Dave Filoni shares his opinion on the never-ending debates about Star Wars canon and how he views it. Filoni has loved Star Wars for the majority of his life, and he was taught about the world by George Lucas himself. Filoni is an expert on Star Wars and has been the most consistent voice steering Star Wars television beside Lucas himself. He worked with Lucas on The Clone Wars animated film and series, helmed Rebels, and has collaborated with Jon Favreau on The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.
Screen Rant caught up with Filoni after the Lucasfilm Showcase panel at Star Wars Celebration, where it was announced that he will be directing one of the three upcoming Star Wars films. Filoni weighed in on the never-ending debates about Star Wars canon, explaining how his deep love of Star Wars, storytelling, and learning from Lucas impacted his own view on this topic. Check out Filoni's thoughts on Star Wars canon below:
People get into all these debates of what's canon and what's not, and sometimes forget the special nature of telling a good story and creating great characters.
Part of the fan debate in the past always used to be, "What's canon? What's not?" because there was George, and we always knew George was the canon. I look at it very broadly, and I just say there's a love of Star Wars. Because I knew George, I worked with him, and none of us are going to be him. But we love the Galaxy he created, and we're very much a product of it; growing up with it.
Star Wars Canon Is Continuously Evolving Star Wars is a unique franchise because the story has never been told in chronological order. This allows the canon to evolve and change with each new installment. When Disney acquired Lucasfilm, tons of novels, comics, and even a few series were labeled Star Wars Legends, meaning they were no longer considered part of the actual Star Wars canon. However, many fans still love the Star Wars Legends stories and characters.
