Ironheart Finally Has a Nemesis Worthy of the MCU

Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for Ironheart: Bad Chemistry #1!Marvel Comics is finally leveling up a new Ironheart villain, giving Riri Williams the perfect nemesis for both her comic adventures and her future in the MCU. The film franchise often pits its heroes against villains who serve as dark reflections of the protagonist and their powers, and Ironheart’s new one-shot is set to introduce a character who appears capable of matching Riri’s tech expertise.

Marvel’s preview for Ironheart: Bad Chemistry #1–written by John Jennings, with art by Jethro Morales–sees Riri struggle to keep up on a high-flying chase against the relatively new villain, Khem. Manipulating matter and even her own molecular structure, Khem proves to be a seriously powerful threat against Ironheart.
Close Khem can somehow glide through the sky, teleport, and even turn air into granite. Riri may be a teenage tech genius with extraordinary gadgets, but it seems she might have met her match with this mysterious villain, whose origins could be tied to somebody from Iron Man’s past.

Khem has only appeared once before, debuting in the Free Comic Book Day 2023: Marvel’s Voices special, in a story by the upcoming one-shot’s writer, Jennings, and artist Paris Alleyne. The said story was also titled Bad Chemistry, and the new one-shot will flesh out Riri’s new rival. Their updated face-off will help establish Khem’s place in the Marvel Universe and her role as the ultimate Ironheart adversary.

While a villain like Khem would be an excellent fit for the MCU, Riri still has other formidable foes she needs a rematch with. She also has ties to the Mandarin’s rings, and Ironheart #11 by Eve L. Ewing and Luciano Vecchio even revealed her father’s origin as a super-powered member of the villainous Ten Rings organization, known as Dune.

With Ironheart’s show taking this direction, it’s possible that her comic adventures could soon be written to match the Disney+ series, taking Riri out of the science world with Khem and into Marvel’s realm of magic and mysticism.
Even with a detour into battling demons and the devil, Riri Williams deserves a villain who can truly match and challenge her genius. Khem, with her mysterious connection to another Iron Man villain, seems poised to become Riri’s true nemesis—a sinister reflection of her own superhero identity. As Marvel’s new one-shot gives Ironheart a rematch against one of her most powerful and intriguing villains, Khem has the potential to make a lasting impact in the comics and prove she’s ready to level up to major supervillain status.
