Who Is Pellaeon? Thrawn"s Loyal Officer (In Legends & Canon)
Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 7.
Captain Gilad Pellaeon made his live-action debut in
The Mandalorian season 3, episode 7 "The Spies," which builds off his history as Grand Admiral Thrawn's loyal officer in Star Wars canon and Legends. First introduced alongside Thrawn in 1991's Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn, Pellaeon became a key player in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, primarily in stories set after Return of the Jedi. Pellaeon's appearances in canon have been limited compared to Legends, but with his return in The Mandalorian, he's now set up to be a central figure in Ahsoka, and possibly Dave Filoni's live-action Star Wars movie.
The Mandoverse is clearly setting up a canon adaptation of Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy, though it's unclear how the story will play out compared to Legends. Pellaeon's brief appearance in The Mandalorian is a spot-on adaptation of the character, both in appearance and how he's often the Imperial Remnant's voice of reason. At the same time, The Mandalorian revealed new connections between the Empire and the First Order, reminding that Pellaeon's history from Legends can't translate perfectly to canon. Even so, reviewing Pellaeon's past as Thrawn's right-hand man may provide insight into what path the character will take in the future.
