Mount Wundagore & Its Connection To The Darkhold & Scarlet Witch Explained

The world of witchcraft in the Marvel Cinematic Universe features several mentions of Mount Wundagore, a location vital to the journey of the Scarlet Witch and the Darkhold. The Darkhold was most recently mentioned as an Easter egg in Agatha All Along, the MCU"s latest Disney+ show. The show is the most recent entry in the MCU, and also the most recent to focus on witchcraft, a reality that is evident by the time of Agatha All Along episode 2"s ending.
The show not only introduces new MCU locations like the Witches" Road, but it delves much deeper into the concepts of witchcraft only hinted at in prior projects like WandaVision. With such a focus being placed on witches, there are natural references to Wanda Maximoff and what became of the Scarlet Witch in the MCU. Interestingly, the Scarlet Witch"s fate was tied directly to the Darkhold, as well as a mystical MCU location called Mount Wundagore.
Mount Wundagore's Darkhold Connection Explained The Darkhold Belongs To Mount Wundagore's Castle The primary purpose of Mount Wundagore in the MCU is connected to the Darkhold itself, as revealed in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In this film, Mount Wundagore is visited by the central characters. Specifically, it is the Darkhold Castle atop Mount Wundagore that is visited, providing a very clear connection between the giant structure and the Book of the Damned.

In Doctor Strange 2, it is revealed that the Darkhold was written at Mount Wundagore. The dark wizard known as Chthon wrote the Darkhold at Mount Wundagore and constructed a castle around it, becoming the Darkhold Castle. While Chthon"s past is mostly unclear in the MCU, his actions tie directly into the story of Wanda Maximoff, as is highlighted in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
How Scarlet Witch Is Connected To Mount Wundagore Scarlet Witch's Past & Present Links To Mount Wundagore Close As alluded to, the Scarlet Witch connects heavily to Mount Wundagore. Originally, the Darkhold was formed of spells constructed by Chthon and his worshippers. However, the book and the castle it belongs to were primarily created due to the prophecy of the Scarlet Witch. In the MCU, Chthon prophecies that a being of immeasurable chaos magic power would destroy the world: the Scarlet Witch. The Darkhold was written to house this prophecy and other dark spells, with the castle around it protecting the book, adorned with sculptures of the Scarlet Witch.
Related How Fulfilling Scarlet Witch’s Multiverse Prophecy Can Fix The MCU’s Future Wanda Maximoff has yet to fulfill the Scarlet Witch prophecy, which may still have a major impact on the MCU"s future after the Multiverse Saga.
As such, Wanda Maximoff connects heavily to Mount Wundagore as it is the place where the book dedicated to her prophecy was created. In Doctor Strange 2, Wanda"s connection to Mount Wundagore was made even stronger. After realizing the error of her ways due to the corruption of the Darkhold, Wanda destroyed the castle and Mount Wundagore, bringing the structure down on top of her. Mount Wundagore is where the Scarlet Witch died in the MCU, as well as where she destroyed every multiversal copy of the Darkhold.
The Significance Of Mount Wundagore Being In Eastern Europe Explained Mount Wundagore's Location Is No Accident Another element that makes Mount Wundagore important in the MCU is its location. For the most part, the MCU"s Infinity Saga timeline did not take place outside of the United States. However, one of the more significant projects that was set on another continent was Avengers: Age of Ultron, a film that introduced the country of Sokovia. Sokovia was introduced as the home country of Wanda and Pietro Maximoff and is a fictional country that is said to be located in Eastern Europe.
In Doctor Strange 2, it is explained that Mount Wundagore is also located in Eastern Europe. This certainly makes sense, as it provides another connection between Wanda and Wundagore. Considering that Wanda was always prophesied to become the Scarlet Witch, it makes sense that this prophecy will first be felt in a location close to Sokovia by Chthon. This also tracks with Marvel Comics, in which Scarlet Witch is also from Sokovia and has a connection to Mount Wundagore.
How Scarlet Witch Destroyed The Darkhold Explained Scarlet Witch Eventually Broke Free Of The Darkhold's Control In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" ending, Scarlet Witch used the Darkhold"s power contained within Wundagore to dreamwalk into another universe. There, she encountered her children, Billy and Tommy Maximoff. However, the children were terrified of her, proving that Scarlet Witch had become a monster twisted by the Darkhold in her quest to retrieve her children whom she lost in WandaVision"s climactic ending. This shook Wanda out of her rage and caused her to return to Mount Wundagore and the Darkhold in the MCU"s main timeline.

Realizing that a great deal of her crimes stemmed from the influence of the Darkhold, Wanda uses her powers to destroy the book. Wanda is incredibly powerful with chaos magic, a form of power that stretches across the multiverse. As a result, the Darkhold was destroyed in every single reality across the MCU multiverse. However, Wanda"s guilt also saw her bring down Mount Wundagore around her, seemingly killing the Scarlet Witch for good.
How Mount Wundagore Connects To Agatha All Along Agatha All Along Includes Fun Mount Wundagore Easter Eggs Close As alluded to, Agatha All Along"s cast of characters is versed in the MCU"s world of witchcraft, meaning the show has some connections to Mount Wundagore. One of these connections comes in Agatha All Along episode 1, in which Agatha is still trapped in a WandaVision-like spell. Agatha sees herself as a detective, investigating the murder of an unknown woman. It is later revealed that this woman is the Scarlet Witch, as Agatha breaks free of the spell.
The dead body of Wanda also has black fingertips, a common visual cue in the MCU for those who have been corrupted by the Darkhold"s power.
One of the clues toward Scarlet Witch"s death is a library book: Dialogue and Rhetoric: Known History of Learning and Debate by one Andrew Ugo. This book is an acronym for Darkhold, while the author, Andrew Ugo, is an anagram of Wundagore. Similarly, the dead body of Scarlet Witch is said to have been crushed by something heavy, a nod to the remnants of Mount Wundagore that killed Wanda in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Finally, Agatha All Along connects to Mount Wundagore by hinting that the events that took place there may not be lasting. Another police officer in Agatha"s spell-infused world, Herb from WandaVision, insists that the person is certainly dead. Agatha replies with "You never know," linking to the theory that Wanda is still alive somehow. This would have big repercussions for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and could even hint at the future involvement of Mount Wundagore under the Scarlet Witch"s control.
