One Thunderbolts* Character Could Rewrite The Entire History Of The MCU

Thunderbolts* may be about to introduce a character that can rewrite the entire history of the MCU if it adapts the comics closely. Thunderbolts* stars a team of struggling antiheroes and ex-villains teaming up under the purview of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine whose motives in assembling the team are to be revealed. This is just one of many mysteries surrounding the movie - with one of the most glaring being the nature of the asterisk in the title - but the recent Thunderbolts* trailer has at least brought a few things to light.
Among the biggest reveals was the first look at Bob - a character that appears to be the MCU"s version of Robert Reynolds, a character whose reserved persona belies the nature of his alter-ego, Sentry. Sentry is one of Marvel"s most powerful heroes with a power set that mirrors DC"s Superman. Unfortunately for the denizens of the MCU, however, Sentry harbors a dark side - dubbed the Void - that has wreaked abject havoc in Marvel Comics and caused the death of millions. Suffice it to say, his arrival in the MCU carries huge implications in multiple ways.
The MCU Could Copy Marvel Comics' Sentry Debut All Memories Of Sentry Might Have Been Erased Close Sentry is a relatively new hero to Marvel Comics, debuting in 2000"s Sentry #1. Nevertheless, his debut revealed that Sentry had been a part of the Marvel Universe for many years but had used his power to remove himself from the collective memories of everyone in existence - including himself. This was to stave off the danger of the Void, who was subdued along with the Sentry by having Reynolds forget them entirely. Upon remembering his tumultuous past, Reynolds would suppress his memory once more with the help of Doctor Strange and Reed Richards.

1 This raises a particularly pertinent question of whether the same will happen in the MCU. If Thunderbolts* reveals that Sentry had removed all memory of himself from the collective minds of the MCU"s inhabitants, it may also be poised to retcon Sentry"s involvement into myriad historical events in the MCU"s timeline. This means that plenty of events that audiences have seen in the MCU, such as the Battle of New York and the Battle of Wakanda, may be about to include Sentry retroactively.
What Impact Could The Sentry Have Had On The MCU? Marvel Studios Could Use Sentry To Fill Some Plot Holes Close It"s safe to say that retconning Sentry into the MCU in this way would be a monumental development. The extent of Sentry"s powers in Marvel Comics is hard to overstate, and Thunderbolts* - or subsequent movies featuring Sentry - will be faced with a vast challenge in believably asserting that he was present in the MCU all along. While it may therefore seem more prudent and certainly easier for the MCU to alter Sentry"s origins and have him truly debut in Thunderbolts*, this could provide the MCU with a golden opportunity to fill certain MCU plot holes.
Adjusting the more confusing moments in the MCU"s history to make them a part of a tampered-with memory might be an ace in the hole.
Adjusting the more confusing moments in the MCU"s history to make them a part of a tampered-with memory might be an ace in the hole. Hulk"s diminished power levels, for instance, may be explained by Sentry also weighing in on fights against him, paving the way for a truly fearsome version of the Hulk in a World War Hulk adaptation. More mundane plot holes like Thor"s initial obliviousness to Midgard could also be explained by having him forget about it due to him working alongside Sentry when he first arrived to become a god in ancient Norse religion.
It"s hard to imagine that Sentry"s involvement in some of the MCU"s biggest battles wouldn"t have just resulted in an all-out victory - such is the extent of his powers. Still, given the Avengers have (mostly) won all of their fights, an interesting opportunity has opened up nonetheless. What Marvel chooses to do with the character in Thunderbolts* remains to be seen, but it"s safe to say that the MCU"s landscape is about to change regardless.
