Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe gets imagined in a striking Avengers: Secret Wars fan poster. RDJ last played Tony Stark in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, with the hero sacrificing himself to defeat Thanos and his army. Thanks to the multiverse and reports that Marvel is considering bringing back the original Avengers, perhaps Downey Jr. could be part of Avengers: Secret Wars' cast.
On Instagram, digital artist @marvels.wolverine shared a look at RDJ's possible return as Iron Man in the upcoming Marvel movie.
Tony Stark is seen with a bulkier Iron Man armor in the fan poster, which the character could use if Downey Jr. returns, as fighting Kang the Conqueror and whatever other threats appear in Marvel's Avengers: Secret Wars will be a hard task.

Throughout its Multiverse Saga, Marvel has had actors play different versions of their characters — Benedict Cumberbatch's case in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — and multiple actors play different versions of the same character, such as what happened with the three Spider-Men in Spider-Man: No Way Home. RDJ's case could be the first one.
Avengers: Secret Wars could introduce a new Iron Man variant played by Downey, which would allow the original Tony Stark's arc to remain untouched. As Avengers: Secret Wars will feature different universes, with at least one colliding with the MCU to form an incursion, RDJ should have plenty of options to return as Tony. Marvel could also take a page from what Avengers: Endgame did, bringing back time travel to see the new Avengers recruit original members Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow.
Finally, Marvel Studios could decide to go in a comic book route for Iron Man's potential return. Downey's return could be through an AI of Tony Stark being found by either War Machine or Ironheart. AI Tony could then suit up as Iron Man once more like he did in the comics after the real Tony Stark's death, even opening the door for RDJ to possibly continue for a little longer in the MCU to train Ironheart after Avengers: Secret Wars.
