Madame Web marks Sony's first superhero movie of 2024, one that provides several Easter eggs and references to other Marvel properties. Set within the Sony Spider-Man Universe, the film focuses on the Marvel Comics character of Madame Web. The movie takes a somewhat different approach to the character from Marvel Comics, having Dakota Johnson play a more grounded version of the Spider-Man-adjacent antihero in Madame Web's cast of characters.
Being set in the same universe as Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius, it was expected that Madame Web would have Easter eggs connecting the film to its peers. However, the film's early-2000s setting meant Madame Web's Easter eggs were more connected to the broader character of Spider-Man than other properties. With the tagline "Her web connects them all," Madame Web is Sony's first Marvel release of 2024 to reference the wider Marvel Comics world of Spider-Man.

16 The Powers Of Spider-Man Have An Added Lore Element In Madame Web The titular franchise hero's history is changed for the Sony Spider-Man Universe. Madame Web's first reference to the wider lore of Spider-Man is a major change from Marvel Comics. The film opens with Cassandra Webb's mother looking for a spider with healing properties in the Amazon. After being betrayed by Ezekial Sims and shot, Constance is rescued by the mythic "Spider-People." This group possesses the powers of a spider and even wears clothes that look similar to Spider-Man's comic designs, despite Spider-Man not existing in the universe yet.
15 Madame Web Makes A Reference To Aunt May Spider-Man's lovable Aunt is mentioned if not seen in Sony's latest movie. Close After the film's opening, Cassandra Webb's life as a New York City paramedic is shown. She works with a young Ben Parker, played by Adam Scott. As the two wind down after a shift, Ben remarks that he is dating someone new. Cassie asks for her name, which Ben neglects to tell her, prompting Cassie to tease that the relationship must be serious. This is an obvious reference to Aunt May, a prominent figure in almost every iteration of Spider-Man's stories.
14 Cassandra Webb Visits A Very Important Baby Shower Madame Web's Aunt May reference is not the last nod to Peter Parker's life in the film. After the Aunt May Easter egg in Madame Web, the film shows Cassie attending a baby shower for Ben's sister-in-law. This woman is none other than Mary Parker, the mother of Peter Parker in Marvel Comics. The baby shower is to celebrate the upcoming birth of Mary's son whose name is avoided, but evidently positioned to be the future Spider-Man of the SSU.
13 Cassie Webb Wears A Lot Of Red & Blue Clothes The references to Marvel's iconic Web-Slinger keep coming. If the hints at Mary's baby shower were insufficient to tease Peter Parker, Madame Web continues referencing the comic character. Throughout the film, Cassie is shown wearing red and blue. Her red coat is often paired with blue jeans, subconsciously evoking the feel of Spider-Man through the character's classic comic book colors.
12 Madame Web References The Mysterious Past Of Richard Parker Sony Pictures' common Richard Parker trend continues in Madame Web. One of the more common changes to Sony's version of Spider-Man that began in The Amazing Spider-Man was the mysterious past of Richard Parker. The Andrew Garfield-led movies showcased how Richard Parker had a dark history tied to Peter's origins as Spider-Man. While this is not exactly the case in Madame Web, the film references that Richard Parker is always away from home on unknown work business. It seems Sony is reusing the concept that Richard Parker has a veiled past for whatever iteration of Spider-Man the studio is building toward.
11 Madame Web’s Mary Parker Has A Subtle Nod To Spider-Man The future of Peter Parker is not-so-subtly teased in Madame Web. Close Towards the end of the baby shower scene in Madame Web, Mary Parker mentions how active her baby is. She states that he is always "leaping around," a somewhat on-the-nose reference to Peter Parker's later powers. As is known of Peter's future, he will take to the streets of New York City, "leaping around" to fight crime.
10 Madame Web Includes A Lot Of Webbing Iconography The film makes a note of referencing its titular character's powers where possible. Throughout the film, Madame Web's cinematography includes several web-like patterns. From cracks in glass windows resembling a spider's web to the mesh of curtains resembling the same, Madame Web continuously references the connection Cassie has to the Spider-People. This is even shown at the end of the film when Mary Parker's son is born, as a web-like curtain is shown hanging above the newborn Peter.
