I Was Right About Superman & Lois" Wildest Ending Theory & I Honestly Can"t Believe It
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Superman & Lois season 4, episode 10.
The final episode of
Superman & Lois confirmed arguably the wildest theory I thought I had for the ending of the show based on its plot thus far, and despite literally predicting it beforehand, I"m still shocked it actually happened. Superman & Lois season 4 has pulled no punches when it comes to plot twists and major revelations, with the last chapter of the show killing off and reviving Superman, giving Jonathan powers, and having Lex Luthor meet his estranged daughter all before the final episode itself. As such, expectations were understandably high for what the final part of the live-action Superman show would reveal.
Superman & Lois season 4, episode 10 pays off these expectations and then some, providing both heartwarming moments and some unexpected emotional gut punches to complete its overall arc. While the majority of the finale"s biggest and most emotional moments are saved for its timeskip ending, one notable example comes before it, with the fate of none other than the show"s version of Doomsday. Though this confirmed a theory about Doomsday"s Superman & Lois ending that I and likely plenty of other viewers had, the way it was executed still made for a decidedly surprising addition to the finale.
Doomsday Did Actually Sacrifice Himself In The Superman & Lois Finale Close Superman and Doomsday"s last fight sees Clark finally allow his allies to help him in the fray, with Jordan and Jonathan leading Doomsday into a chase that closes with him charging into Steel"s hammer. Following this, Superman flies Doomsday up to the sun, intending to finish things for once and for all by taking him into the sun and destroying him. However, with Clark"s powers steadily waning because of his new implanted human heart, getting Doomsday into the sun seems a difficult task, and one that may well kill Clark in order for him to ensure Doomsday is also destroyed.
Just before Clark goes to begin the final leg of the journey to the sun, Doomsday stops him, looking at him intently, as a flashback sequence shows his memories of when he was Bizarro, and his time with his own family as the Bizarro world"s Superman. Seemingly regaining his awareness for one last crucial moment - and becoming aware he can let his alternate universe doppleganger have a life with his family, even if he can"t return to his own - Doomsday allows Clark to push him into the sun, wherein he"s seemingly annihilated.
Bizarro first appeared in the show in Superman & Lois season 2, episode 1, which released in January 2022.
Despite theorizing that the ending being set up for Doomsday by the events of the show was the character"s sacrifice, the moment still came as a surprise to me, in no small part because the action that comes before this quiet and impactful scene suggests another all-out brawl is how things must end. However, the very end of Superman & Lois season 4, episode 9 also certainly made sure to keep the chances of this story possibility looking less set in stone.
Why Doomsday's Sacrifice Makes Sense Even After Episode 9 Teased It Was Impossible
Image Made By Zoe Miskelly Superman & Lois season 4, episode 9 manages to make it less clear whether Doomsday will indeed sacrifice himself as I and others speculated he would by having Doomsday enter a berserker mode where he seemed entirely uncontrollable. Since Lois was previously able to convince him to leave her family alone in Superman & Lois season 4, episode 5 by comparing Doomsday"s family to her own, the fact she believed she was unable to now reach him as a result of his enraged state suggested the only way forward now was for the mutated Bizarro and Superman to duke it out one last time.
However, Doomsday getting the beatdown he does in episode 10 may have helped bring him down from this state - alongside Superman bringing him next to the Earth"s sun, which weakened Bizarro before his mutation, and may still have an effect on him due to its sheer potency despite Luthor seemingly using it to kill Bizarro during his mutation into Doomsday, and the character generally growing invulnerable to methods used to kill him previously. From here, Doomsday regaining one last moment of clarity and using it to ensure he doesn"t keep being forced to hurt people does make sense.
I'm Glad Superman & Lois Ended Doomsday's Story With His Sacrifice Close When I initially watched Superman & Lois combine Doomsday and Bizarro"s stories together by having the alternate universe Superman be repeatedly killed and mutated into a warped form, I wasn"t totally sure what to make of it. However, the story that progressed showed exactly why the series made this decision, since Bizarro"s past adds both more history to this version of Doomsday, and an emotional core that makes you feel at least a little bit sorry for the character and all he"s lost, even when he"s pulverizing Superman.
One of the most interesting aspects of Bizarro"s story is that, while he was an antagonist for a good portion of it, he wasn"t truly evil, and was ultimately guided by the same desire to protect his home and family that Superman himself was. As such, letting Doomsday sacrifice himself to protect Clark and his family has real emotional weight, and ensures
Superman & Lois provides a suitable sendoff to one of its most complex long-running characters.
