James Gunn Reveals What Is Going On With The DCU’s Justice League

The premiere DC superhero team appeared in just one of the DCEU"s movies, 2017"s Justice League. Director Zack Snyder later got to see his version of the film be released on Max in 2021 as Zack Snyder"s Justice League. Among the DCU"s confirmed canon characters are multiple heroes who would be great for the team, such as David Corenswet"s Superman. The Justice League has no announced movie for the DCU"s Chapter One, and Gunn might have teased why the team is taking time to appear.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn said that the Justice League does not exist yet in the DCU. Gunn"s Justice League comments came after being asked about the canon status of his DCEU projects, The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. Gunn confirmed that "they’re light canon," with all of Peacemaker, save for the DCEU"s Justice League appearing in the finale, being canon to the DCU. In November, Gunn similarly commented on Peacemaker"s canon status to the new DCU. Speaking with IGN, Gunn said that Peacemaker season 2 would "kind of deal with" the Justice League of it all. "Yeah, they’re light canon. Peacemaker is pretty straightforward, with the exception of the appearance by a certain group [the former DCEU’s Justice League] at the end. (Laughs.) They don’t exist yet. But the rule is: If we mention [something from the past] in one of the new DCU shows [and movies], then it happened. So that’s the way we’re dealing with it."
