Avengers: Doomsday marks Chris Evans" return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe"s biggest franchise, and I"m convinced that it could finally lead to a major Bucky Barnes problem being fixed. There are some strong friendships in the MCU, such as those between Peter Parker and Ned Leeds or Tony Stark and Rhodey; however, few friendships get close to that of Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers. Starting in 2011"s Captain America: The First Avenger, an underrated film I believe is one of the MCU"s best movies, Steve and Bucky have shown their love for one another.
Not even death could set them apart, as Bucky Barnes was saved by Hydra after being presumed dead, only to become the Winter Soldier. I loved how the MCU changed the dynamic of their relationship over the years, allowing it to become multi-faceted like no other such friendship in the franchise. Steve managed to get Bucky to remember who he was, went against the world to ensure his best friend was safe, even breaking up the Avengers in the process, and more. However, Marvel failed their friendship in one damning way, which Avengers: Doomsday"s story could now fix.
I Dislike A Major Aspect Of Captain America’s MCU Ending Avengers: Endgame Made A Controversial Decision Close Despite it being my favorite of the MCU"s Avengers movies, and I enjoy most of what it did with Captain America, Avengers: Endgame did make a mistake when it comes to Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes" friendship. I fully understood Steve"s desire to go back to the past and live a full life alongside Hayley Atwell"s Peggy Carter, especially after seeing her up close when going to the past as the Avengers searched for the Infinity Stones. However, there was a huge problem with that choice, as Steve should never have left Bucky behind.
Everything we saw from those characters in the MCU made it seem like they were destined to always be there for each other. Captain America was the leader of the Avengers and Bucky"s rock, and all of that was left behind as Steve chose to pursue a life with Peggy in the past. While Bucky was decidedly on a better path in Avengers: Endgame, he still needed Steve. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showed Bucky"s struggle to make amends for his Winter Soldier days, and Steve"s help would have gone a long way in that process.

While I fully expected the actor to come back for the Multiverse Saga"s finale, Avengers: Secret Wars, I thought Robert Downey Jr."s return now as Doctor Doom in the next Avengers film would be it in terms of the original Avengers coming back for that film. Evans" Avengers: Doomsday role and how much he will appear in the movie have yet to be revealed. However, another MCU casting has added an interesting element to Evans" reported return, and it points to Steve Rogers coming back.

Given Steve Rogers" deep ties to Peggy Carter in the MCU, if Atwell and Evans are both appearing in the next Avengers movie, then it would make sense if the duo were reprising one of the MCU"s most beloved couples. Deadline also revealed that the stars had talks with Marvel back in 2021 to star in a standalone MCU movie as Steve and Peggy, teasing Evans" Captain America return now.
Captain America Can Come Back To Fix His Bucky Mistake An MCU Future For Chris Evans Would Make It Even Better Close If Chris Evans is truly coming back as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday, then Marvel will likely pair him up with Sebastian Stan"s Bucky Barnes again. While Bucky has not yet been confirmed for the movie, it was announced that Thunderbolts* characters will appear in the film, which makes Bucky a shoo-in for a role. With Hayley Atwell joining Evans in Avengers: Doomsday, there is a great chance that Marvel could be bringing back the MCU"s original Captain America and Atwell"s Peggy Carter from the end of Avengers: Endgame, which would be the ideal way to fix Steve"s Bucky mistake.
Steve Rogers coming back would allow him to be part of Bucky Barnes" healing process. Thunderbolts* will establish Bucky as the leader of an MCU team, giving him another thing in common with Captain America. I want to see Avengers: Doomsday show how Bucky can learn how to be a better leader from Steve, with the duo bonding over their past experiences and Steve learning about how Bucky has been doing.
There is also a chance that Chris Evans will play a multiverse variant of Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday, which could also work in terms of exploring his friendship with Bucky and leaving things in a satisfying way by the end of the film.
If Evans sticks around for more after Avengers: Doomsday, perhaps with Peggy also staying in the present, it would be great to see Steve be part of Bucky"s life again. That said, even a one-off appearance from Chris Evans in Avengers: Doomsday could lead to a more satisfying ending than Avengers: Endgame"s for the two best friends.
