Star Wars Set Up Its Perfect Skywalker Saga Replacement 2 Years Ago – But Will It Happen?
Summary
- Star Wars: The High Republic offers a new era of storytelling with compelling characters, thrilling stories, and genuine stakes for the Jedi and the Republic.
- The High Republic showcases the Jedi at their height, exploring their role as protectors and aid providers rather than soldiers, and could be a refreshing change for on-screen portrayals of the Jedi.
- Adapting The High Republic books into movies and shows could provide cohesive storytelling and introduce more people to the captivating characters and stories of this era, potentially making it the next Skywalker saga.
Star Wars already set up the perfect replacement for the Skywalker saga two years ago, and the possibilities are endless. The Skywalker saga tells the tragic yet heartwarming tale of the Skywalker family. It encompasses an epic journey – it’s a story of family, love, hope, and resistance in the face of oppression. The saga introduced the world to some of the most iconic characters of all time, including Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and many more. The Skywalker saga made Star Wars what it is today, and the eras it explores are undeniably compelling.
But, at a certain point, the franchise will have to move on from the Skywalker saga and the Fall of the Jedi, the Reign of the Empire, and the Age of Rebellion, once and for all. What will it focus on then? All in all, those Star Wars eras only cover a mere few decades of the Star Wars timeline. There is so much galactic history left to explore, and while some novels and comics have scratched the surface, there is one new era, in particular, that has the potential to be just as sprawling, epic, and interconnected as the Skywalker saga.
Star Wars: The High Republic Revealed An Exciting New Part Of Galactic History
Star Wars: The High Republic began as a Lucasfilm publishing initiative with books, comics, and audio plays that chronicle the lives of the Jedi during the time of the High Republic. It is a time of great prosperity for the Jedi, but darkness lurks around every corner. Pirating marauders known as the Nihil are intent on destroying the Jedi and the Republic government, and far darker creatures lurk in the shadows as well. It's been two years since The High Republic’s launch, and Disney+ has become involved, too. The animated series Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures takes place in the High Republic, as does the upcoming live-action series The Acolyte.
Currently, The High Republic is divided into three phases. Phase I: Light of the Jedi takes place 200 years before the Skywalker saga and introduces dozens of new Jedi and threats just as terrifying as anything that had become before. Phase II: Quest of the Jedi steps back in time another 150 years and explores the consequences of fanaticism and dark side creatures called the Nameless, while Phase III: Trials of the Jedi will continue where Phase I left off. Before the very first High Republic novel was published, this was an era previously unexplored by Lucasfilm. The initiative has proven how much freedom there is in creating stories unconnected to the legacy narratives that came before, and the era has so much left to offer.
The first High Republic novel, Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule, was published in 2021.
The High Republic Was The Time When The Jedi Were At Their Height Close In Star Wars’ on-screen storytelling, the Jedi have never truly been at the height of their power. Yes, the Star Wars prequel trilogy and Star Wars: The Clone Wars proved that there were many strong Jedi alive and well when the Skywalker saga began, but by this time, they were already being set up to fail. Anakin’s arrival at the Jedi Order ushered in a new age, one where the Jedi became ruled over by the Republic, forced to fight in an unwinnable war, and blinded by their arrogance. The Jedi were never shown on screen as they were truly meant to be. If Lucasfilm were to start bringing The High Republic to the big screen or expand it further on the small screen, that could all change.
