I"ve Changed My Mind, Clayface Would Make The Perfect The Batman 2 Villain After The DCU"s Recent Release
Clayface"s appearance in the DC Universe has convinced me that the villain could be a perfect choice for
The Batman - Part II. While I"ve been a Clayface fan since the first moment I saw the distinctive character, I"ve always been a little back and forth on the theory that Clayface could be the villain of The Batman"s sequel. Though there"s always been an undeniable appeal to the idea of Clayface appearing in the gritty world of the live-action Batman movie, there"s also always been complications around the concept that have made it a questionable potential villain selection.
However, Clayface"s debut in the DC Universe timeline has highlighted the unique advantages of adapting the character for the story of The Batman - Part II in a way that"s convinced me he could genuinely be perfect for the story. Though the DCU iteration is very different to what The Batman"s version of the antagonist would be like, it also makes several distinct benefits to using Clayface in stories clear, which all still apply for whatever franchise the character is appearing in.
The DCU's Clayface Debut Showcases His Story Potential For The Batman 2
The DC Universe"s Clayface was introduced in Creature Commandos episode 5, with Rick Flag Sr. and Eric Frankenstein accidentally encountering the villain while investigating into one Isla MacPherson. As it turns out, Isla was killed some time ago, with Clayface instead disguising himself as the professor - leading to a confrontation between the three characters that quickly becomes an all-out battle.
Creature Commandos episode 5 showcases the way in which Clayface can be uniquely useful for a mystery, as anyone who didn"t see Clayface appear for a split-second in the Creature Commandos trailer was decidedly unlikely to be able to guess he"d be this answer to whether Isla had ulterior motives. Similarly, even those who had seen the trailer would have been hard-pressed to predict the exact moment and nature of the reveal.
Though the world of The Batman and Creature Commandos are different in the sense that they"re two alternate universes - as The Batman is confirmed to be an Elseworld project, and thus separate from mainline DCU - and in the sense that they"re tonally different releases, Creature Commandos still does an effective job of establishing just how useful and interesting it can be to have Clayface involved in a mystery plotline. With The Batman"s original mystery being such a compelling part of its story, this sequence works as a reminder of the unique potential this specific villain could bring to the sequel.
Creature Commandos' Clayface Shows How The Villain Could Fit The Batman's Tone Close Creature Commandos episode 5 - which places Clayface against Flag Sr. and Frankenstein, who are both established as hardened fighters in their own right - naturally manages to also show off a range of the shapeshifting villain"s unique powers and skillset as well.
There"s an inherent sense of horror that"s hard to avoid with Clayface"s abilities, as demonstrations of Clayface trying to crush or suffocate people with his clay body generally leans into actual horror movie territory, and his capacity for changing shape into other people is often able to veer into the same category as well.
As such, Creature Commandos" Clayface manages to once again underline the potential of a truly horrifying antagonist for The Batman - Part II, much in the way that the original movie made sure to show The Riddler as a serial killer responsible for a wide array of Saw-like deadly traps. While this Riddler was more grounded than his clay comrade conventionally is, even this isn"t impossible to translate into a more realistic iteration, as keeping Clayface in the form of one of his human dopplegangers - with some moments suggesting more lies beneath - could prove truly effective tonally.
The Different Number Of Clayface Adaptations Prove He's A Perfect The Batman 2 Choice Close
As a well-known figure in Batman"s rogues gallery, Clayface has had many iterations over the years - particularly in recent history, helping show the potential The Batman - Part II has to once again adapt the character and adjust them in a different way, since there"s a significant precedent for various releases taking Clayface in different directions. Creature Commandos" Clayface is played by Alan Tudyk, who notably also voices a more friendly Clayface Harley Quinn cartoon. Comparatively, Clayface"s story in Batman Resurrection took a more grounded approach to the villain"s origin story, giving insight into the body horror potential of the character.
Creature Commandos debuted on December 5, 2024, and will continue to release until January 9, 2025.
Indeed, it"s even theorized that The Penguin introduced The Batman universe"s version of Clayface via Eve Karlo - who shares her last name with the original Clayface, Basil Karlo - since the character replicates the form of Oz"s mother in the show"s ending, and even before then is said to change her form in a sense, albeit more to suit her clientele. Combined with the array of other figures who"ve adapted Clayface in various ways, I truly do think it"s possible for Clayface to take a new shape in
The Batman - Part II, though it"s not clear what the future will hold.
