10 Most Twisted Moments In DC Movies

The history of the DC Universe has seen a number of movie moments that are particularly twisted in nature or execution. Even before the DCEU’s movie timeline, movie adaptations of DC properties were regular features of Hollywood’s cinematic landscape. With so many iconic characters under their banner, DC movies often tell quintessential superhero stories, with the typical highs and lows that have come to be expected of the genre’s good-versus-evil narratives.
However, there have been many occasions on which DC movies veer into much darker territory. Sometimes, movie adaptations of DC stories take particularly twisted detours, featuring moments that are dark, unexpected, or otherwise disturbing. This happens not just in the grittier movies of the DCEU, but on multiple occasions throughout the wide world of DC adaptations. With that in mind, here are the 10 most twisted moments in DC movie history.
10 Vera Webster Turns Into A Robot Superman III (1983) Though it may not be considered the absolute worst Superman movie ever made, 1983’s Superman III certainly isn’t one of the Man of Tomorrow’s finest cinematic outings. Even so, its story, featuring synthetic kryptonite and a sentient supercomputer, offered an opportunity for one of the most unexpectedly twisted scenes in DC’s movie history. After the film’s villain, Russell Webster, forces programmer Gus Gorman to build him a supercomputer, the machine instantly responds by transforming Webster’s sister, Vera, into a cyborg.
The scene shows the woman being unexpectedly sucked into the machine, and then the computer affixing various metal plates and components to her skin as she screams in horror. It’s a moment that employs a jarring level of body horror in an otherwise tame movie, and it comes as all the more of a surprise as a result. It’s undeniably a twisted moment, and one of the most unexpectedly dark in DC’s history of movies.
9 Vicky Ruins The Joker’s Make-Up Batman (1989) Many actors have played the Joker in live-action, but very few can boast that their version of the villain has aged as well as Jack Nicholson’s. Nicholson took on the role for Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989 opposite Michael Keaton’s Caped Crusader, and delivered a memorable performance that combined terror with chaotic comedy. The Joker is a character known for his twisted schemes, but one particular moment in the film stands out as especially unnerving.
After meeting Vicky Vale at the Gotham Museum, she throws a glass of water in his face. The Joker immediately pretends to be melting, screaming and crying and clutching his face. When Vale shows concern, he pops up, make-up running down his face, and simply says: “Boo.” It’s a moment that’s every bit as twisted as the Joker himself, and juvenile though the trick may be, it’s horrifying in its visual execution.
8 The Riddler Crashes The Mayor’s Funeral The Batman (2022) As part of the Riddler’s plan in The Batman involves killing several prominent Gotham citizens in creative ways, it’s hardly surprising that one of them stands out as incredibly twisted. Though there are multiple contenders for the most twisted moment in The Batman, the murder of DA Gil Colson seems just that extra bit darker than some of the Riddler’s other crimes. The scene sees Colson drive a car through the public funeral of the recently murdered mayor, only to emerge wearing a bomb collar with a message for Batman.
What follows is a scene that sees Colson tormented by the Riddler, and forced to publicly acknowledge his own corruption. After failing to comply with the Riddler’s final instruction, the collar detonates, killing Colson in explosive fashion. It’s an incredibly twisted scene on multiple levels, from the car driving through the funeral and threatening the lives of the public all the way to its lethal conclusion.
7 Superman Snaps Zod’s Neck Man of Steel (2013) Man of Steel did more than just start the DCEU as a franchise; it set the tone for the entire shared universe. Zack Snyder’s 2013 movie adapted Superman’s origin story with a far more grounded and grittier spin than previous incarnations of the hero, leading to a movie that captured a very different side of the eponymous Kryptonian. Though Superman is traditionally seen as the quintessential hero, Man of Steel saw him feature in one particularly twisted moment.
Faced with the impossible task of stopping Zod, Man of Steel saw Superman shockingly break his traditional moral code and kill the villain. While attempting to subdue Zod, Superman realizes he will never stop in his pursuit of conquering Earth, and so snaps his neck. It’s a scene that seems particularly twisted considering Superman’s typical characterization, and it cemented the DCEU as a very different type of DC universe.
6 Arthur Shoots Murray On Live TV Joker (2019) Todd Phillips’ 2019 movie Joker delved into the origins of the iconic Batman villain, exploring one possible facet of the character. Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck captured the imaginations of audiences as a hypnotic figure. As a man living with mental illness, Fleck’s comedic aspirations and frustrations with society and its mistreatment of him boil over, prompting the creation of a violent alter-ego. The movie’s climax sees the Joker persona come into full view, as Fleck appears on his once-favorite talk show.
