Doctor Strange 2 Twist Lays Foundation For Marvel"s Original Sorcerer Supreme

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness seemed to change the rules regarding two mystical texts, which might have opened the door for one of Marvel Comics' most powerful sorcerers to debut in the MCU. Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange sequel released on May 6, 2022, and found Benedict Cumberbatch's titular Master of the Mystic Arts traveling the multiverse with MCU newcomer America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez. Multiverse of Madness followed on from the events of Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home, expanding on the mythos of the MCU's Multiverse Saga by introducing new realities and variants to Marvel Studios' franchise.
Following their interaction with the Illuminati on Earth-838, Doctor Strange and America Chavez's multiverse adventure brought them to the "Gap Junction" between realities, the void which housed the ancient Book of Vishanti, the antithesis of the Darkhold. In Marvel Comics, the Book of Vishanti contained spells of light magic, including those capable of eradicating vampirism, teachings on how to defend from demons, and in the MCU, houses the spells capable of battling the Scarlet Witch. The Book of Vishanti's debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness suggests that its original author might also soon make an appearance, which could bring Strange face-to-face with Marvel's original Sorcerer Supreme.
The Book Of Vishanti Might Have Survived Doctor Strange 2 During the battle against the Scarlet Witch in the Gap Junction in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Book of Vishanti is seemingly destroyed before the eyes of Doctor Strange, America Chavez, and Earth-838's Christine Palmer. However, this changes a significant point of Marvel lore surrounding the mysterious book, as Marvel Comics has established that, while single pages of the Book of Vishanti can be erased, the book itself can't be destroyed. In fact, during one comic storyline, the Book of Vishanti is seemingly destroyed during an attack on the Sanctum Sanctorum, but is revealed to have simply been transported into the hands of its original author, Agamotto.
Agamotto crafted the Book of Vishanti in Marvel Comics as a way to defend against some of the darkest magic, particularly those spells drafted by the demon Chthon which form the Darkhold, the Book of the Damned. The fact that, when thought destroyed, the Book of Vishanti made its way back to Agamotto, suggests that this could also happen in the live-action MCU, especially since Agamotto is a name that audiences are already familiar with thanks to Doctor Strange's previous appearances. Luckily, Agamotto returned the Book of Vishanti to Strange in the comics, so perhaps this could be an interesting storyline to follow in Doctor Strange 3.
Agamotto Would Be A Great Addition To The MCU Since 2016's Doctor Strange, audiences have become familiar with the name Agamotto, particularly when referred to the pendant that Doctor Strange wears around his neck: the Eye of Agamotto. While this originally acted as the vessel housing the Time Stone, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness proved that the Eye of Agamotto has power of its own, even though the Time Stone had been destroyed in Avengers: Endgame. With the Book of Vishanti now being introduced into the MCU's Phase 4, it's possible that Agamotto could make his MCU debut at some point in the franchise's future.
In Marvel Comics, Agamotto was the creation of Oshtur, the benevolent Elder Goddess of Earth, and was taught the ways of magic and sorcery by his mother, becoming the Earth's original Sorcerer Supreme. In this role, he protected reality from threats such as Dormammu and the Fallen, and even fought alongside the unusual Stone Age Avengers. Agamotto would go on to found the Masters of the Mystic Arts, and allow magic to spread globally in an effort to protect the Earth, but the Eye of Agamotto and the Book of Vishanti were by far his most powerful creations.
If The Book Of Vishanti Can’t Be Destroyed, Is The Darkhold Really Gone Too? Marvel Comics' explanation that the Book of Vishanti can't be destroyed came with a dire realization, that being that the Darkhold also can't be destroyed, as both balance each other. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ended with the Scarlet Witch apparently destroying every copy of the Darkhold throughout the multiverse, along with the inscriptions on the walls of Mount Wundagore. However, this might not be the last time audiences see either book, as the two texts are indestructible in Marvel Comics. This opens the door for some terrifying storylines for the MCU's future, but could also see the introduction of Agamotto, a fantastic new mentor for Doctor Strange.
