10 Major MCU Characters We Are Afraid Could Die In Avengers 5’s Massive Roster

Summary
  • Avengers 5 is reported to feature over 60 returning MCU characters.
  • Major players of the franchise might be at risk of dying in Avengers 5.
  • Characters like Hank Pym, Thor, and Nick Fury could make for key deaths in the MCU film.
Avengers 5 will bring several Marvel Cinematic Universe characters back, and that could lead to a franchise trend of killing major players. Since the end of the Infinity Saga, the MCU has not released a single film for Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The Avengers have not even appeared in another project, like Steve Rogers' team at the start of Captain America: Civil War. That is because Marvel has confirmed the Avengers are inactive in the MCU.
The reveal came a few months ago at CinemaCon, with exclusive Captain America: Brave New World footage shown at the event featuring Thunderbolt Ross asking Sam Wilson to assemble a new Avengers team. It has been reported that Avengers 5 will include over 60 returning MCU characters. Since major players have died in every Avengers movie, that large cast could lead to a continuation of the franchise's trend, with some heroes having the risk of dying in Avengers 5.

10 Hank Pym Story And Personal Reasons Could Seal His Fate Close At the moment, Marvel has not made any official announcement on Kang the Conqueror's MCU fate. After star Jonathan Majors was fired, the character and the Council of Kangs could either be recast or scrapped. In case the MCU continues with its plans, then Hank Pym would be at the top of the list of most likely characters to die in Avengers 5. That is because of two factors, with the first coming from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Kang's backstory in the movie was tied to Janet van Dyne. After she betrayed him, the villain was stuck in the Quantum Realm. Kang could kill Hank to get his revenge on Janet for stranding him. Adding to that, MCU Hank Pym actor Michael Douglas wants his character to die. Asked about returning as Hank Pym, Douglas said, "As long as I could die."

9 Thor The MCU Hero With The Most Solo Movies Close While Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4 does not arrive, Chris Hemsworth's Thor stands as the MCU hero with the most solo movies, having four and with a possible fifth entry in the future. After Thor: Love and Thunder, the God of Thunder could have a couple more adventures in the MCU before calling it a day. Thor has had major tonal shifts throughout his MCU arc.
After an emotional arc, the character has found happiness once again by the end of Thor: Love and Thunder. Aside from raising the young Love, Thor only has to meet back up with his brother, Tom Hiddleston's Loki, before being ready to bow out of the MCU. As one of the original Avengers, it would make sense for him to be Avengers 5's shocking death, setting the stage for an even more urgent Avengers: Secret Wars.
Related Thor 5: Story, Setting, Cast, & Everything We Know Taika Waititi"s Thor: Love & Thunder seems to set up an antagonist for Thor 5, but details about the potential MCU sequel remain unconfirmed.
8 Ant-Man Kang Could Make His Comeback Close If Marvel Studios maintains its plans for Kang the Conqueror to be the main villain of the MCU's Multiverse Saga, then Paul Rudd's Ant-Man is one of the heroes facing the biggest risk of dying in Avengers 5. The reason for that is simple: Ant-Man already handed Kang a major defeat. In Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Ant-Man and his family foiled Kang's plans, with the villain seemingly dying after a fight with Scott and his Multiversal Engine Core breaking down.
Kang the Conqueror was never going to die in his first MCU appearance. In the comics, the character once fought the Avengers and retreated to the past to live under a fake name as he planned his next move. Kang could similarly come back in Avengers 5 as an even bigger threat, killing Scott for what he did to him.
Related The MCU Phase 5's First Bomb Is Still Perfect For A Sequel Amid Disney's New Release Strategy Amidst rumors that Disney is not moving forward with several Marvel sequels, there is still one that they should make despite a recent failure.
7 Hulk A Truly Shocking Death Close The MCU still has three of the original Avengers active. While Hawkeye and Thor's stories are pretty much wrapped up, the Hulk could go on for the next decade. It helps that Mark Ruffalo does not need to bulk up to play Bruce Banner, doing motion-capture work for his Hulk. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law's ending saw the Hulk's son get introduced in the MCU, with Skaar showing up alongside his dad at a family lunch.
Since The Incredible Hulk will likely remain the only solo movie for the hero in the MCU due to Hulk's complicated film rights, the character's story plays out across different movies. As such, it is expected that Hulk's son, Skaar, will play a role alongside him in Avengers 5. With the character still having a long potential in the franchise, Hulk's death in Avengers 5 would be completely unexpected, and as he is one of the strongest Avengers, it could spell doom for the team.

