10 Oldest Superhero Movie Heroes Ranked By Age
In the movies of the
MCU, the
DCU, and others in the superhero genre, there are a number of heroes that are much older than others. The success of the movies of the MCU has helped the comic book movie genre grow to unprecedented heights, but with that added scope comes the need for more characters. Additionally, the fantastical and otherworldly elements of some superhero stories lend themselves to some heroes being much older than the average human.
With multiple gods and magical figures populating the movie timelines of the DCEU, the MCU, and other superhero franchises, it’s fair to say that the genre is heavily populated with heroes who are notably old. Possessing superhuman abilities or physiology often brings with it remarkable longevity, and there are certain heroes who have enjoyed notably longer lives than others. With that in mind, here are the 10 oldest superhero movie heroes, ranked by age.
10 Captain America (Steve Rogers) - 106 Years Old First Appearance: Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) Close In the MCU’s movie timeline, one of the franchise’s first heroes to be introduced was Captain America, with the hero first appearing in-universe in 1942. Steve Rogers’ origin story saw him earn the opportunity to become the MCU’s main super soldier, serving as a leader within the franchise and an inspiration to its other heroes. He’s also among the oldest heroes in the MCU, as spending years frozen in ice suspended his aging for several decades.
Steve Rogers’ canonical birthday is, fittingly, on July 4, 1918, being born on the US" Independence Day. This makes him around 106 years old in Avengers: Endgame, although between his years spent frozen and the effects of the super soldier serum, he certainly doesn’t look it. Even so, considering his date of birth, Steve Rogers was actually over 100 years old when he finally decided to retire as the MCU’s Captain America.
9 Bucky Barnes - 107 Years Old First Appearance: Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) Close Steve Rogers’ oldest and closest friend in the MCU, Bucky Barnes, also ranks among the franchise’s most aged heroes. Bucky made his debut alongside Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger, although his own route to the present day was far more traumatic than his childhood friend’s. After being captured by Hydra, Bucky was brainwashed into becoming the Winter Soldier, a legendary assassin who was only able to break free of decades of conditioning with Steve Rogers’ help in the present day.
Bucky’s canonical MCU birthdate makes him slightly older than his closest friend, being listed as March 10, 1917 (per CBR). This places his age at 107 in Avengers: Endgame, though Bucky remains an active part of the MCU, continuing to age alongside his fellow heroes. This means not just that he has proved a longer-standing hero than his childhood friend, but also that he’s one of the oldest active heroes in the genre.
8 The Ancient One - 500-700+ Years Old First Appearance: Doctor Strange (2016) Close Though the Ancient One is hardly a primary MCU hero, she certainly ranks among the forces of good within the franchise. Serving as the magical mentor of Stephen Strange, the Ancient One was first introduced in 2016’s Doctor Strange. Though she did not survive the events of the movie, she made further appearances in the MCU via Endgame’s time heist and the Multiverse Saga’s What If...?, making her a long-standing supporting character.
Though the Ancient One doesn’t have a canonical birthday in the MCU, her name is still fitting, as she’s one of the franchise’s oldest non-villain characters. While Kevin Feige suggested in 2015 (via Bustle) that The Ancient One “has been around for five hundred years,” in an interview with Vulture in 2016,
Doctor Strange’s screenwriter Jon Spaihts explained that the character had been written to be approximately 700 years old, cementing her as one of the MCU’s oldest heroic characters.
7 Wonder Woman - Between 900 & 5000 Years Old First Appearance: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) Close As one of the main heroes of the movies of the DCEU, Wonder Woman’s profile within the franchise makes her one of its most visible and popular characters. First introduced in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice alongside its eponymous DC heroes, Wonder Woman’s backstory was better explored in 2017’s Wonder Woman, set during the events of World War I. This alone establishes her as one of the oldest heroes in the superhero genre, but off-screen comments by filmmakers and Gal Gadot herself assign an actual age to the character.
Ahead of the release of Wonder Woman 1984, Gal Gadot claimed that Diana was around 5000 years old. However,
the movie’s director, Patty Jenkins, estimated that Diana would be closer to 900 years of age in the DCEU. Though the latter should feasibly be seen as the more reliable estimate, it remains clear either way that Wonder Woman is one of the oldest movie superheroes in the genre.
6 Thor - Approximately 1500 Years Old First Appearance: Thor (2011) Close As one of the franchise’s founding Avengers, Thor’s MCU story has been one of the most substantial, especially as he’s the only character to have appeared in four solo movies. First introduced in the MCU’s Phase 1 in 2011’s Thor, the God of Thunder was established as possessing longevity far beyond normal humans. He has since played a major role in multiple MCU stories, offering an indication as to his precise age within the franchise.
