X-Men ’97 Episode 8 Secretly Pointed Out A Dark Truth About Wolverine"s Marvel Movies

Warning: This article contains spoilers for X-Men '97, "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 1."
Summary
  • Morph made a joke about Wolverine being the only surviving member of the X-Men team in X-Men '97 episode 8's dark potential future.
  • Wolverine was previously the sole surviving X-Men member in 2017's Logan, after Professor X's seizure killed the rest of the team.
  • Deadpool & Wolverine's trailer has teased Wolverine being the only survivor of some mysterious event in his home reality.
The dark truth of Wolverine's past and future storylines was pointed out in X-Men '97 episode 8, perhaps spelling tragedy for the remaining X-Men members. After Bastion revealed himself in X-Men '97 episode 7, episode 8, "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 1," the first chapter in X-Men '97's three-part finale, saw the human-Sentinel hybrid put Operation: Zero Tolerance into action. With Wolverine preparing to enter the MCU in Deadpool & Wolverine, X-Men '97 episode 8 might have already teased his destiny, as he could end up as the sole survivor of the X-Men's battle against Bastion and his Prime Sentinels.
Although Hugh Jackman's Wolverine took center-stage throughout 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise, X-Men '97 has done a good job of giving much-needed attention to other members of the X-Men. X-Men '97 episode 8 gave Wolverine an epic battle scene, however, in which he fought several Prime Sentinels in the X-Mansion with Nightcrawler's help, but while the pair managed to take down these terrifying villains, the future might not be so bright for the X-Men. Hugh Jackman's Wolverine will be the center of attention again in Marvel Studios' upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, which could bring X-Men '97's dark premonition to fruition.

Morph Joked About Wolverine’s Future In X-Men ’97 Episode 8 X-Men '97 episode 8, "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 1," saw the X-Men team up with Cable, who revealed more about his appearance in episode 5, "Remember It," moments before the attack on Genosha. Cable explained that the attack on Genosha would kick-start a 300-year-long Evolutionary War that leads to the enslavement of mutants in a human utopia. Evidently, the X-Men won't go down without a fight, but Morph had other ideas, joking that this would simply be "another dystopia where Logan's the last to die." While funny, this line hints at a darker destiny for Wolverine across the multiverse.
Wolverine Was The Last Surviving X-Men Member In 2017’s Logan Close Morph's joke was seemingly only referring to Wolverine's ability to rapidly heal his body after injury. This mutation makes Logan practically immortal, allowing him to survive events that would easily kill off many other mutants. The impact of this was seen in 2017's Logan, which took place in a future where Professor X's telepathic seizures had wiped out the X-Men and many other civilians, leaving Wolverine as the only surviving X-Men member, tasked with taking care of Charles Xavier in his old age. Of course, not even Wolverine survived the events of Logan, but this gives weight to Morph's comment.
Wolverine is perhaps the most enduring member of the X-Men team through his various adaptations, but Logan proved just how detrimental this long life and healing ability can be. Professor X's inadvertent seizure eradicated Logan's found family, leaving him as the sole survivor in a sort of dystopian world where no new mutants had been born in 25 years. Wolverine was the subject of several dystopian storylines in Marvel Comics, so it made sense that Fox was inspired by these for Logan, but Morph's joke about Logan's survival through this turmoil could prove a darker destiny for the clawed mutant.

Deadpool & Wolverine Seems To Be Repeating Wolverine’s Tragic Destiny While potentially referencing the events of 2017's Logan, Morph's joke in X-Men '97 episode 8 could also have teased a major storyline for Marvel Studios' upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine. Hugh Jackman is set to return as Wolverine in the Phase 5 project, but Deadpool & Wolverine's first official trailer teased the idea of him portraying a very different Wolverine to the one audiences know and love from Fox's X-Men franchise. Both Deadpool and operatives of the Time Variance Authority have hinted at something devastating befalling Wolverine's mysterious home reality, leaving Logan, once again, as the sole survivor of these events.

The fact that Wolverine was the sole surviving X-Men member in Logan, has been teased to be the last remaining hero in Deadpool & Wolverine, and has been joked about outliving the other X-Men members in X-Men '97 hints at a dark fate for the beloved hero. Wolverine is perhaps destined to see all his friends perish, whether that be because of Professor X's seizures, Bastion's Evolutionary War, or some unknown event in the MCU's timeline. While X-Men '97 sidelined Wolverine for several episodes, he may now be getting some focus, but this could spell bad news for the X-Men.
