I Can’t Believe The DCU Found A Way To Make Its Saddest New Backstory Somehow Even More Tragic

DC Universe co-head James Gunn has proven himself especially capable in providing humanity to inhuman creatures, and new heartbreaking details from Creature Commandos have shown him doing this once again. This exploration of a tragic backstory, similar to the ending for characters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, has successfully pulled on the heartstrings of many viewers. As the story of Creature Commandos proceeds, these shockingly sad details have been used effectively to set up future stories.
Because of Gunn’s past involving characters like Rocket Raccoon and King Shark, many expect to see all kinds of animal characters in the DCU. This has already begun, with Krypto the Superdog appearing in the Superman trailer. However, it is the inhuman characters in Creature Commandos that have been given the most focus so far. New details from the latest episode of the animated series clearly show that the series will not shy away from telling extremely tragic and emotional stories.
Creature Commandos Episode 6 Makes Weasel's Backstory Even Sadder Weasel Has Quickly Become One Of The Most Compelling DCU Characters Close Events in episode 6 of Creature Commandos see Weasel story grow even more distressing, as the weight of things he was involved with continue to weigh upon him. While Weasel was originally revealed to have killed several children, the heartbreaking episode 4 of Creature Commandos gave context and detail to that story. Weasel"s actions resulted in the death of many children, but this was not his intent or his fault, and the failure to save one girl in particular continues to weigh on him.
Episode 6 of the show saw Weasel finding a pack of wolves that gave him the acceptance that he had always been looking for. However, Weasel is still tortured by the memory of the girl he failed to save. As a result, he winds up leaving this wolfpack to go and assist Princess Illana Rostovic, as she reminds him of her. In this, Weasel is attempting to redeem himself for the terrible actions that he blames himself for, even if he did not kill those children.
Why Making Weasel's Backstory So Sad Could Be Perfect For The DCU's Future "Gods And Monsters" Is Set To Tell Complex Stories In The DC Universe Close Weasel is a disconnected character with a dark past that the characters around him find to be strange. This is in line with many stories and characters that James Gunn has told in the past, with even figures like Rocket Raccoon and Groot potentially having been seen this way in their pasts. Examining Weasel, a seemingly objectionable and violent figure, and humanizing him, is the perfect choice here, and seeing such a tragic story play out is an excellent setup for the future of the DCU.
The new universe will be full of all kinds of characters and stories, and many of these figures will also have tragic pasts and stories of rejection behind them. Films like Swamp Thing and stories about the recently cast Lobo will center on monsters, and even the chapter of the story itself, "Gods and Monsters", speaks to the importance of these kinds of characters. It seems likely that more disconnected and disenfranchised characters with incredible powers will feature in the future of the universe. Weasel is an excellent template for them to follow.