In Avengers: Infinity War, Thor’s MCU age is revealed by the hero himself, as
he tells the Guardians of the Galaxy that he is 1500 years old. Though many consider this an approximate age, and others have estimated him to be closer to 1000, he’s still one of the oldest figures in the MCU. This makes him one of the superhero genre’s oldest heroes, thanks to his Asgardian physiology.
5 Hawkman - 3100 Years Old First Appearance: Black Adam (2022) Close One of the additions to the DCEU who debuted in Black Adam’s cast of supporting heroes was Hawkman. The hero has long been known as one of DC’s oldest characters, as he’s effectively immortal. A major aspect of Hawkman’s power set is that he is repeatedly reborn after death, each time retaining knowledge of his previous lives. This essentially makes him immortal, and it was established that this is also the case for the DCEU’s adaptation of the hero.
In the comics, Hawkman’s initial incarnation was as Prince Khufu Kha-Tarr, who was born during the reign of Ramesses II during the 19th dynasty of Ancient Egypt.
This would place his real-world age at around 3100 years old, considering his consciousness is passed from one life to the next. Though the DCEU didn’t establish his specific timeline, it is heavily implied to be the same origin story as the comics, cementing Hawkman as one of the franchise’s oldest characters.
4 Black Adam - 4650 Years Old First Appearance: Black Adam (2022) Close Though 2022’s Black Adam proved a somewhat disappointing and anticlimactic addition to the DCEU in many ways, it introduced the titular antihero to the franchise. Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam was chosen as the champion of his people by the Council of Wizards, and granted an array of superhuman powers. Among them is remarkable longevity, allowing him to become the DCEU’s oldest hero.
In the movie, Black Adam is shown to have been a fully grown man in 2600 BC, meaning that
he is thought to be around 4650 in the DCEU’s present-day timeline. Considering that the movie’s story establishes the titular character’s timeline as having begun so much earlier than that of other characters, it makes him the oldest in the franchise. Not only is Black Adam ancient by DCEU standards, but he’s one of the oldest heroes in the entire superhero movie genre.
3 Valkyrie - 5000+ Years Old First Appearance: Thor: Ragnarok (2017) Close 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok introduced many characters to the MCU, including one of the oldest Marvel movie villains. It also introduced the hero Valkyrie, an Asgardian living on Sakaar after her fellow Valkyries were killed by Hela. She has since gone on to play a role in multiple MCU stories, including Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Love and Thunder. As an Asgardian, Valkyrie possesses impressive longevity, and she’s actually much older than the likes of Thor or Loki.
It is established that Valkyrie’s allies were killed in battle with Hela, who is said to have been imprisoned for 5000 years. This means that
Valkyrie is at least 5000 years old in the MCU, though almost certainly considerably older. Although the franchise has yet to establish a specific age for the character, it’s clear from context that she’s one of the MCU’s oldest characters.
2 Odin - 5000+ Years Old First Appearance: Thor (2011) Close First introduced in 2011’s Thor, Odin played a considerable part in the MCU’s Infinity Saga as a supporting character to his son, the God of Thunder. Also known as the All-Father, Odin’s origin story was not specifically established within the MCU. One thing that is clear is that he was especially old when he died in Thor: Ragnarok, even by Asgardian standards.
Though an exact age is impossible to surmise, it can be confirmed that Odin was at least 5000 in the MCU. Having imprisoned Hela for 5000 years before his death, he was at least that old, but had also conquered the Nine Realms with his daughter beforehand.
It’s clear that Odin was in fact considerably older than 5000, and though an exact age can’t be confirmed, he is still one of the MCU’s oldest heroes.
1 The Eternals - Approximately 7000 Years Old First Appearance: Eternals (2021) Close Though 2021’s Eternals proved not to be one of the MCU’s most popular movies, it did firmly establish its titular heroes within the franchise’s timeline. The movie shows the heroes first arriving on Earth in 5000 BC, tasked with hunting the Deviants hiding on the planet. Their story spans millennia before reaching the MCU’s present day, with revelations about their creation confirming the specific age of the movie’s heroes.
The movie explains that the Eternals were created by Arishem to see through the Emergence, the birth of the Celestial Tiamut. This means they were effectively born immediately before their 5000 BC arrival on Earth, making them a little over 7000 years old within the MCU. Though they’re much younger than their comic book counterparts, the Eternals are still the oldest supehero movie heroes to appear in the movies of the
MCU, the
DCU, and beyond.
