X-Men "97 Perfectly Pays Off A 24 Year Old Costume Joke With Cable"s Return

Summary
  • X-Men '97 pays off a 24-year-old joke through Cable's return and a humorous Black Leather vs. Yellow Spandex callback.
  • The show's final trailer hints at the X-Men coming together to combat Bastion and Prime Sentinels, setting the stage for a major fight.
  • Fans are likely hoping for more colorful and faithful costumes in the MCU like those in X-Men '97, contrasting with the black leather uniforms in Fox's live-action films.
X-Men '97 pays off a 24-year-old joke thanks to the return of Nathan Summers' Cable. The son of Scott Summers' Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor who was sent to the future as a baby to save his life, Cable has returned to the present to aid the X-Men in their upcoming fight against Bastion and his Prime Sentinels. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that Cable is going to suit up just like his fellow mutant heroes of the present day.
In X-Men '97's final trailer, the X-Men are reuniting and gathering their strength for the major fight that's still to come. Having been revealed in X-Men '97 episode 7, Bastion is seemingly the mastermind behind the Fall of Genosha and is in league with Mister Sinister, working to turn humans into Prime Sentinels using advanced future cybernetics. This explains Cable's return along with Cyclops' revelation that the time-traveling mutant is his son whom he had just sent away. To that end, the end of this new X-Men '97 trailer features a perfect moment between Cyclops and Cable.

X-Men '97 Perfectly Calls Back To The X-Men Movie's Yellow Spandex Joke "What Did You Expect, Black Leather?" Your browser does not support the video tag. Less than enthused about the blue and yellow uniform Cyclops hands him at the end of the trailer, Cable questions whether he's going to war to going to the circus. This prompts a hilarious response from Scott who asks if Nathan expected black leather instead. To that end, it's a great inverse of the joke from 2000's X-Men when Hugh Jackman's Wolverine was complaining about their leather suits with James Marsden's Cyclops asking if he'd have preferred yellow spandex.
One of the best jokes from Fox's very first X-Men movie, it's very cool to see it getting a nod over two decades later in X-Men '97. That said, it also helps correct a common complaint made by fans ever since that first movie. Ultimately, there are more fans that not who'd very much like to see more colorful and vibrant costumes like the one seen on the page and in X-Men '97, rather than the all-black leather and muted uniforms that have been predominate in the vast majority of Fox's live-action X-Men movies.
Why The X-Men Movie's Yellow Spandex Joke Has Aged So Poorly "What Would You Prefer, Yellow Spandex?" (Yes, Yes I Would) Close Understandably, the X-Men's black leather uniforms came from an initial desire to have the emerging superhero genre of the modern era taken seriously in a realistic live-action medium. However, Cyclops' "yellow spandex" joke came to represent what many saw as Fox's ongoing unwillingness to commit. The X-Men's more faithful costumes from the comics were never fully embraced, even as both the genre and audiences evolved and matured.
There were times when more comic-accurate suits were featured, like at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse. However, they were never seen again with the switch to matching yellow and blue Grant Morrison-era-inspired suits in Dark Phoenix (perceived as a step backward after the Apocalypse tease despite the move away from black). As such, one of the best things about X-Men '97 has been the return to unique and colorful costumes. Hopefully, it's something the MCU will emulate once the mutant heroes are fully integrated into the MCU.
