Agatha All Along Episode 5 Recap: Another Death, & 7 Other Reveals

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Agatha All Along episode 5Agatha All Along episode 5 is packed with twists and important reveals about Agatha Harkness, Teen, and the rest of the MCU"s heroic witch coven. Throughout Agatha All Along"s previous four episodes, Agatha Harkness and her coven have completed three trials on the Witches" Road, witnessing Sharon Davis" untimely death and learning some truths about their past along the way. In Agatha All Along episode 4, the Green Witch Rio Vidal replaced Sharon Davis and revealed to Agatha that Teen isn"t related to her.
Agatha Harkness seemingly brushed off Rio"s reveal in order to focus on the Witches" Road"s next trial in Agatha All Along episode 5. Since the Road"s first trial was designed for Jennifer Kale and the second trial was designed for Alice Wu-Gulliver, the Witches" Road"s third trial now presents a challenge to one of the remaining witches in the coven. The trials" difficulty keeps increasing, and none of the main characters are safe.
8 The Salem Seven Are The Daughters Of Agatha Harkness' Original Coven The Salem Seven's Origin Gets An Overhaul For Their MCU Adaptation Close After witnessing Agatha Harkness and her fellow witches open a portal into the Witches" Road, the Salem Seven close in on the team and reach them before they arrive at the third trial"s base. Lilia Calderu and Rio Vidal are the only members of the coven who are acquainted with the Salem Seven"s origin. As Lilia explains, "When Agatha murdered her sister witches, she spared their young children." Rio follows, "Yeah, and then they became a feral, hive-minded coven bent on revenge." The sister witches Lilia mentions are Agatha"s original coven, who accused her of practicing dark magic and sent her to the stake.
The MCU"s Salem Seven can transform into animals, whereas their comic book counterparts have a much more varied assortment of abilities.
In the comics, the Salem Seven"s origin story is quite different. Instead of the daughters of Agatha"s original coven, all members of the Seven are Nicholas Scratch"s children, which means that they"re all Agatha"s grandchildren. And instead of persecuting Agatha for betraying their mothers, Marvel Comics" Salem Seven went after Agatha because Nicholas Scratch considered that Agatha"s departure from New Salem constituted a betrayal to her hometown. In Marvel Comics" Ultimate universe, the Salem Seven are Agatha"s superpowered avatars, which transform back into Agatha when combined.
7 Agatha's Coven Uses Brooms To Fly Flying Brooms Are A Controversial Part Of Witch Culture In MCU Lore Close When the Salem Seven approach Agatha"s coven, Teen proposes a fast and practical escape method called "hexenbesen." The coven immediately opposes the idea, but they have no alternative. The witches rip tree branches from the ground and perform a short ritual to transform them into flying brooms. When Teen asks Lilia Calderu why witches hate using brooms so much, Lilia answers, "Brooms have been co-opted by the holiday industrial complex as an absurd emblem of our culture". In other words, flying brooms have been ridiculed by pop culture for decades in the MCU as well.
Related This Tragic Darkhold Theory Completely Rewrites Scarlet Witch's MCU Story A new Agatha All Along theory completely alters Agatha Harkness" relationship to the Book of the Damned and her connection to the MCU"s Scarlet Witch.
Agatha Harkness was able to fly in the WandaVision finale, and Scarlet Witch developed the ability to fly since Captain America: Civil War, perfecting it throughout the years until she displayed perfect flying skills at the very end of WandaVision. However, flying seems to be a rare ability among witches. Agatha may have been able to fly in WandaVision because she was still powered by the Darkhold, and flight may have been one of the special skills Wanda Maximoff"s powerful chaos magic granted her. Otherwise, most witches probably need brooms to fly.
6 The Witches' Road's Third Trial Is Designed For Agatha The Witches' Road Turns Agatha Harkness' Coven Against Her Close The Witches" Road"s first two trials were element-themed. The first trial was water-themed and designed specifically to test Jennifer Kale"s ability to brew a potion, while the second trial was fire-themed and designed to test Alice Wu-Gulliver"s willingness to overcome her family"s generational curse. In Agatha All Along episode 5, the Witches" Road"s third trial defies Agatha Harkness, whose desire to regain power at all costs turns her coven against her. Jennifer, Alice, and Lilia try to "punish" Agatha in order to pass the test, but Agatha turns into a demon and escapes.
Agatha and the coven break almost all of the Ouija board"s rules
In trying to circumvent the trial"s requirements, Agatha ends up proving why she can"t be trusted. Agatha impersonates the late Sharon Davis after the coven uses a Oujia board in an attempt to distract the witches, but she fails. Then, she tries to negotiate with the coven when they try to capture her, but she finds herself forced to escape. Curiously, Agatha and the coven break almost all of the Ouija board"s rules: they don"t use the board together, they speak over each other, Agatha taunts the spirits, they ask about death, and they remove their hands from the planchette. Teen does close the session with "goodbye".
5 Agatha's Mother Evanora Harkness Returns As A Ghost Evanora Harkness Makes An Appearance To Tell Agatha How Much She Hates Her Close Agatha Harkness doesn"t turn into a demonic creature on her own when her coven turns against her. Agatha"s mother Evanora Harkness, first introduced in WandaVision, is the one possessing Agatha"s body. When Evanora exits Agatha"s body, she tells the young witches, "My coven risked everything to kill her and you fools have willingly joined her." When Agatha asks her mother why she hates her, Evanora answers, "You were born evil, I ought to have killed you the moment you left my body." If true, this means that Agatha was already evil before the Darkhold corrupted her.
