I’m Terrified Superman Will Die Again In The Superman & Lois Season 4 Finale

Superman & Lois has created a true death trap for the Man of Steel in the DC show"s final episode, and I"m genuinely worried that he will die in this last chapter of the series. Compared to many other superhero series, Superman & Lois has killed off a relatively small number of characters, with the only current major deaths among the Superman & Lois season 4 cast belonging to Superman himself - who was then brought back from the dead - and Clark"s father-in-law, General Sam Lane. That said, the stage is set for a big death to send off the live-action Superman show.
Superman & Lois has done well to balance Clark"s immense powers with making him still feel fallible, allowing us to still worry for the hero and root for his success. Superman & Lois season 4, episode 9 may well be the best example of this to date, since the way in which it combines several storylines together to suggest Clark Kent could be about to die for good is genuinely tense stuff. As such, I don"t think I"m alone in being concerned that the show has created a scenario that even a hero of Superman"s caliber can"t survive.
Superman & Lois Season 4 Has Made It Seem Almost Impossible For The Man Of Steel To Survive Its Final Episode Superman Faces The Villain That Killed Him In An Even Worse Scenario Close Superman & Lois season 4 has dedicated much of its time to creating a setup that it seems nigh impossible for Clark Kent to live through when it comes to the show"s last-ever episode. Clark is steadily growing weaker by the moment as a result of his new human heart being unable to support his Kryptonian body and its powers, with it suggested that even in a best-case scenario where he was facing no other threats, he could die prematurely because of the transplanted organ currently keeping him alive and the effect it"s having on him.
However, Superman is facing some considerable threats, and as such, seems in an even more dire situation. Superman & Lois season 4, episode 9 closes with Doomsday and the Man of Steel locked in battle, and Lex Luthor overseeing this conflict in his upgraded version of the Steel suit, no doubt waiting to take on Clark himself should the need arise. Worryingly, the episode takes the time to also reference how Clark struggled against the Steel suit when he fought against John Henry Irons prior, both before the suit"s upgrades and before Clark"s condition began to worsen.
Though Jordan and Jonathan are sure to at least try and help their dad against his foes - and indeed, their half-human physiology could come in handy if Lex tries to use Kryptonite against Clark - the training scenes in episode 9 between Superman and his kids shows that they don"t seem to be totally ready to take on Lex in his warsuit, suggesting the amount they can actively help in this conflict may be minimal. On a similar level, the continual exploration of the twins as prospective heroes does itself have some potentially worrying implications for Superman"s ending in the show.
Superman & Lois Has Increasingly Teased Jordan & Jonathan Taking Over From Superman Jordan & Jonathan's Story Means Superman & Lois Could Get Away With Killing Superman More Easily Close While Jonathan only got his powers in Superman & Lois season 4, episode 3, the series had long been teasing that Jordan - who"s powers began to be displayed from the first season - would eventually take over from his father in the future. Now Jonathan"s powers have also emerged, the teases about the pair being Superman"s successors have become even more rife, which makes sense given the final season of the show logically also needs to at least allude to what will happen in the world after the point where the show concludes.
With that said, Jordan and Jonathan"s arcs mean that Superman"s death wouldn"t be as out of place for the story. With the duo well into their superhero training now, the series would be able to balance the tragedy of this second loss with his two sons taking up his mantle and continuing his superhero mission.
While I"m really hoping it doesn"t come to that, the potential for this does make the possibility of Clark Kent dying in his final fight even more likely, since the story is built in a way where it could conceivably continue after his passing. Indeed, this was more or less proved to us with the episodes between Clark"s first death and revival at the start of season 4, setting a worrying precedent for the final installment and its section of the story.
Tyler Hoechlin's Superman Deserves A Happy Ending Superman & Lois' Hero Has Earned A Happy Ending Close Superman & Lois has taken Clark Kent through an assortment of intense trials over the course of its story. The show most notably killed him off and brought him back at the start of season 4, but also pitted him against several powerful enemies while having him balance being there for his sons and wife and the turmoil that they experienced during this time.
Topping this off by confirming in episode 9 that Clark will seemingly die early whether he"s killed or not provides one extra tragedy for the family to endure, and one that I think makes finishing him off in the finale seem like overkill, even if it still appears very possible. While Superman"s death at the start of the season could work as a kind of foreshadowing, it feels like one death is probably enough for the hero, all things considered.
Superman & Lois season 4, episode 10 releases on December 2, 2024.
With a single episode left to tie up any and all loose ends, give all the remaining characters satisfactory endings, and provide a fitting sendoff for the series and its three-year-long run, I"m hoping that the plan is to provide some exciting twists that let Superman defeat both Doomsday and Lex Luthor and survive to tell the tale, even if his days may still be somewhat numbered. However, there"s plenty of evidence to support the possibility he"ll live and the possibility he"ll die, leaving both options open as Superman & Lois heads towards its final episode.
