10 Perfect DC Superhero Casting Choices The DC Universe Could Finally Make Reality

The upcoming DC Universe is a valuable chance to make some of the longest-standing fan wishes for castings of popular characters finally come true. Headed by James Gunn, the upcoming DC Universe is Warner Brothers" latest attempt at establishing a cinematic universe comprised of the greatest stories from DC Comics. With so many important DC characters still remaining uncast in the universe, there are plenty of opportunities to make some historic dreams for fancasts a reality.
While many big-name characters in the DCU have already been cast, such as David Corenswet"s Superman or Mily Alcock"s Supergirl, a startling majority of popular comic book characters have yet to be given an actor. Already, the franchise has proven itself to be more than willing to listen to fan demand for its castings, such as the recent announcement of Jason Momoa as Lobo. This is a hopeful prospect for many exciting ideas for the future of the franchise.
10 Jensen Ackles As Batman From Supernatural to superhero Perhaps the biggest open question still remaining for the cast of the DCU is who will play Batman. Many actors have played the Caped Crusader over the years to varying degrees of success, and Batman will most likely be the single most crucial casting decision for the entire franchise. Now, James Gunn has the chance to make a popular fancast for the character for years, Jensen Ackles, a reality.
Jensen Ackles is best known for his time as Dean Winchester in the hit series Supernatural, where his cocky attitude won over legions of viewers. Yet Ackles already has plenty of superhero experience, playing Soldier Boy in The Boys and even already voicing Batman in various animated DC films. With a proven track record in action fantasy franchises and a developed voice for Bruce Wayne and Batman, Jensen Ackles is one of the most no-brainer decisions when it comes to the question of Batman"s actor.
9 Harry Goodwins As Green Arrow Perfect for the first cinematic Emerald Archer One DC hero who hasn"t gotten the love he deserves in filmmaking is the franchise"s own resident superhero archer, Green Arrow. Though the series Arrow was the basis for an entire live-action DC universe on TV, Green Arrow has never gotten a solo live-action film or even an appearance as a supporting character in a different DC property. Ideally, the DCU will be able to change this with a striking live-action Green Arrow.
Actor Harry Goodwins has long campaigned to be cast as Oliver Queen, a.k.a. Green Arrow. With a history in films like Angels vs Bullies and The Gentlemen, Goodwins has the perfect look for the character, sporting the same signature blonde facial hair the comic hero is famous for. The DCU has already proven it"s willing to concede to actors" own desires to play certain characters, as with Jason Momoa"s Lobo, meaning that Goodwins casting as Green Arrow is more likely than not.
8 Drake Rodger As Nightwing The natural evolution of the Boy Wonder Another actor who has publicly campaigned to play a niche DC character is Drake Rodger. Also an alum of Supernatural, Drake Rodger is known for his portrayal of the young John Winchester in spin-off series The Winchesters. Rodger has publicly supporting fan art portraying him as the hero Nightwing, who the original Robin, Dick Grayson, grows up to become. In pursuit of the role, Rodger has even practiced using escrima sticks, the signature weapon of the Gotham City vigilante, openly hoping for a DCU audition.
The upcoming Dynamic Duo movie will feature both Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, better known as the resurrected killer Red Hood, both former Robins. It would make sense for Dick Grayson to evolve into Nightwing sooner in the DCU rather than later considering how many Robins will be running around and the fact that Batman is poised to be an older and more experienced hero, perhaps already with a history of sidekicks. This film is easily Drake Rodger"s best chance at finally fulfilling his superhero casting dreams.
7 Aidan Gallagher As Robin Specifically, Damien Wayne Yet another Robin poised to join the DCU is Damien Wayne, Batman"s actual biological son. The most recently-introduced version of the Boy Wonder in the DC Comics, Damien Wayne is the child of Batman and Talia al Ghul, a deadly assassin and the daughter of villain Ra"s al Ghul. Due to his upbringing, Damien Wayne is typically portrayed as more cold and callous compared to other heroes, a fact that will surely come into consideration when it comes to his casting.
In that regard, Aidan Gallagher would be the perfect choice for a cinematic Damien Wayne Robin. Gallagher wowed TV audiences with his portrayal of Five in the Netflix superhero series The Umbrella Academy, in which he played a former child superhero in his 50s still trapped in his adolescent body. This old-beyond-his-years character and vitriolic disregard for most human life would translate amazingly to Damien Wayne, making him one of the only young actors suited for the role.
6 May Calamawy As Wonder Woman The next of the big three As the final member of DC"s "big three" consisting of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, Diana Prince is another critical casting choice for the DCU to get right. Gal Gadot was the last person to play Wonder Woman in the movies, and was frequently criticized for her stiff acting skills. That only makes the DCU"s choice for such an important character all the more crucial to its eventual success.
