James Gunn Teases DC Universe Holiday Special Plans & Asks Fans To Choose

James Gunn may already be setting up more DC Universe plans for 2025 as the DC Studios boss gives a new update on potential projects in the reboot. While the Creature Commandos TV show will kickstart the DC Universe release schedule later this week on Max, more movies and TV shows are on their way for 2025 and beyond. However, with Gunn leading the DC Universe after his time with Marvel Studios, a familiar element might be making its way into DC Studios" upcoming franchise.
Gunn recently asked his followers on Bluesky about what they would think of the prospects of DC Studios producing a TV Christmas Special, using his Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special as an example, which was one of the final things he did for Marvel Studios before being hired as the DC Studios co-CEO. Without giving any clues away, Gunn specifically asked the audience which DC character they would want to see lead their own TV Christmas Special, stating the following:

If DC Studios was to produce a TV Christmas Special starring one or more of our DC characters (in the tradition of the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special), who would you want it to be?

What James Gunn's DC Universe Holiday Special Question Means For The Franchise Close Even though Gunn may not have listed any specific heroes or villains in his original post, it wouldn"t come as a surprise if DC Studios have already begun to develop various ideas for DC Universe Holiday Specials to air in 2025. While they may not have announced any Holiday Specials for DC Universe"s Chapter 1 back in January 2023, Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran made it very clear that the initial projects that were announced were not the entirety of Chapter 1, meaning that Holiday Specials could have been in development or filming this entire time.
The fact that Gunn is asking the DC Universe audience what characters they think would make for a perfect Holiday Special shows that DC Studios wants to hear from the fans. Even if not every single suggestion comes to fruition, it"s a great way for fans to participate in Gunn"s DC Universe outside of just seeing the actual products that come out on the big and small screens. That said, whether DC Studios will reveal what Holiday Special plans they may have in store anytime soon remains to be seen.

The idea of seeing Holiday Specials in Gunn"s DC Universe would be another way for DC Studios to make itself stand out from the DCEU movie timeline, which never took the opportunity to explore that concept. With so many DC characters that DC Studios can use in live-action and animation, it would be a tremendous amount of fun to see some of them get their debuts in Holiday Specials before making their way into the main DC Universe projects. Hopefully, 2025 will reveal more about what plans Gunn and DC Studios may or may not have in terms of DC Universe Holiday Specials.
