5 Months Later, I"m Still Furious About How Deadpool & Wolverine Handled Its Johnny Storm Vs Pyro Fight
Johnny Storm"s MCU fight with Pyro in
Deadpool & Wolverine is just as infuriating 5 months after it took place. Pyro and Johnny Storm are two of many Deadpool & Wolverine cameos who were once Fox-owned before Marvel reacquired the distribution rights to their respective franchises. The last time Chris Evans" Johnny Storm was seen in live-action was in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer where he and the titular team faced Galactus. Pyro, meanwhile, was last seen in X-Men: The Last Stand where he confronted and was ultimately overpowered by Iceman after ineffectually deploying his pyrokinetic powers.
After being pruned, Pyro and Johnny were among the first variants encountered by Deadpool and Wolverine in the Void. Johnny warns Deadpool and Wolverine that Pyro and his fellow mutant henchmen are approaching before attempting to face them himself, wreathing himself in flames and attempting to shoot flames at the antagonists. This, of course, is where Pyro snuffs out Johnny"s flames effortlessly, incapacitating the Human Torch and causing him to plummet to the ground and be captured by the henchmen. This is exactly what I can"t wrap my head around.
I'm Still Furious About Deadpool & Wolverine's Johnny Storm Vs Pyro Scene It Shouldn't Have Been That Easy Johnny"s defeat at the hands of Pyro might make sense on the surface as Johnny Storm can generate flames while Pyro has the power to control them. The problem, however, is that Johnny Storm is more powerful than Pyro. Not only does he boast a similar ability to control fire, but he can also generate flames and is immune to fire, whereas Pyro typically requires protective gear. Furthermore,
Pyro shouldn"t be able to simply extinguish Johnny Storm"s flames, but he would be able to redirect them. Johnny Storm should also display far more stamina than his fire-wielding rival.

Posts The worst part is that there are many examples of Johnny defeating Pyro in Marvel Comics including "Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #31" and "X-Men/Fantastic Four #1." Johnny Storm"s cosmic powers have proved repeatedly more powerful than Pyro. I know, of course, that the scene was largely supposed to be played for laughs and highlight Johnny Storm"s characteristic hubris, but
it shouldn"t be this easy. Annoyingly, the fight between the two characters was supposed to be a lot more tumultuous, but there was a last-minute decision to have Pyro make quick work of the Human Torch.
Aaron Stanford's Explanation For Why Pyro Won Only Makes It Worse There Doesn't Seem To Have Been Much Consideration For Johnny Storm Close Pyro actor Aaron Stanford spoke to RadioTimes.com about Pyro"s "fight" with Johnny Storm. He divulged that the clash was initially supposed to be much more explosive, but the actor quickly realized that
fighting a superhero wreathed in flames would be "the easiest thing in the world" for Pyro. Furthermore, Stanford and Evans filmed their scenes separately, with Stanford shooting his scenes subsequently. With all that in mind, the filmmakers decided to have Pyro snuff out Johnny"s flames within a matter of seconds. Aaron Stanford"s full quote is as follows:
"I think the initial idea was for it to be a real struggle, a real battle between two superpowers. But, as we were filming, I realized that, for Pyro, it"s not a battle because this is what he does, and he has now found himself up against the ideal opponent because it"s not a struggle. For him, this is the easiest thing in the world. Anybody else he was up against, it would be difficult. But for him, this is like a snap. So we figured out, alright, he should suck all the flame out, and then he just winks it out like it"s nothing."
I think this makes the situation even worse. Not only does the decision run roughshod over Johnny"s true power levels, but
it also looks as though it was made without much input from Chris Evans or with much consideration for Johnny Storm. Considering Johnny was part of the same resistance that would later go on to trounce Cassandra Nova"s mutant henchmen, I find it hard to believe that he could be so swiftly subdued where a non-superpowered hero such as Elektra could hold her own against multiple mutants like Pyro.
Chris Evans' Johnny Storm Deserves A Chance At Redemption After Deadpool & Wolverine Close Johnny Storm was generally underserved in Deadpool & Wolverine as a font of comedy, never getting so much as a second to shine before being swiftly killed off by Cassandra Nova. As the one representative of the Fantastic Four that appears in the movie (notwithstanding the Fantasticar driven by Cassandra Nova"s henchmen),
I can"t help but feel like Johnny should have been afforded the same level of hype and focus as his fellow resistance members. Instead, he was swiftly defeated by Pyro and then gruesomely killed off by Cassandra Nova after that embarrassment.
Given Evans" appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine was as a variant in the Void, it stands to reason that plenty more Johnny Storm variants could re-enter the MCU - preferably one whose power levels better match those of the comics.
I"m now convinced that Johnny Storm should return as part of a better role in a future MCU installment. Given Evans" appearance in
Deadpool & Wolverine was as a variant in the Void, it stands to reason that plenty more Johnny Storm variants could re-enter the MCU - preferably one whose power levels better match those of the comics. As is the case with most MCU variants, this could occur in either Avengers: Secret Wars or Avengers: Doomsday. Given Chris Evans is confirmed to be starring in the latter, I"m keeping my fingers crossed that it"s for this role.
