Lois has a hard-confirmed age, there are, of course, still some small differences in maturity from the actors to their characters.
12 Tyler Hoechlin (36) As Clark Kent/Superman (About 43) Hoechlin is almost a decade younger than his character Clark Kent's age in Superman & Lois is never outright stated, but can be narrowed down to about 43 or so by the premiere of season 3. It's known that Superman & Lois' Clark graduated high school in 1998 thanks to a flashback in season 1, episode 11 "A Brief Reminiscence In-Between Cataclysmic Events." Assuming he graduated around age 18, Clark's age should hover around 41 during the show's start in release year 2021. Add in the two years that have passed since the start of the series, confirmed with the twins' 16th birthday, and Superman is age 43 in season 3.
With almost a decade in disparity between him and his character, Tyler Hoechlin has the greatest gap between his actual age and his fictional one in the entire series. However, it's likely this was an intentional choice, as Superman's Kryptonian biology is known to age slower than that of a human's. Thusly, Hoechlin's dashing good looks at 36 aren't out of place on a more mature Superman.
11 Elizabeth Tulloc (43) As Lois Lane (42) Elizabeth Tulloc is one year older than Lois Lane Lois Lane is one of the few characters in Superman & Lois to have a confirmed birth year, with season 3, episode 4 "Too Close To Home" establishing Lois as being born sometime in 1981. This would put her at 40 years old when the series began in 2021, aging to 42 with the 2 years that have passed going to season 3. Unlike most versions of Lois Lane, the go-getter journalist is a little younger than Clark, making it all the more impressive that she was able to establish an esteemed journalism career prior to meeting him.
Amazingly, Lois' actress, Elizabeth Tulloc, is right on the money for age, being 43 years old. It's worth mentioning that at 7 years older than Tyler Hoechlin, Tulloc does make Lois appear to be slightly older than Clark, even if that isn't actually the case, further demonstrating the Kryptonian's resilient DNA. Still, Tulloc is a stunning actress that embodies the courage and refinement of a loving Lois Lane in her early 40s.
10 Alex Garfin (20) As Jordan Kent (16) Alex Garfin is 4 years older than Jordan Kent in season 3 What makes Superman & Lois truly unique among the many Superman-focused shows that have come and gone in TV history is the presence of Jordan and Jonathan, Lois and Clark's twin children. Born in 2006, the shier, more troubled Jordan is 14 when the series begins, and ages to 16 over the course of the show's first three seasons. Unlike Jonathan, Jordan ends up developing powers just like his father's, and goes on to become Superboy.
At 20 years old, Alex Garfin is very believable as a high-school teenager. Due to strict limitations on working with child actors, hiring young adults like Garfin for teen roles is common practice in the TV industry, making his 4-year age discrepancy with Jordan Kent nothing surprising. Barely a legal adult when the series began in 2021, Alex Garfin has maintained an incredible performance as Jordan in Superman & Lois.
9 Michael Bishop (19 to 21) As Jonathan Kent (16) Michael Bishop is at least 3 years older than his screen counterpart Clark and Lois' other twin child, Jonathan Kent was named after Clark's father, being the more outgoing and extroverted brother though without the consistent powers wielded by Jordan. Being a twin, Jonathan is also 14 at the start of the series, aging to 16 by season 3. However, Jonathan Kent has been played by two actors, making his apparent age fluctuate somewhat over the course of the series.
In season 1 and 2, Jonathan was played by Jordan Elsass, who was 20 when the show started. After season 2, Jordan Elsass left Superman & Lois for personal reasons, being replaced by Australian actor Michael Bishop in season 3 and beyond. Bishop's exact age isn't known, but is known to have attended Australia's National Academy of Performing Arts in grade 4 in the year 2012 (via Napa.com), placing him in an age range between 19 and 21 years old.
8 Erik Valdez (44) As Kyle Cushing (About 43) Erik Valdez is only a year older than Kyle Cushing The gruff Kyle Cushing is the fire chief of Smallville Fire Department and a recurring civilian character throughout Superman & Lois. Having gone to high school with Clark Kent and Lana Lang, competing with the former for the affections of the latter, Kyle was likely in the same grade as the two, placing him at about the same age range as Clark, around 43 years old. Kyle is an original creation of Superman & Lois, not based on any pre-existing DC Comics character.
Only a year older than his character, Erik Valdez is barely tied with Elizabeth Tulloc for being the actor closest in age to his Superman & Lois counterpart. Valdez looks incredible for his age, making it often hard to believe that Kyle is in the same age range as Superman, Lois, and Lana. But at only one year off in age from his character, the Erik Valdez is inarguably authentic as Kyle Cushing.
7 Inde Navarrette (23) As Sarah Cortez (16) Inde Navarrette is 7 years older than Sarah Cortez One of the more prominent members of Superman & Lois' younger cast, Sarah Cortez is the daughter of Kyle Cushing and Lana Lang. A troubled teenager with a gifted singing voice, Sarah was born in 2006, the same year as the Kent twins. Notably, Sarah has a quinceañera for her 15th birthday in season 2, meaning that, like the boys, she has likely aged to 16 by the end of season 3.
Sarah's actress is Inde Navarrette, who is 23 years old going into Superman & Lois season 4. Though quite a bit older than Jonathan and Jordan's actors, not to mention Sarah herself, Navarrette is still well believable as a hot-blooded teenager in Smallville High School. She also played a high schooler in Netflix's 13 Reasons Why from 2017 to 2020, giving her plenty of experience in such a role going into her Arrowverse debut.
