"It Felt Undone": Andrew Garfield Reflects On Returning For Spider-Man: No Way Home After The Amazing Spider-Man 3"s Cancellation

Three years after the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield gets candid about showing up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. While the Multiverse Saga is getting further into its storytelling, many are still looking back at 2021"s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which brought Tobey Maguire, Tom Holland, and Garfield"s Peter Parkers together for the first time on the big screen in what was an epic celebration of the web-crawler"s live-action history. However, when it came time for Garfield to suit up again, it was a bigger journey than many may have realized.
During Variety"s Actors on Actors segment featuring Ryan Reynolds and Garfield, the two Marvel stars spoke about the latter"s return to the role of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home several years after he was initially supposed to star in the cancelled The Amazing Spider-Man 3. For Garfield, he felt a sense of not being fully done with the web-slinger, sharing the following about taking part in Spider-Man: No Way Home:
Lovely, just lovely. It"s not that I missed it. It felt undone, it felt undone for me, like I imagine you"ve felt with your version of that. It was just very gratifying, it was very like... Y"know, it"s like you"re invited to a party and then the party ends slightly prematurely than you wanted it to end, and then you"re like, I"ve gotta reckon with being disinvited to this party.
And that"s when the work happens, that"s when you start to really deal with your own stuff and your own relationship to self, relationship to perception, relationship to validation or to inclusion, disclusion. But it"s all inside job stuff, there"s nothing to do with the outside. It"s just like you and where have I felt not invited to the party and why is this hitting me in this way? So it was like a few years of that kind of... And I"m so grateful for it, in retrospect, and even during it I was like, yeah, this is soul work.
It"s so funny that it"s been prompted by this very... But not funny at all because it"s like the three-year-old—one of the first photos of me as a three-year-old is in a Spider-Man costume that my mother made out of felt. So it"s f-cking, like, it is primal and I"m like, "Oh my god this person, this character, it means so fucking much to me." [...]
But coming back, and Amy Pascal reaching out and asking me about it, it was like, yeah, being re-welcomed to the party. And it could be a party finally because—kind of what you said about Deadpool being more of an adjacent, peripheral, like the more scarce character. There was something so soothing about it being a playpen for the first time, for me and Tobey. [...] The pressure was on Tom [Holland]. Tom had to hold that universe together.
What Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man Return Comments Mean Close Anyone who has followed Garfield"s entire journey with The Amazing Spider-Man movies is aware that the fallout of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was extremely chaotic, to say the least. Despite The Amazing Spider-Man 2 being received with mixed reactions, the sequel was still a profit to the point where another film was going to happen. Following the Sony hack, which revealed details of Garfield"s reported firing from The Amazing Spider-Man 3, that is why it was such a big deal that he came back for Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Related Why The Amazing Spider-Man 3 Was Canceled Andrew Garfield"s Peter Parker emerged as an MVP of Spider-Man: No Way Home, but here"s why he never starred in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
Posts If Spider-Man: No Way Home proved anything, it was that many are still invested in Garfield"s version of Spider-Man, especially given how abruptly his franchise was brought to an end. The fact that Garfield was happy with what they wanted to do with his iteration of Peter, thus making him willing to come back, speaks volumes, as he could have simply walked away from being part of the Spider-Man: No Way Home cast. But instead, Garfield got to make a marvelous return as his Spider-Man variant and also get good amount of resolution to the ending of The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Our Take On Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man Return Comments From everything that Garfield said in response to Reynolds, time will tell if he will ever be back as Spider-Man, but chances definitely feel good rather than the opposite. With the Multiverse Saga getting closer to its end, it remains to be seen if Garfield"s Spider-Man will be in Avengers: Doomsday and/or Avengers: Secret Wars. But until then, fans can rewatch Garfield teaming up with Maguire and Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
