The MCU"s X-Men Reboot Can Set Up A Tragic End For A Controversial Avenger

Summary
  • Mutants are slowly being introduced into the MCU, with the X-Men reboot expected to bring in fresh faces.
  • After her recent disappointing spin in The Marvels, Brie Larson's Carol Danvers may be removed from the MCU, and one X-Men member could set this up.
  • Rogue stole Carol Danvers' powers in Marvel Comics, which could mark the perfect farewell to the strangely-controversial Avenger in the MCU.
The introduction of Marvel Studios' mutant characters in the X-Men reboot in the MCU could set up a tragic ending for one of the franchise's strongest and most controversial Avengers. Marvel Studios began to integrate mutants into the MCU after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox's properties in 2019, beginning with Ms. Marvel's Kamala Khan and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's Namor. This has been a slow process so far, but 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine and Marvel Studios' upcoming X-Men reboot are expected to bring mutants into the MCU en masse, introducing new versions of some of Marvel Comics' most popular superheroes.
While the likes of Professor X, Wolverine and Beast have already been teased in the MCU, there are still many members of the X-Men that haven't been mentioned or seen yet. After several recent disappointing releases during Marvel Studios' Multiverse Saga, the MCU's official X-Men are expected to revitalize the franchise, introducing fresh faces that could spearhead stories in the MCU for years to come. However, as many new characters will soon be debuting, several veteran superheroes may unfortunately be on their way out, particularly those involved in some of the MCU's lowest-rated projects since the franchise began in 2008.

Related 10 Biggest Challenges With Introducing The X-Men Into The MCU The X-Men are all set to make their MCU debut, but Marvel must overcome several challenges to make the mutant heroes work within the franchise. Captain Marvel’s Future After The Marvels Is Uncertain One of these recent disappointments for Marvel Studios was the sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel, 2023's The Marvels. On paper, bringing together Brie Larson's Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan in an epic space-faring adventure should have been a huge success. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough of a draw, which led to The Marvels becoming the lowest-grossing project in the MCU, despite mostly positive audience reviews. The Marvels failed to match the success of its predecessor, which may put Brie Larson's future as Carol Danvers' Captain Marvel in jeopardy, as it's unlikely she'll get another sequel.
In February 2024, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that Marvel Studios would be slowing down output, and focusing on the MCU's more popular and low-risk franchises. After The Marvels' abysmal performance at the global box office, this is likely to mean that the Captain Marvel franchise won't be revisited for quite some time, especially since Brie Larson's Carol Danvers has been one of the most criticized superheroes in the MCU's history. Even though the criticism of Captain Marvel is largely unjustified, it still puts a sour note on the cosmic hero, and may convince Marvel Studios to remove her entirely.

Rogue Absorbed Carol Danvers’ Ms. Marvel Powers In Marvel Comics Close While it would be a shame for Captain Marvel to be removed from the MCU, Marvel Studios may be setting up the perfect way for her departure to make sense on-screen. It's very likely that Anne Marie's Rogue will be introduced in Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot, and the MCU could finally adapt her long-running rivalry with Carol Danvers. In one of Rogue's first and most powerful Marvel Comics storylines, she absorbs Carol Danvers' abilities, who was then going by Ms. Marvel, and leaves the superhero powerless and without her memories. This was detailed in 1992's Marvel Super-Heroes (Vol. 2) #11.
At this time, Rogue was a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, working under the command of her adoptive mother, Mystique. Danvers' memories were partially restored by Professor X, but the then-powerless Ms. Marvel abandoned the Avengers and began working alongside the X-Men instead, berating her former teammates for not helping her. Rogue and Carol Danvers fought many more times, even after Danvers regained her abilities and Rogue had become a member of the X-Men, and this intense and complex dynamic could be the perfect way to bring Rogue into the MCU, and perhaps bid farewell to Captain Marvel.
Carol Danvers’ MCU Departure Could Set Up Rogue As A Powerful Villain Rogue debuted in Marvel Comics as a supervillain, working alongside her adoptive mother, Mystique, and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, but this aspect of Rogue's personality hasn't been seen on-screen. 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise introduced Anna Paquin's Rogue as a young runaway who found her way to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters after befriending Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. Paquin's Rogue was never shown with villainous tendencies, and was in fact a very gentle and grounding character in the franchise, but Marvel Studios could make the MCU's new Rogue much more comic-accurate, particularly by bringing her into conflict with Captain Marvel.
Related 10 Powers Rogue Never Used In Fox's X-Men Movies Rogue is an incredibly powerful mutant in Marvel Comics, but she never quite reached her full potential in Fox's original X-Men trilogy. There's been no official confirmation of what the future holds for Brie Larson's Captain Marvel in the MCU, but it's possible that Rogue could be introduced to steal her power and leave her without a real place in the franchise. This would certainly be a very emotional farewell for Captain Marvel, but would allow Rogue to prove her strength and villainy from the get go. Establishing Rogue as an MCU villain who is willing to steal the powers of more-established superheroes would create powerful moments, and would make her evolution into a superhero and X-Men team member even more satisfying.
Captain Marvel’s Ending Can Lead To Her Becoming More Powerful Than Ever While Rogue's MCU debut could be used to simply eliminate Carol Danvers' Captain Marvel from the MCU after a disappointing run in The Marvels, it's possible that this could actually set up Danvers for an even more powerful role. In Marvel Comics, soon after Rogue had absorbed her abilities and she had left the Avengers for the X-Men, Carol Danvers was subject to torturous genetic experiments by the parasitic Brood aliens, which transformed her into Binary, a being who could tap into the unprecedented power of a White Hole, which allowed Carol Danvers to beat Rogue in their next battle.
This means that Rogue stealing Carol Danvers' powers in the MCU could lead to her becoming Binary, and this has perhaps already been teased in 2023's The Marvels. The Marvels' post-credits scene saw Monica Rambeau trapped in an alternate reality inhabited by the X-Men, including Kelsey Grammer's Beast and Lashana Lynch's Maria Rambeau, who sports a red-and-white costume in the same design as Binary from Marvel Comics. This suggests that the rivalry between Rogue and Captain Marvel has already begun in the MCU's multiverse, so could also unfold in the MCU's main continuity, perhaps in Marvel Studios' upcoming X-Men reboot.
