Marvel Has Set Up 10 Avengers Replacements For After Secret Wars

Summary
  • Marvel Studios may use Avengers: Secret Wars to replace the Avengers with a new team of superheroes for Phase 7 and beyond.
  • The X-Men, the Young Avengers, the Defenders, the Midnight Sons and the Thunderbolts are potential teams that could replace the Avengers.
  • The Fantastic Four will be crucial to the MCU's future, and could become as big as the Avengers.
As the last announced project set to feature the titular superhero team, Marvel Studios may use Avengers: Secret Wars to replace the Avengers with a new team of superpowered heroes for Phase 7 of the MCU and beyond. The members of the MCU's original Avengers team first joined forces in 2012's eponymous The Avengers, formed by SHIELD's Director Nick Fury to fight Loki and his Chitauri during the Battle of New York. Since then, the Avengers has grown in size, and has taken on more iconic villains such as Ultron, Baron Zemo, the Mad Titan Thanos, and even each other.
After the events of 2019's Avengers: Endgame, the status of the Avengers team in the MCU has been unclear, and the team isn't set to reform until 2026's Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. While this will likely see new MCU heroes banding together to form a brand-new Avengers team, 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars could mark their abrupt ending, but there are several new superhero teams who could take the Avengers' place. Marvel Studios has teased the formation of several new, highly-anticipated superhero and antihero teams in recent MCU projects, but there are a few others that haven't yet been hinted at.

Related Every Avengers Team In The MCU, Ranked By Power The original Avengers team might be the MCU's most iconic, but it is far from the only one, and the many Avengers rosters have differing power levels. 10 X-Men Could Begin A New Era Of The MCU Marvel Studios Has Confirmed The Development Of An X-Men Project Close Perhaps the most highly-anticipated team set to debut in the MCU is the X-Men. The mutant team can finally be integrated into the MCU after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and its properties in 2019, and since mutants have already started to arrive, it won't be long before the MCU's official X-Men team follows. Marvel Studios has started development on an X-Men reboot, though it will likely be several years before this is released. Before that, 2024's Deadpool 3 will catch up with X-Men members from Fox's X-Men Universe. The X-Men would be the perfect team to replace the Avengers.
Related Marvel's X-Men Movie: Everything We Know With Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's Deadpool 3 announced, MCU fans may be wondering if an X-Men movie will be following after. 9 The Young Avengers Have Already Been Teased Kamala Khan's Ms. Marvel & Kate Bishop's Hawkeye Are The First Young Avengers Members Throughout the MCU's Multiverse Saga, Marvel Studios has introduced many young heroes, spurring theories that the Young Avengers would soon be forming. While Marvel Studios initially stayed quiet on the matter, 2023's The Marvels provided the first direct tease to the Young Avengers, as Kamala Khan's Ms. Marvel approached Kate Bishop's new Hawkeye with the proposition of bringing together young superheroes, including Ant-Man's daughter, Cassie Lang. If the Avengers officially disband after Secret Wars, they could be replaced by their young proteges and legacy heroes, and the MCU's Young Avengers could carry the MCU's crossover events for years to come.
8 The Illuminati Would Form The Strongest Superhero Team Ever Doctor Strange Could Form The MCU's Official Illuminati After Multiverse Of Madness During his journey in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Doctor Strange was met by the Illuminati of Earth-838, a superhero team comprised of the leaders of other heroic groups. Including the likes of Mister Fantastic of the Fantastic Four, Professor X of the X-Men and Captain Carter of the Avengers, the Illuminati were the most powerful superhero team on Earth-838, but even they were defeated by the Scarlet Witch. It's very possible that, after his experiences, Doctor Strange will build his own Illuminati team on Earth-616, and the team's power would far surpass that of the Avengers.
7 A-Force Needs Redemption After Avengers: Endgame The MCU's All-Female Team Would Be Incredibly Powerful Now Avengers: Endgame made an attempt at bringing together the MCU's female superheroes for a moment of empowerment during the Battle of Earth, but this moment is widely considered disappointing. In an effort to redeem this cringeworthy moment, Marvel Studios may officially form the A-Force following Avengers: Secret Wars, bringing together powerful female heroes such as She-Hulk, Shuri's Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Echo. While Endgame's A-Force team boasted an impressive line-up, new, powerful heroes have been introduced more recently, which would make A-Force a much more formidable group, ready to be the perfect Avengers replacement.