6 Wolé Parks (41) As John Henry Irons (Early 40s) Wolé Parks' age may influence that of his character Perhaps the most prominent recurring DC hero to be featured in Superman & Lois outside of the Man of Steel himself, John Henry Irons began the show as the Stranger, a mysterious entity in power armor who harassed Superman. The Arrowverse's take on the DC universe's Steel, John Henry Irons has a lengthy history, first a soldier from Earth-TUD22, possibly graduating from Yale sometime before his military career, before losing his wife and becoming stranded in Earth-TUD25. Irons is never given a definitive age.
John Irons' actor, Wolé Parks, is currently 41, putting him at around 38 years old when Superman & Lois first began airing. Parks' age is the only real factor to go by when it comes to guessing that of his character, with no clear canon age to measure by. Considering Irons is meant to be a sort of contemporary to Superman, even replacing him for a stint in the series, it makes sense to tentatively place them around the same age.
5 Adam Rayner (46) As Tal-Rho (55) Adam Rayner is 9 years younger than Tal-Rho One of the most prominent recurring villains in Superman & Lois, Tal-Rho is one of the last remaining Kryptonians alive. Rho was revealed to be born in 1968, about a decade before the fall of Krypton, in season 1, episode 11 "A Brief Reminiscence In-Between Cataclysmic Events." This would put him at 53 years old when he appeared in the first season, adopting the human moniker of Morgan Edge. As of the narrative present, he is now 55.
Tal-Rho is played by Adam Rayner, a 46-year-old actor. Like Tyler Hoechlin's Superman, Rayner is nearly a decade younger than his on-screen presence, a disparity which can be chalked up to the Kryptonians' slowed age process following puberty. Younger versions of Tal-Rho at 10 years old and 19 years old were also played by actors Jack Rehbein and Ben Cockell in flashbacks, respectively. Tal-Rho hasn't appeared since Superman & Lois' season 2 finale.
4 Dylan Walsh (60) As Sam Lane (Mid-To-Late 60s) Dylan Walsh is likely a little bit younger than Sam Lane General Samuel Lane is the most prominent member of the extended Kent-Lane family in Superman & Lois, especially considering Jonathan and Martha Kent's death prior to the beginning of season 1. Compared to most iterations of General Lane, Superman & Lois' Sam is surprisingly open-minded, being an excellent grandfather to the Kent twins and understanding Clark's responsibility as Superman. Samuel Lane is never given an exact age.
Dylan Walsh, who plays Sam, is 60 years old, putting him at around 57 by the premiere of the series. While he may not have a guaranteed age, it's likely Sam Lane is a decent deal older than this, already a retired general with a decorated military career by the debut of season 1. Considering the maximum age a general can be in the U.S. Army before mandatory retirement is 68, and General Lane has confirmed to have retired by choice before this point, his age is likely in the mid-to-late 60s.
3 Tayler Buck (20) As Natalie Lane Irons (About 17) Tayler Buck is around 3 years older than Natalie Lane Irons Another recurring teen character to round out Superman & Lois' high school cast, Natalie Lane Irons has shared the unique experience of vigilantism and superhero parentage with Jordan Kent. The daughter of John Henry Irons and Earth-TUD22's version of Lois Lane, Natalie Lane Irons traveled with her father to a new reality, struggling to adapt. Between her fleeing the danger of her original home and transferring high schools, it's likely that Natalie is perhaps a year older than the Kent twins despite sharing a grade with them, putting her at around 17 years old.
Natalie Lane Irons is played by Tayler Buck, an American actress. Buck is also known for appearing in the Annabelle films as Kate in Annabelle: Creation. Like the other younger actors, Buck is very believable as a teenager, only missing the mark in reality by a handful of years.
2 Emmanuelle Chriqui (46) As Lana Lang (About 43) Emmanuelle Chriqui is three years older than Lana Lang Clark Kent's original love interest, clearly proving he has a soft spot for outspoken women with alliterative "L" names, Superman & Lois depicts Lana Lang is a motivated community leader in Smallville. In her growth throughout the series, Lana ends up running for and winning the Smallville mayoral election, making her an official leader. In the same 1998 graduating class as Clark and Kyle, Lana is also about 41 at the time of the show's first episode, aging up to 43 by season 3.
Lana Lang's actress is Emmanuelle Chriqui. At 46, the Canadian actress is certainly appropriately-casted, only being about three years older than Lang. It's worth noting that Superman & Lois isn't Chriqui's only brush with DC Comics characters, lending her voice to the role of Sapphire Stagg in the 2013 animated series Beware the Batman.
1 Michael Cudlitz (59) As Lex Luthor (About 59) Michael Cuditz's age is likely informing Lex Luthor's Compared to most live-action versions of Lex Luthor, Superman & Lois paints a very different picture. Rather than being an old friend of Clark's similar in age, as in Smallville, or an ambiguously middle-aged corporate hotshot, Lex Luthor in the Superman & Lois is well into his late 50s. First appearing in season 3, Luthor is among the series' many characters to never be given a precise age, but has already spent nearly 20 years of his life in prison, leaving him incredibly hardened and wrathful by the time of his introduction.
Luthor is played intimidatingly by Michael Cuditz, aged 59. It's likely that, as with John Henry Irons, Cuditz's real-life age is the best indicator available for Luthor's age in the show. Though a very different iteration on the classic supervillain, Cuditz's more weathered Luthor made for a force to be reckoned with in season 3 of Superman & Lois.
