I’m so relieved that Ryan Reynolds’ wackiest idea for the third Deadpool film was scrapped in favor of Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor has always excelled in comedic projects, but he really started to shine when he got to star in his first solo Deadpool project. The character was a big hit with fans, causing there to be a high demand for a full trilogy. Since Reynolds’ became so synonymous with the character, he was also given much more creative freedom with the studio.
Deadpool & Wolverine ultimately happened because of Reynolds’ pitch to Hugh Jackman, and fans are definitely grateful that he managed to make such a great closer to the Deadpool trilogy happen. Before Jackman came onto the project though, Reynolds had a long list of ideas for where the third Deadpool film could go. One of his most ridiculous pitches was a team-up between Deadpool and the hunter that killed Bambi’s mom. Disney axed it straight away for obvious reasons, but just thinking about a world where that film was made makes me even more grateful for the existence of Deadpool & Wolverine.

It’s a ridiculous idea that was likely a result of the actor throwing everything he could at the studio. However, the fact that he did come up with the idea means that he did envision the final product to an extent, and I doubt that it would’ve been better than the film we actually ended up getting. Deadpool & Wolverine set the bar so high in terms of action, nostalgia, and fan service that it’s hard to see any other idea coming close to its effectiveness.
There is the argument that a collaboration between Deadpool and the hunter who killed Bambi’s mom wouldn’t be the craziest thing for the studio to do with the character. Deadpool is known for his fourth-wall-breaking jokes and wild nature. If any character were to reach into the Disney intellectual property and use it as a joke, it would be Deadpool. It ultimately made more sense though for the meta nature of the film to come from within the Fox franchise, and for the film not to go too outlandish with the narrative.

The Bambi storyline would’ve obviously felt out of place in the Deadpool trilogy considering that there’s no reason for the two intellectual properties to interact. More importantly, the storyline would’ve raised too many questions about the Marvel and Disney canon. With the Multiverse Saga changing up the MCU in the past few years, there is already enough confusion about what is canon and what isn’t. Throwing in additional characters from the Walt Disney brand would just add more clutter where it isn’t needed.

Posts It’s not impossible for a future Deadpool project to explore the character’s place in the wider Disney-verse, but the closing film of the trilogy was not the place to do so. Considering how Disney reacted when Reynolds pitched the idea in the first place, using the Bambi storyline would’ve limited a lot of what Marvel could do with the film’s R rating. The studio needed to focus on the dark humor that made the first two films enjoyable, then add in a property like the X-Men that wouldn’t raise as much confusion as the hunter who killed Bambi’s mother would.

In the Assembled: The Making of Deadpool & Wolverine documentary on Disney+, it was revealed that Reynolds had come up with almost 20 ideas for the film’s potential direction. Some notable ones included a smaller budget Sundance-style film featuring Deadpool in his suit but no action sequences, and a remake of Thor: The Dark World that would stop to reveal another Deadpool-related story halfway. Some of the ideas were reminiscent of the “Marvel Jesus” title Wade is given in the film, as these films would’ve shown Deadpool inserted into various points of the MCU.
It’s impressive that Reynolds was able to come up with so many ideas for Deadpool 3, but even more impressive that those ideas ended up unused. The fact that a team-up with Wolverine was what Reynolds and the studio finally settled on just shows that it was the right idea to bring to life all along, both in terms of narrative and the actors’ personal passion. Some may argue about what truly made Deadpool & Wolverine so successful, but there’s no denying that the studio chose the perfect story, especially considering some of the unused ideas that were thrown out there.
