Charlie Cox Thought Vincent D’Onofrio Was Delusional Over Daredevil & Kingpin Show Returns

Star of the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again, Charlie Cox was not as optimistic about a Marvel Cinematic Universe return as was Kingpin actor Vincent D'Onofrio. Cox and D'Onofrio previously appeared together across all three seasons of Netflix's Daredevil. The series was canceled by the streamer in 2018, with the duo returning as their characters in different MCU projects in 2021.
Cox returned as Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home, while D'Onofrio came back as Wilson Fisk in Hawkeye.
Speaking at Wales Comic Con (via GamesRadar), Cox revealed that he thought D'Onofrio was delusional over their chances of playing Daredevil and Kingpin again.
While Cox and D'Onofrio will now lead Daredevil: Born Again's cast, Cox had already accepted that he was done with the character. According to the Matt Murdock actor, he "thought it was over," as he did not know about the two-year embargo on the characters before Marvel could use them again. D'Onofrio, on the other hand, was always confident in their returns, which led Cox to think at the time, "'Mate, the guy’s delusional! He’s got to let it go.'" Check out the full quote below:

"I really thought that ship had sailed, you know? I thought it was over. It had been a couple of years since [Netflix's Daredevil had been canceled]. What I didn’t know was there was an embargo on that. So, there was an amount of time – I think it was probably two years – after the show was canceled before Disney and Marvel could approach us. So, during that time, I didn’t know that. I just thought it was over. And Vincent [D'Onofrio], who plays Wilson Fisk, him and I would chat occasionally on the phone. And he would kind of say, 'I’m sure they’re gonna bring us back.' I’d be on the phone being, like, 'Mate, the guy’s delusional! He’s got to let it go.'"

Why Daredevil & Kingpin Returning Is Great For The MCU

Daredevil: Born Again will finally give Cox and D'Onofrio major roles to play in the MCU since they returned. The series can make the most of the characters to open up the MCU's street-level corner in key ways. Quite often, MCU movies and series feel like they are dealing with world-ending stakes, which gets repetitive. Netflix's Daredevil was much more focused on the personal stakes for its characters, with more contained stories that could help the MCU feel fresh again.
With Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige having confirmed Daredevil's importance to the MCU's street-level side going forward, Daredevil: Born Again could set up a number of characters and stories. Jon Bernthal is confirmed to return as the Punisher in the series, and characters from Netflix's The Defenders Saga, such as Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, could also appear in the series to set up future adventures. Through Daredevil and Kingpin, Marvel can use fan-favorite characters to expand the MCU in an underexplored direction.
Marvel Studios has recently received criticism over Kang the Conqueror being defeated somewhat easily in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Even if the character comes back, fan reception for Kang has taken a hit, and that's where Kingpin and Daredevil being in the MCU can help Marvel. Kingpin is the perfect overarching villain for street-level Marvel heroes like Spider-Man, Hawkeye, and more. By having Kingpin become a major villain and Daredevil be part of the next Avengers team, Marvel would insert new life into the MCU through beloved characters. If Daredevil: Born Again is successful, that path could very well be explored.