6 The Defenders May Become More Comic-Accurate The Defenders Are More Than A Street-Level Team In Marvel Comics Close In January 2024, Marvel Studios integrated Netflix's Defenders Saga into the MCU's official timeline, implying the franchise may now be canon. This could lead to a return for the Defenders team, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. However, if the Defenders replace the Avengers, more powerful members will need to be included, and Marvel Comics' Defenders could inform the new roster. The likes of Doctor Strange, the Hulk, Namor and the Silver Surfer have been Defenders in the comics, and these additions could upgrade the Defenders from a street-level team to a major fixture in the MCU.
Marvel Television's Defenders Saga, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher were integrated into the MCU's timeline in conjunction with the January 2024 release of Marvel Spotlight series Echo, though their canonicity to the MCU is still disputed.
5 The Guardians Of The Galaxy Got Some New Members In Phase 5 The Original Guardians Of The Galaxy Disbanded At The End Of Vol. 3 The MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy team has always had their own adventures alongside those of the Avengers, but they could become a more prominent superhero team in the MCU's future. With Marvel Studios exploring more of the MCU's cosmos, it's possible the Guardians of the Galaxy could lead the charge across the universe, though a new director would need to take over, as James Gunn has departed Marvel Studios to become co-CEO of DC Studios. With new members including Adam Warlock, Phyla and a beefed-up Groot, the new Guardians of the Galaxy team would be a great Avengers replacement.
4 The Midnight Sons Could Explore Darker MCU Stories Several Midnight Sons Members Have Been Introduced To The MCU The formation of the Midnight Sons hasn't yet been confirmed by Marvel Studios, but several of the supernatural team's members have recently been introduced to the MCU. Moon Knight, Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night and Elsa Bloodstone could form the basis of the Midnight Sons, while upcoming heroes such as Blade, the Hood and Wolverine could complete the team, focusing on the darker corners of the MCU. This would make for an unorthodox replacement for the Avengers, but could bring a new dynamic to the MCU, particularly if the highly-anticipated Ghost Rider also debuts in Marvel Studios' franchise.
3 The Annihilators Could Form A New Cosmic Superhero Team Many New Cosmic Heroes Have Been Teased In Recent Years In Marvel Comics, the Annihilators are a space-based team comprised of some of the most powerful and formidable superheroes. They formed with the purpose of preventing galactic war, and included heroes such as Star-Lord, Quasar, the Silver Surfer and Beta Ray Bill. While there has been no sign of this team actually coming together in the live-action MCU, several supremely powerful cosmic heroes have already been established, meaning it's possible for the Annihilators to finally band together. Peter Quill's Star-Lord could even form the new team after leaving the Guardians of the Galaxy, ready to take over from the Avengers.
2 Thunderbolts Will Debut In The MCU's Phase 5 The Thunderbolts Line-Up May Change After The Team's MCU Debut Close The next official team to form in the MCU will be the Thunderbolts, a team of reformed villains and antiheroes who are set to join forces in the MCU's Phase 5. Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts project seems to be featuring Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine as the team's Nick Fury-esque figure, implying they will be funded by the United States government and the CIA, potentially with nefarious intentions. In Marvel Comics, the Thunderbolts formed in the wake of the Avengers disbanding, so the same could be done in the live-action MCU, with new Thunderbolts teams taking on missions after Secret Wars.
The MCU's first Thunderbolts team comprises Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes' Winter Soldier, Alexei Shostakov's Red Guardian, John Walker's US Agent, Ava Starr's Ghost and Antonia Dreykov's Taskmaster.
1 The Fantastic Four Will Be Crucial To The MCU's Future The Fantastic Four Will Be As Big As The Avengers Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot will bring Marvel's First Family into the MCU for the first time. The Fantastic Four are expected to be pivotal to the future of the MCU, and have been promised by Kevin Feige to become as big as the Avengers, meaning they would be the perfect replacement for the team. Other heroes have temporarily joined the Fantastic Four in Marvel Comics, so the same can be done in the MCU following Avengers: Secret Wars. While John Krasinski portrayed a variant of Reed Richards in Phase 4, Fantastic Four's official cast hasn't yet been confirmed.
