Robert Downey Jr."s MCU Return Makes One Classic Batman Meme A Reality In The Strangest Way
Robert Downey Jr."s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming
Avengers: Doomsday is perfectly encapsulated by a popular quote from Christopher Nolan"s The Dark Knight. While the cast of Doomsday has not been fully revealed, the Russo brothers, who will direct the picture, revealed that Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Victor Von Doom, the antagonist of the piece, at San Diego Comic-Con 2024.
This reveal was unexpected, and there has been much to parse through ever since to make sense of this decision.
Several actors have played Doctor Doom in multiple films, although none of the material has done the character justice. Doom is one of the most terrifying and effective Marvel villains in the comics, but the Fantastic Four movies have not done enough with the character to make him feel anything more than disposable. With canceled plans for a Doctor Doom movie at Fox, Disney"s plan to have Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. - an Academy Award winner - in the role is clearly enough to get audiences excited. It also fulfills a popular quote from a beloved Batman movie.
Downey Has Both Died A Hero In The MCU... AND Become A Villain The Actor's Journey Mirrors Harvey Dent's In The Dark Knight Close In The Dark Knight, Harvey Dent says one of the most iconic lines in comic book movie history:
"You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain." This Batman movie line"s meaning and impact have been discussed over the years, although no one expected it to be taken so literally as with Downey"s path in the MCU. Following more than a decade in the Iron Man role, Downey was able to die in the MCU as perhaps the greatest hero of all. Following this, it now appears he will still become a villain.
By casting Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, the character"s MCU journey to good or evil will be able to be contrasted.
Much of what Tony Stark did in the MCU, including his alignment with the Sokovia Accords and his creation of Ultron, teeters on the edge of good and evil. By thinking of himself as knowing better than others, Stark"s actions could easily have been seen as villainous if they had turned out slightly differently. Seeing this examined with Doctor Doom will make for an incredible contrast to the previous hero.
Will The MCU's Doctor Doom Be A Straightforward Iron Man Variant? Doctor Doom Being An Iron Man Variant Feels Inevitable Close Robert Downey Jr. has seemingly confirmed which Doom he will be playing in the MCU, and there has been a great deal of speculation about this.
While Downey is set to play Victor Von Doom, not another man named Tony Stark, this does not mean that this Von Doom is not a multiversal variant of Tony Stark with a different name and background, leaving it still unclear whether Doctor Doom will be an Iron Man variant. However, with the casting of Downey, this is almost certainly the case in some capacity.
Robert Downey Jr. has been cast for his ability, certainly, but there is no ignoring how fundamental he has been to the MCU.
The new villain looking identical to him cannot be simply a coincidence, and this will make for many emotional moments in the upcoming films. However, this will also entirely fulfill the meme from the Batman films. Downey will clearly have lived long enough in the MCU to see his own hero become a villain.

1 How Robert Downey Jr. is able to play Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains to be seen, but some of the rumors help to make sense of this choice.
The villain will likely come from the same universe as The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and his identical appearance to Tony Stark will have to be explored. With the Russos on board to direct, Marvel has earned the benefit of the doubt with
Avengers: Doomsday, especially since seeing this character’s villainous journey is an exciting prospect.
