Tom Hiddleston Reflects On What Thor Would Think Of Loki After The Season 2 Finale

Summary
  • Thor and Loki's relationship has evolved throughout the franchise, with Loki's recent transformation into a hero being a significant development.
  • Tom Hiddleston believes that Thor and Loki would be both surprised and distant from each other, as they have gone through a lot and had to face their past mistakes.
  • The possibility of a reunion between Loki and Thor in the MCU is uncertain and could be complicated due to the significant amount of time that has passed since they last saw each other, as well as their individual character arcs.
Having been at odds for most of the franchise, Tom Hiddleston weighs in on where Thor and Loki's relationship lies after the Loki season 2 finale. After becoming a villain by the end of the first Thor movie, Hiddleston's God of Mischief has embarked on a unique character arc throughout the years, serving as the main antagonist for the first Avengers movie while bouncing back and forth between ambiguity in subsequent appearances. The season 2 finale notably saw him fully arc towards being a hero as he elected to sacrifice himself by being the connective force for the branching timelines, leaving behind his life to ensure the multiverse remains stable.
Following the episode's premiere, Screen Rant interviewed Tom Hiddleston to break down the Loki season 2 finale. When asked about his character's evolution and what Thor would think of his brother's full transition to a hero, the star expressed uncertainty as to whether Chris Hemsworth's God of Thunder would be able to forgive his adopted brother's past sins, but that it would result in an "interesting conversation" between the two characters at the very least. See what Hiddleston explained below:
It's a really good question. I think they would be very surprised by each other. In some ways, Thor and Loki have never been further apart, but they're also closer together. They've been through so much. They've been confronted by so much. They've had to endure so much and suffer so much. But it's curious, isn't it? It's curious if people change, if people move on, if they're brave enough to make peace with the past and acknowledge their mistakes and missteps, sometimes those closest to you find it hardest to accept that you're different, that they cling to older versions of you somehow. It would definitely be an interesting conversation.
Will Loki & Thor Ever Reunite In The MCU? Close Ever since the character's pseudo resurrection with season 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe show, audiences have been pondering the possibility of a reunion between Loki and Thor. In addition to the above quotes, Hiddleston recently shared his thoughts on how the two coming back together could fare in the franchise, acknowledging that it could be "really confusing" given how much time has passed since they last saw each other. In Loki's case, it would be more complicated as the version still alive technically underwent a quicker redemption arc, having come directly from the end of 2012's Avengers after escaping thanks to Endgame's time heist shenanigans.
While the new Loki had to come to terms with the growth he displayed in both Thor: The Dark World and Ragnarok, Hemsworth's God of Thunder has dealt with more drawn-out character development. In addition to still believing his brother to be dead, Thor had to confront his failures to save the universe and his mother in Endgame while also being confronted with his failed relationship with Natalie Portman's Jane in Love and Thunder. Similarly, the end of the latter movie saw him become an adoptive father to the revived Love, who now joins him as a hero wielding Mjolnir while he wields Stormbreaker, setting up a new focus for him heading into the future.
Though neither character's future has been confirmed as of the time of writing, recent reports have swirled of a potential Thor 5 being in the works at Marvel without Taika Waititi directing. Additionally, theories have swirled of Hiddleston's importance to the impending multiverse war in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars following the Loki season 2 finale. With the two having largely been at odds for the majority of their time together in the franchise, it would be a refreshing twist to see the Norse-inspired gods come together to put down an MCU big bad with the help of their fellow heroes.