After being taunted by host Murray Franklin, Arthur begins a joke. Immediately before delivering the punchline, Arthur produces a gun and shoots Murray on live TV in a shocking display of violence that completes the protagonist’s transformation into a full villain. It’s an especially twisted moment considering it comes in the middle of one of Arthur’s jokes, and the wider implications of the act make it one of the darkest moments in DC’s movie history.
5 Batman Fakes His Death The Dark Knight Rises (2012) Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is one of the most widely celebrated in the history of the superhero genre. The three-film arc sees Batman establish his identity as a hero, protect the city of Gotham, and eventually retire. Though it features several twisted moments along the way, one in particular stands out as an especially subtle but undeniably dark chapter in the Dark Knight mythos.
The Dark Knight Rises ends with Batman seemingly making the ultimate sacrifice protecting Gotham from a nuclear explosion. It’s then revealed that Bruce Wayne survived and retired into obscurity, but not before a scene depicting Alfred’s grief at the death of his young ward. Seeing Alfred so upset is a twisted moment considering that Wayne could have simply let his former butler in on the secret, but instead chose to needlessly manipulate his one-time guardian’s emotions.
4 The Joker Kidnaps Rachel & Harvey Dent The Dark Knight (2008) It’s no secret that Heath Ledger’s Joker is one of the greatest movie villains ever, but The Dark Knight’s antagonist is also responsible for some of the most twisted moments ever committed to film. The 2008 movie saw the Joker enact a particularly evil campaign of terror on Gotham, but one of his most disturbing actions is far more personal to its heroes. After being captured, the Joker reveals that he is holding both Rachel Dawes and Harvey Dent, and that they are both set to be burned alive at the same time.
Forcing Batman to choose between the woman he loves and an important Gotham City figure is cruel enough, but the aspect that makes it especially twisted in the Joker’s cruel trick. He switches the locations, leading Batman to Dent instead of Rachel, and they are both forced to hear the woman they love die. It’s a horrific moment, made all the more twisted by the Joker’s misplaced sense of morbid fun.
3 Diana & Steve Trevor Consummate Their Relationship Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) Wonder Woman 1984 might not be the most popular movie in the DCEU, but its story certainly contains a handful of memorable aspects. Unfortunately, they aren’t memorable in a particularly positive way: instead, they are best remembered for their problematic and somewhat twisted nature. The relationship between Diana and Steve Trevor is once again central to the Wonder Woman sequel, despite Trevor’s death in the first film. The way this is achieved makes for markedly twisted viewing, at least in a conceptual sense.
Diana begins losing her powers after wishing for Steve Trevor’s return. Her wish is achieved, although only by having Trevor reappear in the body of another man, who seemingly has not agreed to having his physical self co-opted by a dead pilot. Seeing their relationship redevelop knowing the moral implications on both sides – Diana allowing death and destruction by giving up her powers and Steve using a man’s body without permission – makes for several especially twisted moments.
2 The Penguin Bites Off A Man’s Nose Batman Returns (1992) Tim Burton’s Batman Returns is the more twisted of his two Batman movies, with his take on the Penguin being of particular note. Danny DeVito’s iteration of the villain employed a more outlandish take on the character, making a more animalistic and uncanny version of the DC crime boss. This even sees the movie’s characters mocking his appearance and habits, which comes to a head in one particularly disturbing and comedic moment.
After being mocked for his appearance, the Penguin laughs, and replies by saying: “it could be worse – my nose could be gushing blood.” As the man begins to laugh, Penguin leans in and bites the man’s nose, establishing a moment that’s as dark and violent as it is unexpectedly funny. The gruesome and shocking nature of the moment makes it seem especially twisted, as well as being a defining moment for the character within the movie.
1 Granny’s Peach Tea Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) Batman v Superman has long been one of the most divisive DC movies, but one scene in which it uses nuance in the most twisted manner earns it points for subtlety. After meeting with Senator Finch, Lex Luthor is told that he can “take a bucket of [urine] and call it Granny’s Peach Tea” but that she “won’t drink it”, meaning that she won’t be fooled by him. Lex then manipulates events surrounding Superman’s hearing at the Capitol, including Finch’s own role in proceedings.
The scene sees Finch glance down to notice a beverage of a yellowish hue, then sees that it’s labeled “Granny’s Peach Tea”. Immediately after realizing it’s Luthor’s doing, the Capitol explodes, killing her. Lex taunting an elected politician by implying that she might unknowingly drink his urine before murdering her is undeniably one of the most twisted moments in the history of the DC Universe.
