I Seriously Cannot Believe Superman & Lois Introduced Krypto The Dog In The Last 5 Minutes Of The Show’s Entire Run
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Superman & Lois season 4, episode 10.
Superman & Lois managed to bring the iconic DC dog Krypto into the show in its very final scenes, and I"m still shocked at how they managed to pull it off. The last episode of Superman & Lois released December 2, 2024, marking an overall runtime for the live-action Superman show of over three years. In that time, the series has brought entirely new characters like Tal-Rho on-screen, placed Superman against some of his most powerful villains, and balanced everything out by ensuring the story kept a focus on the day-to-day lives of Clark and Lois" family.
However, this day-to-day life remained notably dog-free for the majority of the series" four-season-long run, with no sign of a superpowered or ordinary version of Krypto cropping up as the story unfolded. That said, Superman & Lois season 4, episode 10 flipped the script on this side of things, revealing the beloved pooch at the last possible moment. With another Krypto set to appear in the DCU Superman movie, this live-action appearance is all the more significant.
Superman & Lois Season 4's Story Seemed Like It Didn't Have Room For Krypto Close Given there were already a lot of loose ends to tie up with the Superman & Lois season 4 cast as-is, by the final season of the show it seemed as though there wasn"t time to introduce a notable figure like Krypto into the series. While season 4 did bring Milton Fine - seemingly the show"s more grounded version of Brainiac going by his human alias - into the series, even Fine"s role in the show was relatively succinct, serving more or less as a tech whiz who could be used to justify Lex Luthor gaining control of and then upgrading John Henry Irons" Steel suit.
After Superman & Lois season 4, episode 9, Krypto"s debut seemed even more clearly impossible. With only 40 minutes left to show Superman"s big final fights against Doomsday and Lex Luthor - and then give every major character their own ending that pays off 3 years of build-up - the concept of adding anything else to the mix seemed borderline unimaginable. However, this only makes it all the more notable that
the decision was indeed made to add Krypto into the show"s story in its very final minutes.
Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 10 Brought Krypto Into The DC Show In Its Final Scenes
The end of Superman & Lois season 4, episode 10 features Clark Kent"s narration explaining the events that took place in the final decades of his life. Though Clark and Lois got many further years together, Kent reveals that Lois would go on to pass from a recurrence of the cancer she fought throughout the show later in life.
While Clark was visited frequently by friends and family, he still struggled with the void Lois" passing left in his own life - something that would eventually lead him to adopt Krypto, who in this universe appears to be an entirely normal dog.
It"s a moment that somehow both entirely comes out of left-field and makes perfect sense - something that even Superman"s narration reflects, as he himself questions why he never got a dog before, in likely a semi tongue-in-cheek reference to how late Krypto is actually appearing in the show. Getting to see Superman"s canine companion be by his side in the last stretches of the hero"s life is a welcome thing even if we may not have been expecting it - although it"s definitely a storyline that is both very sweet and undeniably at least a little emotional.
Krypto's Superman & Lois Story Is Equal Parts Wonderful & Heartbreaking
Making Krypto"s origin story that he"s the pet Superman brought into his life to help deal with his grief from losing Lois ensures the story of a man and his dog has an undercurrent of sadness to it, especially since it"s clear Clark"s days are also numbered. Indeed, whatever order Clark and Krypto"s deaths happen, they add an extra layer of heartbreak to the series, as either Superman is outlived by his dog, or Clark had to experience another loved one"s death before his own - which may well be the case, since Krypto isn"t in the room when Clark dies.
With all that said, one of the most poignant ways Superman & Lois explores the life of the iconic DC hero is by underlining that everyone has to deal with death and loss, be they a regular human or a superpowered Kryptonian. Since the show begins with Clark"s life being changed by his mother"s death, there"s a certain full-circle story aspect that comes from the finale showing Jordan and Jonathan dealing with the deaths of their own parents, and the family supporting one another through both new life coming into the world via the twins" children, and through the loss of beloved family members.
Superman & Lois ran for 53 episodes.
Superman & Lois is the end of an era for DC, as the final show on The CW, and the final show in the wider Arrowverse. As such, it is fitting for it to close with a finale that"s equal parts heartwrenching and heartwarming - though the somber idea of Superman spending the last days of his life without Lois Lane until their reunion in the afterlife is certainly made easier knowing he"s got Krypto by his side throughout it.