9 Madame Web Refuses To Acknowledge The Word “Spider-Man” The film avoids ushering the name of the hero who lends his name to the franchise it is part of. Despite Madame Web being set in the Sony Spider-Man Universe, the film makes what seems like a concerted effort to avoid using the word "Spider-Man." When Ezekiel is shown climbing on walls to chase the three young girls in the film, they refer to him only as "Ceiling Man." Similarly, the Amazonian tribe is called "Spider-People," and Julia says that Ezekiel is like "some sort of spider... person." While this may not seem like much of a Madame Web Easter egg, the lengths the screenwriters went to in order to avoid using the hero's name makes it class as one.
Related 10 Reasons Madame Web's Reviews Are So Negative The reviews for Madame Web have dropped, and some elements explain why the latest entry in Sony"s Spider-Man Universe has received negative feedback.
8 Madame Web Features Sony’s Version Of A Hulk Reference The giant green rage monster somewhat makes his way into the Sony Spider-Man Universe. Midway through Madame Web, the characters of Anya, Julia, and Mattie decide to go to a nearby diner to get some food. Mattie says to the other girls "You won't like me when I'm hangry." This is Sony's own way of referencing the character of Hulk. In the original The Incredible Hulk TV show, the line "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry" is uttered and has since become synonymous with the character of the Hulk.
7 Britney Spears’ “Toxic” Foreshadows An Ezekiel Sims Attack The early-2000s hit allows Madame Web to make several fun references. Shortly after entering the aforementioned diner, Anya, Julia, and Mattie begin dancing to Britney Sears' "Toxic." The song itself is an Easter egg to the early-2000s setting of the film, while it also foreshadows Ezekiel Sims' inevitable attack. Sims has the power to poison victims with his spider abilities, set up by the song "Toxic."
6 Madame Web Changes Spider-Man’s Iconic Words "With great power, comes great responsibility" gets another modern update. Spider-Man's iconic words have been prevalent throughout most iterations of the character. While Spider-Man does not appear in this film, the words are present only switched to fit Cassandra Webb's story. Cassandra visits the Spider-People of the Amazon, and one of them tells her that when she "takes on the responsibility, great power will come."
5 Mattie’s Clothes In Madame Web Reference Spider-Man Mattie takes a page out of Cassie's book by wearing Spider-Man clothes. In the third act of Madame Web, Mary Parker goes into labor. As she is in the back of the car driving to the hospital, Mattie can be seen in the passenger seat. In this scene, Mattie is wearing a bright blue and red hoodie, coincidentally, as the future Spider-Man is being born in the back seat.
Mattie's superhero suit in the film's flashbacks also represent the blue and red of Spider-Man.
4 The Pepsi Sign That Defeats Ezekiel Nods To Spider-Man Ezekiel's defeat references the character whose comics the former first appeared in. After the film's climactic third act, Ezekiel is killed by a falling sign that spells out "Pepsi-Cola." The two letters that fall from the sign and signal Ezekiel's demise are "S" and "P." These are another Madame Web Easter egg to Marvel's Web-Slinger as they are the first two letters of Spider-Man.
3 Madame Web Gets A Comic Accurate Look Cassie's injuries give her a more Marvel Comics look as Madame Web. Close Cassie is injured in the final act of Madame Web and is taken to hospital in the aftermath. Cassie loses her sight because of a firework and is paralyzed in Ezekiel's attack. This leads to the final scene of the film in which Cassie is wearing a bandage across her eyes before foregoing the wrappings for sunglasses while sitting in an automated wheelchair. This emulates the look of Madame Web from Marvel Comics, given the film's hero her comic-accurate appearance.

2 Madame Web Teases Uncle Ben’s Future Ben Parker's future as Peter's caretaker is referenced. As Cassie recuperates in the hospital, Julia tells her that Ben's nephew was born with no issues and is perfectly healthy. Julia also states that Ben reportedly loves being an uncle, as it allows for all the fun with no responsibility. Cassie mysteriously replies "That's what he thinks," teasing the fact that Ben will eventually have to raise Peter following the deaths of Richard and Mary as is the case in most Spider-Man stories.
1 Madame Web’s Ending Theme Mirrors Iconic Spider-Man Scores Spider-Man's iconic music trends continue in Madame Web. The final Easter egg found in Madame Web is in the film's final scene. As Cassie is visualizing the future of Anya, Julia, and Mattie as Spider-Women, familiar musical notes can be heard accompanying the scene. While the Madame Web's composer, Johan Söderqvist, puts his own twist on the score, the film ends with similar music to that which often accompanies the hero Sony's Spider-Man franchise is so misguidedly named after.
