How Leia Became The Chosen One (According To Lucas)

When Disney “somehow” brought Palpatine back to Star Wars in the sequel trilogy, many wondered if Rey would end up rewriting Anakin Skywalker as the true Chosen One. The concept of the prophecy of the Chosen One who would bring balance to the Force is one of George Lucas’ most controversial additions to the Star Wars prequels, introducing the idea of an unavoidable destiny. But despite Rey successfully ending the centuries of war between the Jedi and the Sith, Anakin is still held by most to be the Chosen One. Nevertheless, the idea of changing who fulfilled the prophecy is something that Lucas himself considered when conceptualizing his sequel trilogy.
There are a lot of Lucas’ sequel concepts that went unused in Disney’s trilogy. Some of his ideas have slowly seeped back into canon through the years, such as Darth Maul’s resurrection in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, along with the crime syndicate he sets up in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Many of Lucasfilm’s current creators, like Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, still hold Lucas in high regard and continue to reimagine his old ideas, rather than try to reinvent them. Yet Lucas was no stranger to retconning himself by patching plot holes through rereleases and special editions. His sequel trilogy would have massively altered the course of Star Wars.
