Captain America: Brave New World Director Praises Cast, Teases Anthony Mackie"s Cap: "Someone We Can See Ourselves In"

Captain America: Brave New World director Julius Onah is proud of his work on the film and of stars Anthony Mackie and Danny Ramirez. In the MCU project, Mackie will headline his first movie since his character, Sam Wilson, took over the role of Captain America from Steve Rogers.
In an interview with Fandango, Onah shared his perspective on the success of the previous Captain America films: "What"s been so great about the Cap movies, in the corner that they have in the universe, is they"ve operated as these incredibly relatable, grounded thrillers, right?" The director then explained how this tone works well with Mackie"s character as the lead:
"I think it"s so important for a film like this when you have somebody like Sam Wilson at the center. This is a guy who is an earthy, grounded Captain America. Someone we can see ourselves in. Someone we can relate to because of the choice he made for how he wants to have his role work as Captain America. So bringing that style, bringing that energy, bringing that sense of danger and vulnerability. You know, I got to throw it right back to Anthony, I got to throw it right back to Danny."
Onah continued by heaping praise onto Mackie and Ramirez"s performances in Captain America: Brave New World. The filmmaker said: "Knowing the heart and soul that was going to be brought to this was so essential to me and I can"t tell you how proud I am of the heart and soul these two gentlemen put into this movie and some of the scene work that they do." He concluded by adding: "It is something really, really special that no matter what kind of genre of movie it is as a director, it"s a real treat to hop on set and know that these two guys are going to give it their all, and that"s what they did."