Whatever Evanora Harkness wanted to do with Agatha remains a mystery
Rio Vidal knows more about Evanora Harkness than the rest of the coven, as she understands that Evanora returned because she has unfinished business with Agatha. Yet, Rio opposes the idea of leaving Agatha to die with her mother"s ghost. Whatever Evanora Harkness wanted to do with Agatha remains a mystery, as Alice intervenes by casting a spell on Agatha and Evanora, which causes Evanora to vanish. Unfortunately, this approach ends tragically for Alice.
4 Agatha Harkness Absorbs Alice Wu-Gulliver's Magic And Kills Her Agatha Regains Part Of Her Powers By Absorbing Alice's Magic And Life Force Close Against all odds, Alice Wu-Gulliver"s abrupt decision to attempt a spell on the Evanora-possessed Agatha works, and Evanora"s spirit vanishes after getting pushed out of Agatha"s body. However, Agatha instinctively takes advantage of this to absorb Alice"s magic. Just like Evanora and her coven, Alice Wu-Gulliver is unable to cut her own spell, and her body slowly decays as Agatha sucks the magic out of her.
Evanora Harkness is an original MCU character, as she doesn"t have a clear, direct counterpart in the comics.
Unfortunately, Alice Wu-Gulliver drops dead on the ground, and there"s nothing the coven can do to revive her. Not even Jennifer Kale"s panacea from Agatha All Along episode 2"s ending could have any effect on Alice"s body at this point. With Alice irreversibly killed, the coven must continue their journey down the Witches" Road without one of their members. What"s worse, the coven doesn"t get the chance to bury Alice as they did with Sharon Davis at the end of episode 2.
3 Nicolas Scratch Communicates With Teen Through A Oujia Board Nicolas Scratch Calls For Agatha Similarly To How Wanda's Children Called For Her Close While Agatha absorbs Alice"s magic, Teen tries to find a way to stop Agatha from killing Alice. He inspects the Oujia board and notices that it"s spelling out Nicholas Scratch"s name. As soon as Teen yells Nicholas" name to Agatha, she stops absorbing Alice"s magic and hears her son"s voice saying, "Mama, stop". Teen fails to save Alice, but he begins to put the pieces together around what Agatha"s son means to her.
Nicholas Scratch"s ethereal screams resemble Billy and Tommy"s screams in WandaVision"s post-credits scene, which inspired Wanda to search for her children through the multiverse.
Nicholas Scratch"s attempt to communicate with Agatha through the Ouija board officially debunks the theory that Nicholas was Teen"s secret identity, first suggested by Rio Vidal"s confession to Agatha at the end of Agatha All Along episode 4. At this point, nothing else has been confirmed about Nicholas Scratch"s fate, though it seems like he died some time in the past — possibly falling victim to Agatha in her quest to gain more power.
2 Agatha Suggests Teen Is Scarlet Witch's Son Agatha And Teen May Have Discovered Teen's Real Identity And Mother Close Following Alice Wu-Gulliver"s death, Teen confronts Agatha and tells her that he isn"t willing to kill people for the sake of magical power. Instead of feeling upset about Teen"s words or regretful over murdering Alice, Agatha smiles and teases Teen, telling him, "Are you sure? You"re so much like your mother." It seems like Rio"s reveal that Teen isn"t Nicholas Scratch left Agatha with one final contender for Teen"s real identity, and the third trial confirmed it to her: Billy Maximoff, Wanda Maximoff"s son.
Agatha likely takes offense that she was reunited with a resurrected Billy Maximoff instead of her son
In the comics, Scarlet Witch"s son Billy Maximoff is the magical superhero Wiccan, who reincarnates as Billy Kaplan after Mephisto absorbs his original self. Agatha Harkness plays a role in the original Billy"s death, as she wipes Wanda"s memories of Billy"s existence to help her move on. In the MCU, Agatha likely takes offense that she was reunited with a resurrected Billy Maximoff instead of her son — a twist of fate that can only make Agatha hate the Scarlet Witch even more.
1 Teen's Own Magical Powers Awaken Teen Uses His Magic To Attack Agatha, Lilia, And Jennifer With Mind Control Close Agatha"s suggestion that Teen resembles his mother seems to help him realize his real identity. As soon as Agatha turns around, Lilia Calderu and Jennifer Kale grab her and throw her into a puddle of quicksand. Both Lilia and Jennifer sport bright blue eyes — the same color as the sprouting energy spell on Teen"s hands. When Teen waves his hands, Lilia and Jennifer are thrown into the quicksand, and their eyes turn back to normal as they struggle to get out. Most notably, a blue headpiece similar to Wanda Maximoff"s red Scarlet Witch crown appears on Teen"s forehead.
Related Agatha All Along Kills Off 6 Major Characters In Brutal MCU Show Theory A brutal new MCU theory suggests that six major characters are going to die before Agatha All Along reaches the end of its finale episode.
2 In the source material, Billy Kaplan a.k.a. Wiccan possesses a wide array of magical powers, similar to his mother. These abilities include energy blasts, elemental manipulation, energy constructs, telepathy, telekinesis, and mind control. Wiccan also wears a headpiece in the comics, though it"s silver and quite different from Scarlet Witch"s. Teen"s headpiece in Agatha All Along episode 5"s ending looks very similar to Scarlet Witch"s, which suggests that Teen is a magic user as special as the Scarlet Witch herself.
