"One Of My Greatest Moments In Filmmaking": James Gunn Addresses Casting David Corenswet As Superman And Rachel Brosnahan As Lois Lane

The casting of David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Clark Kent and Lois Lane in Superman gets further explained by James Gunn ahead of the DC Universe film"s 2025 release. As the Superman movie cast have wrapped principal photography, the world is getting closer to finally seeing the highly-anticipated film in Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters." The DC Universe serving as a major reboot has also meant taking on the challenge of finding new stars for the roles of the Man of Steel and Lois.
ScreenRant’s Rob Keyes attended a Superman movie set visit back in June alongside a handful of outlets during production in Cleveland, Ohio, where members of the press spoke with Gunn about the process for the DC reboot. One of the big topics of discussion that was brought up was casting Corenswet and Brosnahan for the Superman and Lois roles, as Gunn went into depth about tapping the duo for his DC Universe:
James Gunn: Yeah. The truth is, I think I took cues from their casting process when I cast Chris [Pratt] in the Star-Lord role. So I"ve been taking tips from those casting processes all along. I"ve always believed that the casting is the most important and that as long as the actor is the best possible actor for that role, that"s more important than it is for a name. Especially in today"s market, which is you see movie stars are not the same as they used to be in terms of you can"t open up, like what it was 15 years ago, open up a Melissa McCarthy movie. Instantly, you"re going to make this much money. Open up an Adam Sandler movie, instantly you"re going to make this much money. It"s not like that anymore. So I just wanted to go for who was the best Superman.
A lot of people auditioned, and the weird thing is I was so crazily nervous about getting Superman ready, on very first day of the tapes coming in, I had seen [David] Corenswet in Pearl. So I said, “Get him on, get him on.” I said, get him on the tape. And then the very first day came in David"s tape and Rachel"s tape, and I saw both of those and I went, “Oh my God, we"re going to be okay.” Because both of these people are amazing. There were other really good actors for both of those roles, but at the end of the day, it was both of them as individuals.
Then we did something that I didn"t do with Guardians, which is I cast the two leads together and they all came in and we had this 15-minute-long scene that they have to act together and talk and discuss and just communicate. And I mixed and matched all the different couples and it was something magic when the two of them came up. I got to say, it"s one of my greatest moments in filmmaking.
What James Gunn's Comments About Casting Superman And Lois Mean Close Superman and Lois Lane are some of the most iconic characters in the entire DC canon, with several iconic actors having played Superman and Lois in live-action over the years - which means getting the casting right for a new shared universe is imperative. Whether it is established actors or unknowns getting tapped for Lois and Superman, their dynamic has to work on multiple levels, including the pair"s chemistry when Clark is acting as a humble civilian.
While casting has always been one of the biggest strengths in Gunn"s movies, including his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, it"s also clear from his new comments that he wanted to take on a few new approaches for his DC Universe. Given the big search for Superman and Lois in the 2025 film, the DC Universe is making sure to set the foundation for this couple, especially with the goal of having this franchise run for as many years as possible.
With Gunn"s Superman movie being teased as centering a lot on Lois and Clark, it makes sense to have extensive auditions and chemistry tests, as this is a pair-up that has to click for the new superhero continuity that DC Studios is now building. Given how many times Lois and Superman"s story has been depicted, it also makes sense that Gunn is wanting to add some new elements to this duo in the DC Universe.
Our Take On James Gunn's Comments About Casting Superman And Lois Hearing the relief that came over Gunn when seeing Brosnahan and Corenswet"s auditions speaks volumes, especially as these two actors had been fan-favorite castings long before the formation of DC Studios. As the first Superman trailer arrives this Thursday, Lois and Clark"s dynamic and presence will hopefully be one of the key elements that will be heavily explored ahead of their big-screen introduction in 2025. With only a few days left to go, fans will soon get a taste of Corenswet and Brosnahan"s chemistry in Gunn"s Superman story.
Superman opens in theaters on July 11, 2025.
