Deadpool’s Perfect MCU Future Copies Iron Man After Ryan Reynolds’ New Comments

Ryan Reynolds" comments concerning Deadpool"s MCU future after Deadpool & Wolverine suggest the Merc with a Mouth could copy exactly what Tony Stark"s Iron Man did back in Phase 3. After portraying Wade Wilson"s Deadpool in two self-titled movies in 20th Century Fox"s X-Men franchise, Reynolds officially joined the MCU in 2024"s Deadpool & Wolverine. Despite Deadpool & Wolverine"s massive success, however, the future for Reynolds" hilarious MCU antihero is uncertain, but it could follow the same trajectory as one original Avenger.
Many expected that Deadpool would be crossing over into the MCU"s main continuity permanently in Deadpool & Wolverine, and there was some surprise when this didn"t happen. Instead, the universe of Fox"s X-Men franchise, now dubbed Earth-10005, survived the death of its Anchor Being and Cassandra Nova"s attack, leaving the door open for Deadpool to return in the MCU"s future. Ryan Reynolds hasn"t yet been confirmed to be reprising the role, however, and has suggested that Deadpool may work best copying Tony Stark"s Phase 3 trend, anyway.
Ryan Reynolds Wants Deadpool To Be A Supporting Character After Deadpool & Wolverine Ryan Reynolds Revealed More About Deadpool In His Actors On Actors Interview With Andrew Garfield In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds joined former Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield in an interview for Variety"s Actors on Actors series. At the 36:05 mark in their interview, Garfield questions what the future holds for Deadpool, and Reynolds suggests the character works best one of two ways: "One is scarcity and surprise... [and] as a supporting character." Reynolds notes that Deadpool can"t be a main character unless everything in his life is put on the line, and there"s only so many times this can be done effectively.
Ryan Reynolds stating that "if [Deadpool] comes back, it"s gonna be in someone else"s movie" hints at what audiences might be able to expect from Deadpool"s future in the MCU. While the fact that Deadpool & Wolverine crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office could make the development of a sequel inevitable, this shouldn"t happen unless Deadpool"s story and character demands it, and this doesn"t seem to be the case. Thankfully, Marvel Studios has already proven this can work, as this is exactly what Tony Stark"s Iron Man did in Phase 3.
Tony Stark Became A Supporting Character After 2013’s Iron Man 3 Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark Made 5 Appearances In The MCU After Iron Man 3 Close Robert Downey Jr."s Tony Stark was the face of the MCU from the franchise"s very first movie, 2008"s Iron Man, until his emotional and intense sacrifice in 2019"s Avengers: Endgame. Tony Stark was the first major MCU superhero to get a solo trilogy of movies, releasing in 2008, 2010 and 2013, respectively, but, following the release of Iron Man 3, Downey Jr. did not lead any further solo projects as Iron Man. He continued to be perhaps the MCU"s most central and notable character, but only made five more appearances in crossovers and other heroes" projects.

Four of Robert Downey Jr."s appearances as Tony Stark after Iron Man 3 saw him return alongside the other members of the Avengers in Age of Ultron, Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame. Spider-Man: Homecoming featured him as a true supporting character to Tom Holland"s Peter Parker. It was impressive that Tony Stark could still hold such power in the MCU despite not embarking in any more solo adventures, and could explore huge storylines including break-ups, marriages, births and deaths. Deadpool could get this same treatment after Deadpool & Wolverine.
Deadpool’s Supporting Character Future Could Be His Best Chance For A Long MCU Journey Deadpool's Solo Movie Story Could Benefit From Ending On A High Tony Stark"s Iron Man already proved that a character could still be significant in the MCU despite not having any solo movies, so if Ryan Reynolds decides that Deadpool works best as a supporting character in the future, this certainly won"t harm the character. This also wouldn"t mean that Deadpool would just never be seen, and, in fact, could imply the opposite. Stark made five appearances following Iron Man 3, which comprised half his entire career in the MCU and arguably saw him explore grander stories, so this could actually be a huge advantage to Deadpool.

Posts 2 It takes no time at all for Ryan Reynolds to become Deadpool, and he has already been seen donning the suit for advertisements, commercials and comedic videos. After Deadpool & Wolverine, there are huge opportunities for Deadpool to make brief and hilarious cameo appearances in many upcoming MCU projects, meaning the majority of the Merc with a Mouth"s live-action career could easily be as a supporting character in other heroes" stories. It would, of course, be brilliant to see Deadpool back in a solo movie someday, but he could easily become the MCU"s most welcome and consistent supporting character, too.
