Mara Jade May Not Be Canon, But Her Legacy Lives On In Superb Star Wars Cosplay

A superb Star Wars cosplay honors the legacy of Mara Jade from the old Expanded Universe. First introduced in Star Wars: Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn, Mara Jade was formerly the Emperor's Hand but became a smuggler after his apparent death in Return of the Jedi. She later allied with Luke Skywalker against a common enemy, became a student at his Jedi Academy, and eventually married him and had a child named Ben Skywalker. Mara Jade's story was made non-canon when the EU was rebranded as "Legends," and while many aspects of the Thrawn trilogy have appeared in the TV shows, Mara Jade has not returned to canon.
Thankfully, Toxic Girl Cosplay shared her fantastic Mara Jade cosplay from New York Comic Con 2017, perfectly capturing the character's distinct look and style.
Mara Jade sporting her classic purple lightsaber, rather than the blue one she received from Luke, implies that the cosplay depicts the character from either her Imperial days or her time on the run.
Should Mara Jade Return To Star Wars Canon? With The Mandalorian and its spinoff shows set to adapt the Thrawn trilogy, this could result in Star Wars canon solving its Mara Jade conundrum. The time period would certainly be right, as both The Mandalorian and Heir to the Empire begin approximately five years after Return of the Jedi. Luke has started his Jedi Temple on Ossus, and Grand Admiral Thrawn will debut in Ahsoka, so all the pieces are in place for Mara Jade to return. She could even be a former Imperial Inquisitor that answered to Palpatine, largely maintaining her role in Legends while integrating her story into canon.
