Deadpool & Wolverine’s Crying Thor Scene Was Almost So Much Bigger Than You Could Possibly Believe
One unused idea for
Deadpool & Wolverine almost made the MCU movie"s crying Thor scene a much bigger part of the film than might have otherwise seemed possible. While Deadpool & Wolverine having now joined the club of MCU movies that have made over $1 billion at the box office makes its success seem almost inevitable now, behind the scenes explanations of how the story came to be show things weren"t always as straightforward as they may have appeared on the outside to some. This is doubly true when it comes to the matter of Deadpool 3"s story.
Bringing Hugh Jackman back in a way that manages to further cement his legacy and justify his return after Logan is a major factor in the movie"s success - especially since the Deadpool & Wolverine ending teases the possibility of his new iteration of Wolverine perhaps appearing again sometime soon. That said, the creatives involved in Deadpool & Wolverine have been very open about how many other ideas it took to get to the eventual decision to have Logan and Wade Wilson co-star enter the MCU timeline. As it turns out, one of those ideas almost put Thor front and center in a big way instead.
Deadpool 3 Was Almost Far Closer To Thor: The Dark World Than It Is Now Thor 2 Almost Played A Far Bigger Role In The Deadpool Movie Story
Over the years, the MCU has released a range of Assembled documentaries showing the behind the scenes work that goes into making its movies and shows, letting curious viewers get a closer look at things. Luckily, Deadpool"s most recent venture into the MCU meant he also got the documentary treatment, giving audiences a look into the finer details regarding every aspect of the movie, which otherwise might have been left unknown to all but those working on the project.
The Assembled: The Making Of Deadpool & Wolverine documentary sheds a lot of light on the creation and production process that eventually brought the MCU movie to life, including the many trials and challenges the team faced along the way. Though much of its focus is naturally on how the idea of the film"s actual story came to be - and how some of its best scenes were crafted - the release also details what ideas came before Deadpool & Wolverine for the third Deadpool movie.
Assembled: The Making Of Deadpool & Wolverine released on Disney+ on November 12, 2024.
During this part of Assembled: The Making Of Deadpool & Wolverine, Executive Producer Wendy Jacobson states that "I was going through my notes the other day looking at stuff. We had some crazy ideas. At one point
we talked about a frame-for-frame remake of Thor 2 up until the midpoint with Deadpool in it, and then it would go to another place." While this is by no means the only more eccentric idea that it"s revealed was considered for Deadpool 3, it certainly does add a notable different context for the final release"s Thor: The Dark World reference.
Deadpool 3's Thor Idea Totally Changes How Deadpool & Wolverine's Crying Thor Scene Looks Deadpool & Wolverine Almost Focusing On Thor 2 Changes The Hero's Cameo
The knowledge that the creation process that led to Deadpool & Wolverine eventually being made included at least one period of time discussing the prospect of recreating Thor 2 frame-for-frame makes the final film"s "crying Thor" scene different on a few levels. The scene - which takes an actual sequence from Thor: The Dark World wherein the God of Thunder is cradling a seemingly dying Loki, and replaces Loki with Ryan Reynolds" Deadpool instead - is shown early on in the story and repeatedly referenced by a confused Wade, who desperately wants to know what was happening.
Seen without context, Deadpool"s concerns about when he meets Thor and why Thor was crying while holding his potentially dying body are simply another of the film"s reoccurring jokes, akin to Deadpool"s hatred of Nicepool, or both Wade and Logan using the term "an educated wish" in the instalment"s runtime. However,
after Assembled: The Making Of Deadpool & Wolverine, the moment also seems a reference to a full movie idea that was at least in consideration for Deadpool 3, even if it"s not the idea that ended up becoming the final focus of the multiverse-traveling narrative.
Similarly, this seems to be a way to carry on the wish to connect Deadpool and Thor"s stories, providing the release that brought the Merc With A Mouth into the MCU a more tangible tie to the main universe. With much of Deadpool & Wolverine working on the peripheries of the main on-screen Marvel universe - via concepts like The Void and the Time Variance Authority, and having Wade meet Happy Hogan rather than any of the franchise"s other focal superheroes - the moment helps to tease the prospect of Wade getting to team up with figures like Chris Hemsworth"s hero.
Why It's A Good Thing Deadpool 3 Became Deadpool & Wolverine Instead Deadpool & Wolverine Appears To Have Opened More Doors For Its Heroes Than Any Other Movie Could Have Close Though the idea of Deadpool"s MCU debut going all-in on being surreal does have its own kind of appeal, ultimately this potential story avenue appears to pale in comparison to the final result of Deadpool & Wolverine, which balances the legacies and impacts of both its titular lead heroes, while also serving as a testament to the significance of the Fox X-Men movie era. Comparatively,
it"s hard to say a version of Deadpool 3 that was centered around riffing on Thor: The Dark World would"ve had the same result, particularly since it has less nostalgia for Marvel"s audience.
As it stands, though, a little of this prior idea still lives on in the movie via the crying Thor scene, and the fact that this joke appears to both entertain and intrigue audiences suggests it could be further expanded upon in the future - especially if an installment like Avengers: Secret Wars does end up containing Deadpool. With
Deadpool & Wolverine proving such a success with audiences, it seems like there should be plenty of time for the antihero to interact with Thor down the line, even if his most extensive reference to the character didn"t come to fruition.