6 The Wasp A Recent Update Makes Her Death Likely Close There is a reason why so many Ant-Man family characters are on the list. Like Hank Pym and Scott Lang, the Wasp could be another character who Kang kills in his pursuit of revenge after being beaten in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. As Janet van Dyne's only daughter, Kang killing Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne would hit even harder for Michelle Pfeiffer's Janet than if Kang killed Hank Pym.
Hope is also directly responsible for Kang's defeat, as the Wasp showed up to help Ant-Man in his final fight with Kang. Adding to the character's chances of dying is the fact that the Wasp actress Evangeline Lilly is stepping away from acting. Recently, the star announced her surprising decision, saying, "I might return to Hollywood one day, but, for now, this is where I belong." The Wasp could potentially be killed off by Kang while in costume at the start of the movie, setting up high stakes for Avengers 5.

5 Hawkeye The Avenger's Replacement Is Ready Close Closing out the original MCU Avengers on the list is Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye. The character's story in the franchise is pretty much over. Clint Barton had both his professional life as a hero and his private life with his family explored in the MCU. After Renner led Disney+'s Hawkeye series, finally getting a solo project years after debuting, Hawkeye seems set to bow out of the shared universe in the coming years. That could come as a sacrifice.
Clint Barton is a selfless hero. He is also one of the weakest Avengers, not possessing any powers. That could very well lead to his death when fighting the Council of Kangs or other powerful villains in Avengers 5. With Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop now trained as a hero to become the MCU's new Hawkeye, Clint could sacrifice himself to save her life, setting up a new emotional arc for Steinfeld's Kate Bishop to try to live up to Hawkeye's legacy.

4 Bucky Barnes The Character's Death Seems To Have Been Postponed Close Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes is one of the MCU's longest-running characters. From hero to villain to hero again, Bucky has been through it all. It is no surprise that he has become one of the most beloved characters in the MCU, with many fans sad that Sam Wilson was chosen as the next Captain America instead of him. After more than a decade, with Bucky making amends for his time as the Winter Soldier, his MCU ending could come soon.
It might even have happened in 2025. Stan's next time as Bucky Barnes will be in next year's Thunderbolts*. Recently, a Thunderbolts* plot report claimed that an early version of the movie's script saw the new team die while on a mission. Based on Bucky's long MCU tenure and the fact he could have died in 2025, the character makes for a poignant possible death in Avengers 5.

3 Wong A Constant MCU Presence Close There are a couple of factors that could spell doom for Wong in Avengers 5. Given how every Avengers movie has had at least one major death and the upcoming film will be the team's first in the Multiverse Saga, Marvel could pull out a page from 2012's The Avengers. In that movie, Phil Coulson, a character who appeared in multiple MCU projects, was the death that brought the team together.
Wong could fit that role in Avengers 5. Besides his personal bond with Doctor Strange, Wong has teamed up with the Avengers in the team's last two movies and recently met other heroes like Shang-Chi, She-Hulk, and more. Adding to that, Wong is currently the MCU's Sorcerer Supreme, and the character's death would lead to Doctor Strange having his title back, which seems inevitable.

2 Shuri Another Black Panther Could Rise Close Shuri would make for another major death in Avengers 5. Following Chadwick Boseman's passing, Shuri took over for T'Challa in the MCU as the new Black Panther. Letitia Wright delivered her best MCU performance yet as Shuri in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, cementing Shuri as the new version of the hero. However, the end of the movie introduces T'Challa's son, Toussaint, teasing that he could become Black Panther in the future.
In the years since Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a movement for T'Challa's recasting has grown. Shuri could have a heroic death in Avengers 5, opening up the door for a new version of T'Challa to enter the MCU in Avengers: Secret Wars or the inevitable Black Panther 3. That could come with Toussaint being aged up due to time travel — not uncommon in Avengers movies — or a T'Challa variant from the multiverse appearing.
Related Black Panther 3: Everything We Know Black Panther: Wakanda Forever sets up several plot threads for Black Panther 3, but no official announcement has been made by Marvel Studios so far.
1 Nick Fury The Creator Of The Avengers Close Finally, Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury is a character whose death would make a lot of sense for Avengers 5. Like Wong, Fury's death could serve to unite the MCU heroes, especially the old guard. At 75, Jackson is limited in how much he can do as Nick Fury, so going out with a bang instead of fading into the franchise's background might be the best option for the character.
Related 1 Year On, I'm Still Not Over How Badly The MCU Messed Up Its Lowest Rated Show Now that one year has passed since the release of the MCU"s lowest-rated series, I can say that I"m still not over how much it disappointed me.
Adding to it, last year, Fury got his first lead role in the MCU. Secret Invasion has become one of the MCU's lowest-rated projects, with the series proving itself a mostly dull affair. After more of Fury's personal life was explored there, with two of his closest friends dying in the series, Nick Fury's MCU journey is all but over. An Avengers 5 death could be seen as his grand finale.
Avengers 5 Avengers 5 is the fifth Avengers film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will bring together heroes, new and old, to face off against the omnipotent Kang the Conquerer. Avengers 5 will also mark the beginning of phase 6 of the MCU.
