Five years after
Avengers: Infinity War and
Avengers: Endgame concluded the Infinity Saga, Marvel Studios is still no closer to solving some of the most frustrating mysteries in the MCU. Released in 2018 and 2019, respectively, Infinity War and Endgame marked the culmination of a decade of storytelling in the MCU, bringing together every superhero introduced since 2008's Iron Man to battle the Mad Titan Thanos. Following their premieres, Infinity War and Endgame became two of the highest-grossing movies of all time, and by far the most successful projects in the MCU, but they still left many burning questions unanswered.
Directed by the Russo brothers, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame changed the landscape of the MCU forever. The two-part finale of the Infinity Saga laid the foundations for the MCU's Multiverse Saga, marked the Avengers' first major loss, and saw beloved superheroes die and retire, making space for several new legacy heroes.
Despite being recognized as two of the MCU's most successful, profitable and popular installments, however, there are still many unanswered mysteries from Infinity War and Endgame that Marvel Studios hasn't taken steps to answer. Five years on, some of these major MCU mysteries still need to be resolved.

During the Avengers' Time Heist in Endgame, Bruce Banner's Smart Hulk traveled to New York City in 2012 to acquire the Time Stone from the Ancient One. The Sorcerer Supreme was hesitant to give up the Time Stone, however, providing Banner with a warning that
removing an Infinity Stone, the "chief weapon against the forces of darkness," from the timeline would allow the world to be "overrun." It's unclear exactly what the Ancient One was referring to, and Banner seems to have forgotten this warning. The MCU's current timeline has no Infinity Stones, yet the world hasn't yet been overrun.
9 What Was Kraglin Doing During Infinity War? Kraglin Was Doing Something Important In Avengers: Infinity War
Following Infinity War's release in 2018, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was questioned about Kraglin's whereabouts. Kraglin joined the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of 2017's Vol. 2, but was absent for Infinity War, with Gunn claiming that he was "doing something important" (via Reddit). Kraglin's actions during Infinity War and Endgame have yet to be revealed, and weren't mentioned at all during 2023's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. With the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy uncertain after James Gunn's exit from Marvel Studios, it's unclear if this mystery will ever be solved.
Kraglin is an official member of the new Guardians of the Galaxy team, along with Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Adam Warlock, Blurp, Cosmo and Phyla.
8 How Did Old Steve Rogers Return In Endgame, & Where Is He Now? Steve Rogers Returned In Avengers: Endgame To Make Sam Wilson Captain America Close At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers embarked on his solo mission to return the Infinity Stones and Mjolnir to their respective timelines. Instead of immediately returning, however,
Rogers took the opportunity to retire in the past with Peggy Carter, finally getting his happy ending. However, he did reappear as an old man to pass the Captain America mantle onto Sam Wilson, but the details of exactly how he returned haven't been explained. It's also unclear whether Steve Rogers is still alive in the MCU's current continuity, so it's possible the older Steve Rogers may return to the MCU.

They journey to Camp Lehigh in 1970, where SHIELD has been established, and while Stark tracks down the Tesseract, Rogers tries to find more Pym Particles, allowing them to return home.
He catches a glimpse of Peggy Carter, however, who can be heard questioning what happened to a man named Braddock. In Marvel Comics, Brian Braddock becomes the superhero Captain Britain, but despite having a major role in multiverse storylines, Braddock still hasn't made an appearance in the MCU.
6 What Happened When Thanos Decimated Xandar? Thanos' Attack On Xandar Happened Prior To Avengers: Infinity War
When Thor meets the Guardians of the Galaxy in Infinity War, he reveals that
Thanos "decimated Xandar last week" in order to claim the Power Stone, which had been safely stored with the Nova Corps since 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. The Power Stone is the only one of the Infinity Stones that audiences haven't seen Thanos claim on-screen, but there have been calls for his attack on Xandar to be shown in the MCU. While the details of this have remained hidden, there is speculation that Marvel Studios' Nova series could finally explore Thanos' quest for the Power Stone.

Runtime 149 minutes 5 What Happened To The Red Skull Once The Soul Stone Was Claimed? The Red Skull Guarded The Soul Stone On Vormir Close 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger ended with the Red Skull being thrust into space after holding the Tesseract, and Infinity War revealed that he had been sent to Vormir to guard the Soul Stone. This was a seemingly inescapable curse, but Marvel Studios hasn't revealed what happened to the Red Skull after the Soul Stone was claimed - first by Thanos in Infinity War, and then by Clint Barton in Endgame.
It's possible the Soul Stone being taken freed the Red Skull, allowing him to return in the MCU's future, but there has been no sign of him since.
4 Is The Collector Actually Dead? The Collector's Fate Is Unclear After Avengers: Infinity War
The Collector made his debut in Thor: The Dark World's post-credits scene, introduced as a collector of all manner of flora and fauna who was given the Reality Stone to store. This made him a target for Thanos in Infinity War, who traveled to Knowhere to claim the Reality Stone. While Thanos obtained the Reality Stone, the fate of the Collector hasn't been revealed, though
it was speculated that the Guardians of the Galaxy bought Knowhere from him prior to 2022's The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Of course, it's also possible he didn't survive the Mad Titan's attack.
Benicio Del Toro returned to voice the Collector in Marvel Studios' What If...? season 1, but he hasn't appeared in live-action since Avengers: Infinity War.
3 Where Is Harley Keener Now? Ty Simpkins' Harley Keener Returned In Avengers: Endgame After Iron Man 3
Harley Keener made his first appearance in 2013's Iron Man 3 as the child that Tony Stark befriends after finding himself stuck in Tennessee. Keener helps Stark get back into action, and evidently had an impact on the Avenger's life as he reappeared in Endgame at Stark's emotional funeral. This was a surprising cameo, as Keener has become a young man since Iron Man 3.
Theories arose that his return in Endgame hinted at a bigger role for him in the MCU's future, but he hasn't yet been featured in any further projects, so his true future is still unclear.

Avengers: Endgame's Time Heist Created Several Alternate Timelines Close Branching timelines and alternate realities weren't common vernacular prior to 2021's Loki series, which saw the Time Variance Authority pruning these branched timelines to erase any Kang the Conqueror variants. The existence of the TVA raised questions about whether they pruned the timelines created during the Time Heist in Endgame or not. In Loki,
Ravonna Renslayer revealed the Avengers were supposed to time travel, implying the TVA didn't prune these realities. However, with some big changes made, such as Thanos' absence, Steve Rogers knowing Bucky is alive and the Tesseract being stolen, the TVA surely can't have ignored them completely.
1 What Happened When Captain America Returned The Infinity Stones? Steve Rogers Returned The Infinity Stones At The End Of Avengers: Endgame
One of the biggest mysteries from
Avengers: Infinity War and
Avengers: Endgame is what happened on Steve Rogers' mission to return the Infinity Stones. After defeating Thanos, Rogers journeyed through time to return the Infinity Stones and Mjolnir to their timelines. However, the Space Stone was no longer in the Tesseract, the Power Stone wasn't in the Orb, the Reality Stone wasn't liquid, the Mind Stone wasn't in Loki's scepter, and returning the Soul Stone to the Red Skull would have been an interesting interaction. While many want to see this journey in the MCU, it remains a complete mystery.