One name that has frequently come up in the conversation for the next Wonder Woman is May Calamawy. Calamawy is an Egyptian-Palestinian actress who has distinguished herself in the sword-and-sandal genre Wonder Woman thrives in, playing Macrinus"s companion in Gladiator II. More importantly, she also came into her own as a superhero once before, as Scarlet Scarab in the MCU"s Moon Knight, proving she can handle herself in a comic book world.
5 Jack Quaid As The Flash Has the quick wit to keep up with the role The Flash is another major member of the Justice League the DCU will eventually need to find a home for. Ezra Miller"s quirky, neurotic, and deeply millennial take on the character is a great blueprint for what to avoid going in, giving the franchise a plethora of options to choose from for Barry Allen or even Wally West. In either case, Jack Quaid is one name that continuously comes up in fan circles when it comes to who should be the next Scarlet Speedster.
Jack Quaid has the comedic timing necessary to make The Flash"s quick-witted and sly personality work while still being able to get serious when the situation calls for it. Already a staple of comic book storytelling thanks to his time in The Boys as Hughie, it would be hilarious to see Quaid go from the victim of a speedster to a super-fast hero himself. The recent release Novocaine more than proves that Quaid can handle himself in big-budget action-packed blockbusters.
4 Alan Ritchson As Batman A more imposing, modern look for the character Batman has multiple actors championed for his next appearance, with Alan Ritchson being another recurring name. Alan Ritchson is the star of Amazon"s Reacher, where his massive muscular frame and 6"3" height did justice to the classic literary character after the total miscast of the Tom Cruise movie. Beyond his physicality, Ritchson"s calm but assured demeanor goes a long way to quietly carrying the series as one of the platform"s most popular.
Ritchson might be a particularly great choice for the DCU"s version of Batman in particular. Batman"s brief animated cameo in Creature Commandos suggests a stockier, more burly, and perhaps more grizzled Dark Knight who might benefit from Ritchson"s portrayal in live-action. This could also capitalize on the massively popular Absolute Batman series currently published by DC, in which Batman is a hulking figure evoking Ritchson"s frame.
3 Patrick Wilson As Aquaman Was so close to already doing so in the DCU One fascinating case for a popular fan-cast in the upcoming DCU is Patrick Wilson as Aquaman. Patrick Wilson has become a well-known actor for his appearances in films like the Conjuring films or Michael Keaton"s The Founder, but his most relevant work for the discussion is obviously his work in the DCEU. In the previous cinematic interpretation of the DC universe, Patrick Wilson played Orm, also known as Ocean Master, Aquaman"s half-brother and scheming tyrannical nemesis.
As the Aquaman of the DCEU, Jason Momoa had actually expressed surprise that he had gotten the role over Wilson, considering Wilson would have been dead-on as a more classic version of the character. Indeed, Patrick Wilson has a better look for a stately, more mythical Aquaman with the acting skills to boot, and truly should have been the one playing the seafaring hero from the start. It would be interesting to see the DCU rectify this near-miss by giving Wilson a chance to be Aquaman now that his former co-star has gotten his dream role.
2 Ana De Armas As Catwoman The essence of femme fatale Crucial to almost any Batman universe is Catwoman, one of Batman"s less overtly evil villains who usually ends up working with or even falling in love with the Caped Crusader. Plenty of actresses have already played Catwoman, with each bringing their own unique spin on Selina Kyle. When it comes to the next modern name to attribute to the feline femme fatale, Ana de Armas is the obvious choice.
Ana de Armas has made her way through multiple big-name blockbusters in recent memory, including No Time to Die, Blade Runner 2049, and Knives Out. She"s repeatedly demonstrated an ability to play seductive yet dangerous characters who conceal their true intentions, making her a shoo-in for a character like Catwoman who plays with a fast and loose morality. Pepper in her impressive handling of kinetic action scenes, and it would be hard to justify not casting her for the DCU"s conceivable future.
1 Ben Schwartz As Plastic Man Ooey, gooey, and hilarious above all else Casting actors who already have a pedigree with big-name franchises is always a good idea for any cinematic universe, and the DCU would do well to incorporate Ben Schwartz in pursuit of this. Schwartz has done big numbers as the voice of everyone"s favorite blue hedgehog in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, which has managed to clear an absurd box office take. Beyond that, his acumen in live-action projects like Parks and Recreation and Renfield more than qualify him for a non-CGI character.
To go somewhere in between, Plastic Man would be absolutely perfect for Schwartz"s comedy chops. The elastic former-criminal-turned-hero is one DC character audiences have never seen but would instantly love, with cartoony superpowers and a hilariously irreverent personality that finds crass humor and child-like joy in being a superhero. Owing to the more absurd and comic book-y tone of the DCU, Ben Schwartz deserves the chance to bring Plastic Man to life.
