Spider-Man Actor Addresses “Very Suspicious Phone Call” That Led To 2025 Marvel Casting

As Spider-Man is about to make his latest appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor who is bringing the latest take on Peter Parker to life opens up on the journey of getting cast. While the web-crawler hasn"t been seen in the MCU timeline since 2021"s Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel Studios is finally bringing a new project focusing on Peter - but with a catch. Not only will this be through the animated Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man series, but it will also take place on a different Earth in the MCU multiverse.
With Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man getting closer to its big premiere on Disney+, Hudson Thames, who will be voicing the Marvel web-slinger, was asked on The Official Marvel Podcast about how he first landed the Spider-Man role. Thames, who also previously voiced Spider-Man in What If...?, revealed that the setup for him first getting the Spider-Man role came through very classic Disney and Marvel Studios methods, as he shared the following about his journey from being cast in What If...? to playing the lead role in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man:

Hudson Thames: I got a phone call - a very suspicious phone call - saying to show up at Disney Studios at a certain time. I was not told what it was for, why I was going - I had a feeling it was Spider-Man related, because I was kind of having some of those conversations. And yeah - I basically was told to come on down, I met up with the guys, and they kind of laid it on me and kind of asked me on the spot if I wanted to do it, and showed me the footage - and we just knocked it out.
The Official Marvel Podcast: That’s amazing. Was there a feeling when you did the What If…? episode that there would be more Spider-Man to be done? Did you have any idea about that?
Hudson Thames: No, actually. I kind of thought that What If…? - all of the What If…? material - existed in a vacuum, just because the comic kind of did. And so I thought there might be maybe another What If…? episode, but when Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man came down the line, that was such a shock, and I was so stoked.

What Hudson Thames' Spider-Man Comments Mean Close Thames" backstory on how he went from being cast in What If...? to now headlining his own MCU project showcases the synergy that continues to exist over various Marvel Studios projects. It is also a fun way to continue to lean into The Multiverse Saga, since Thames" version of the hero in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will be different from the one fans got to follow in What If...? Since Thames" What If...? variant is meant to reflect Tom Holland"s incarnation, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man serves as a clean slate for him, having more creative liberty.
As Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will explore Peter"s life without Tony Stark while having Norman Osborn as his mentor, the Phase 5 animated adventure will be able to tackle things that Holland"s movies never did. With the many Marvel characters that are also set to show up, it will be exciting to see how Thames" Spider-Man mythology gets handled. As it stands, Thames" transition from What If...? to the Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man TV show is a unique experience, as not many MCU actors have gotten to do something like this.
