Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman & Lois Spinoff Comments Mean I’m Desperately Hoping 1 Star’s Sequel Pitch Can Come True

Tyler Hoechlin"s comments about a Superman & Lois spinoff have raised my hopes that a sequel series could be on the cards down the line, despite the DC show coming to an end sooner than previously planned. The Superman & Lois season 4 ending provided an emotional conclusion to a stellar take on the Man of Steel, combining an iconic comic story with new heartwarming and heartbreaking moments. Though it"s entirely possible this is the last we"ll see of these specific versions of the characters, I can"t help but hold out hope for more.
While there have been many live-action Superman shows in the time since the character first appeared in comic pages, Superman & Lois still felt like something special, with its focus on Clark as a person who simply happened to be capable of superhuman feats bringing a real relatability and warmth to the series that makes the idea of a follow-up so promising. This promise is further teased by not only Tyler Hoechlin"s comments on the subject, but also by the fascinating spinoff pitch created by another member of the Superman & Lois season 4 cast, which could work especially well now as a result of the show"s finale.
Tyler Hoechlin's Superman & Lois Spinoff Comments Make A Sequel Series Feel More Possible The Superman & Lois Star Has Expressed An Interest In A Spinoff Series Close While the Superman & Lois ending concluded things on a very final note, the timeskip in the series did leave a window open for a spinoff. In a panel hosted by ScreenRant"s Joe Deckelmeier at the San Francisco Fan Expo, Tyler Hoechlin addressed the possibility of a spinoff and expressed interest in it, stating he "would totally do animation," and joking "I don"t have to put the suit on for that, right?" While Hoechlin confirmed he was satisfied with the show"s ending, he mentioned, "the great thing about the [superhero] genre and the multiverse" is that "there"s always opportunities."
Superman & Lois ending with season 4 appeared to be somewhat reflective of the changing shape of DC"s on-screen superhero world, with The CW moving away from superhero releases following this show and its final connections to the Arrowverse, and DC Studios bringing the DC Universe in for start fresh, with its first release coming in the same month Superman & Lois concluded. As such, it"s possible that the restructuring and reconfiguring of the DC landscape could open up new opportunities for a spinoff to emerge, especially since there"s already a solid idea for one that could be made reality.
Alex Garfin Has A Perfect Follow-Up Superman & Lois Series Pitch There's Already A Great Idea For A Superman & Lois Spinoff Close In an interview with ScreenRant, Jordan Kent actor Alex Garfin discussed the ideas he had come up with for Superman & Lois, both in terms of an unused season 5 pitch, and a concept he"d worked on regarding a spinoff starring Clark and Lois" two children. Garfin"s spinoff pitch focused around Jordan and Jonathan"s future following their graduation from high school, with the actor explaining:
Yeah, actually, I was coming up with an idea for a spin off at one point where Jordan and Jonathan are finally going to "college." The college turns out to be set up by the DoD, and it"s this place that the DoD is kind of keeping all these super-kids prisoner. In a way, it"s a lot like the Tag Harris storyline, but it went [in] a bit of a different direction in that it turns out that this is actually an old, outdated program from the Soviet era, and that they"re keeping these kids almost like nuclear weapons, because the Soviets still have theirs. And eventually they"re fighting each other, but then they ended up teaming up, realizing that they were fighting other people"s wars and toppling governments. It got really political and strange and kind of a little more global. I would love to make that show a reality one of these days, I really would.
Garfin"s idea makes sense given Superman & Lois serves as an extended origin story for both of the Superboys, with Jonathan finally gaining powers of his own after years in Superman & Lois season 4. Since there"s not a lot of time in the final season to show the duo coming into their own as a pair of superheroes who can lean on one another, this idea holds a lot of promise, particularly since it would also allow for follow-ups like showing what happened to Natalie Irons after the end of the main events of season 4, since she is shown working alongside them and their fathers in a superhero team as Starlight.
Similarly, the Department of Defense storyline saw little follow-up after Sam Lane"s death in the final season of the show, despite the institution being a core part of other stories even when Sam stepped down from his position in it. As such, a spinoff centered on their dealings following season 4 could provide a more satisfying payoff for this side of its overarching narrative, while also tying new events to prior Superman & Lois storylines like the one with Tag Harris that Garfin directly alludes to.
Superman & Lois' Ending Makes A Sequel Spinoff A Perfect Story Possibility Superman & Lois' Ending Timeskip Lends Itself Well To A Future Spinoff Close Superman & Lois" ending ensured audiences learned what happened at the end of Clark and Lois" lives, but the focus on the two titular characters after the timeskip means there are a lot of gaps in what viewers are aware of. The finale makes it clear that both Jordan and Jonathan eventually settle down and have children, but it"s a quick jump from the twins being young heroes alongside their dad, Steel and Starlight to them becoming adults with kids of their own. With so much of the series focusing around the teens growing up, questions around what their missing years looked like are inevitable.
In the Superman & Lois finale, Clark says he got 32 more years before his eventual death, leaving decades open for a spinoff to explore.
This gap provides the perfect opportunity for a spinoff exploring the period between the main events of the Superman & Lois ending, and the huge timeskip that sees them as grown men. A lot clearly takes place during this time, and knowing that things end seemingly happy for the duo doesn"t preclude them from having an interesting side story focusing on how they got to that point all those years later. Indeed, this can in some ways make a spinoff all the more interesting, since we know the start and end points of the characters" stories, but not what path leads them there.
The Superman & Lois finale even teases that the pair have unique powers they can use together in some of its last scenes when Jordan revives Jonathan, which is a story that has a lot of promise in terms of a follow-up spinoff. To add to the deal, a spinoff set before the final events that Superman & Lois shows would allow both Tyler Hoechlin"s Superman and Elizabeth Tulloch"s Lois Lane to return to the screen, allowing us to get another look at the beloved iterations of the characters without taking away from their impactful endings.
