I’m So Relieved 1 DCEU Hero Is Set To Return In The DC Universe In 2026 Based On The Newest Release Plan Comments
After the newest comments about the plans to take one DCEU superhero into the
DCU, I"m even more excited to see what 2026 holds for the new DC cinematic universe. 2025 marks a more formal move into the DC Universe release schedule, with Creature Commandos having provided a bloodthirsty welcome to the franchise between late 2024 and early 2025, and the Superman movie and Peacemaker season 2 set to further expand the new universe in some major ways this year. However, it seems that 2026 will be the year that much of the franchise gets fleshed out.
There are already a wide selection of DC Universe releases slated for 2026, set to shed light on what many of the most iconic DC characters of all time will look like and act like in this fresh world. However, some recent comments suggest there may be a new addition to this roster on the way that also serves the extra benefit of bringing one DCEU hero into the new cinematic age. Given everything we currently know about the DC Universe"s release schedule, I think the addition to this point of the timeline would be a very pertinent move indeed - especially given the other releases that would be taking place around it.
Xolo Maridueña's DCU Future Comments Set Up A 2026 Return For Blue Beetle Close In a 2025 interview with The Direct at the Saturn Awards, Jamie Reyes actor Xolo Maridueña provided an update on the Blue Beetle animated show - which was initially announced by Deadline in June 2024 - with the actor stating:
"We"re hitting hard this animated project, hoping to get this settled out this year to show everyone next year." This appears to set up a prospective 2026 release date for the Blue Beetle series, which could make sense if production on the project is to take place throughout 2025.
The Blue Beetle show releasing in 2026 would work both in terms of ensuring there is a gap between the DCEU Blue Beetle film - which released in 2023 - but that there isn"t so long between releases that the character returning in the new DC franchise feels actively weird because of how far into the DC Universe timeline things are. With Creature Commandos serving to effectively show how the DCU will be adapting DCEU characters and story aspects into its world as the DC Universe"s first release, it stands to reason that Blue Beetle should logically follow not long behind to bring the hero into the new cinematic era.
Similarly, this would align with the rest of the known upcoming DC Universe release dates, with many of the projects announced earliest like the Blue Beetle show currently scheduled for this time window. As Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow, the Clayface movie, and the Lanterns show are all set to release in 2026, the Blue Beetle show debuting at this point of time would help the DCEU hero be naturally incorporated into the early setup stages of the DC Universe and its efforts to flash out its world and those within it.
Why Blue Beetle's DC Universe Return Is Notable After His DCEU Movie Close While Xolo Maridueña"s Jamie Reyes is by no means the first DCEU character to be coming into the DC Universe - with Creature Commandos featuring the likes of Viola Davis" Amanda Waller, Steve Agee"s John Economos, and Sean Gunn"s Weasel in the DCU"s first release, and Peacemaker season 2 set to bring even more familiar faces back - the character is a significant addition to this roster for many reasons. First and foremost,
Blue Beetle is arguably the only DC hero going from the DCEU to DCU, with the other figures swapping over being antiheroes or not heroes at all.
Though this is interesting in and of itself, it"s also a concept that is especially relevant given the number of new heroes the DCU is setting up in its early days, suggesting Blue Beetle could either team up with other protagonists, or otherwise be adjusted to coexist alongside them in this new world. Since the DCEU movie featured very little in terms of even references to other DC heroes, this adjustment period seems like it should be pretty problem free, even if the nature of swapping a focal DCEU movie hero over to the DCU may at first seem jarring.
I'm Excited To See How The DC Universe Handles Bringing Blue Beetle Into Its World Close The Blue Beetle movie came at a weird in-between point of the superhero genre. Debuting right towards the end of the DCEU - but before the DC Universe proper - the movie suffered from seeming disconnected to the larger world despite the early news that Blue Beetle would be coming over to the DCU when the new era kicked off. This meant it felt like the character never got a proper chance at things, since his first story was wrapped in a lot of complicated real-world circumstances.
However,
the DC Universe can hopefully do justice to the character via the Blue Beetle show, which could hopefully build towards more future appearances, and for Reyes to be a part of an interconnected universe in a meaningful way. Since many of the hero"s coolest comic moments and stories build on his connections with other heroes - and build him up as a notable addition to DC"s heroes and teen heroes especially - the DCU blossoming could align with Blue Beetle getting the kind of story that comic fans arguably never dared to dream would be possible in a live-action movie franchise.
Blue Beetle"s most likely early DCU crossovers would be that of a Teen Titans project, or in the upcoming Booster Gold project, since previous Blue Beetle Ted Kord is close friends with Booster Gold in the comics, and Booster Gold also plays a notable part in some of Jamie Reyes" stories.
With the DC Universe going to efforts to set up figures who haven"t gotten as much attention in terms of adaptations - ensuring figures like Swamp Thing and Booster Gold get their own time in the spotlight along the film heavy hitters like Batman and Superman - I think the
DCU is theoretically a perfect opportunity for Blue Beetle to get his on-screen heyday going forward. That said, any big future plans have to start somewhere, meaning all of this potential only serves to underline the importance of the Blue Beetle
show that appears to be on the horizon.
