James Gunn Addresses Potential DCU Flash Movie As He Reiterates His No. 1 Rule For Greenlighting New Projects
The revamped DC Universe already has its new Superman on the way, but James Gunn has addressed when fans might expect to see a new
Flash movie. Serving as one of the final entries in the former DC Extended Universe, 2023’s The Flash had already completed filming when Gunn and producer Peter Safran were named co-CEOs of the freshly minted DC Studios in late 2022. Despite the buzz surrounding Michael Keaton’s long-anticipated return as Batman in the film, the finished product would also generate mixed reviews and ultimately underwhelm at the box office.
Over on Threads, Gunn recently responded to fan questions about the timing of the recently announced Clayface movie, and why he would not choose a more prominent character. Reiterating his previous stance that the
number one rule for all DC Studios projects would be a completed script, he explained that Mike Flanagan’s script for Clayface was ready to go. Moreover, he also suggested that
development on a new Flash movie is currently taking “a beat.” Check out his response below:

not completely swept aside all events depicted in the former DCEU, it is expected that none of the previous members of the Justice League will be reprising their roles. Instead, David Corenswet has already been tapped to replace Henry Cavill as Superman, and it is expected that the DCU’s Batman will be revealed ahead of the previously announced Brave and the Bold movie.
As for the Flash, however, Gunn’s decision to hold off on introducing a new version of the character
makes sense given the proximity to the 2023 movie starring Ezra Miller. By the time of Superman’s 2025 release, it will have been 12 years since the character’s last solo outing in Man of Steel, and despite the presence of Matt Reeves’ The Batman and its universe, it is expected that the eventual introduction of the DCU’s version of Batman will be more closely tied to other members of the extended Bat family. More time needs to pass for the Flash.
Our Take On When Audiences Will Meet The DCU’s Flash The Character's Presence Will Still Likely Be Felt
Fans are already beginning to see the major differences between Gunn’s approach to the new DCU and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Less interested in grand, overarching narratives and more intent on delivering quality movies that can stand independently, there is currently
no clear indication when audiences can expect to see a new Flash movie or films led by any of the other Justice League members.
The classic Flash villain, Gorilla Grodd, has already made an appearance in Creature Commandos, and it is likely that the Flash will also be referenced in any number of the DCU projects currently in active development.
However, just because Gunn has made it clear that they are currently putting a pause on a new
Flash movie, does not mean the character’s presence will be completely absent from the DCU altogether. The classic Flash villain, Gorilla Grodd, has already made an appearance in Creature Commandos, and it is likely that the Flash will also be referenced in any number of the DCU projects currently in active development. In the meantime, Gunn will probably have many more surprises planned for eager DC fans.
