Star Wars Reveals 8 Connections From The Empire To The First Order

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 7.
The Mandalorianseason 3, episode 7 "The Spies" saw the return of the Imperial Remnant, revealing even more connections from the Empire to the First Order. Past episodes of The Mandalorian have certainly featured foreshadowing for the First Order, from the ineffective New Republic to the Imperial Remnant itself. However, The Mandalorian season 3, episode 7 features more definitive connections than anything that's come before, even confirming past hints that give more context to the rising First Order. The episode also manages to build off Star Wars media outside the sequel trilogy, creating a more cohesive timeline and setting up future stories.
Revealing more connections between the Empire and the First Order demonstrates Lucasfilm's attempt to expand the sequel era timeline, especially after the 3 new Star Wars movie announcements. An expanded timeline for the sequels will help Rey's New Jedi Order movie, and Moff Gideon mentioning Grand Admiral Thrawn will tie into Ahsoka and Dave Filoni's The Mandalorian film. Most importantly, more connections to the First Order will open up more possibilities for what sequel trilogy elements the Star Wars TV shows can continue to explore. With all that in mind, here are all eight of The Mandalorian season 3, episode 7's connections from the Empire to the First Order.
8 Imperial Agents Within The New Republic Officer Elia Kane had previously mind-flayed Dr. Pershing, revealing her as an Imperial double agent, and The Mandalorian season 3, episode 7 confirmed that she still answers to Moff Gideon directly. Her presence within the New Republic suggests that the Imperial Remnant may have more operatives like her, sabotaging the galactic government from within, and other Star Wars media supports this. Star Wars: Bloodline by Claudia Gray revealed that many New Republic senators were secretly First Order spies in the years leading up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The latest episode is called "The Spies," so this would be a fitting connection to the First Order.
7 The Imperial Shadow Council Is The Foundation Of The First Order In addition to the return of Moff Gideon, The Mandalorian season 3, episode 7 introduced other notable characters through the Imperial Shadow Council. The most notable figure is Captain Gilad Pellaeon, who in the Legends continuity was Thrawn's right-hand man during his campaign against the New Republic. This sets up Thrawn's return and the rise of the First Order, with each council member building from the ashes of the Empire to create something new. Pellaeon specifically mentions that their presence is nothing but a scattered fleet of warlords, rather than a coordinated effort, and the First Order used a similar strategy to take the New Republic by surprise.
