Kevin Feige opens up on the return of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in Deadpool & Wolverine and how the Marvel Cinematic Universe moves The Multiverse Saga forward. Despite only having one Marvel movie releasing in 2024 from Marvel Studios, Phase 5 is about to take several steps forward with The Multiverse Saga. To wrap up the Deadpool trilogy, Reynolds and Jackman are joining forces as the titular leads in Deadpool & Wolverine, marking the beginning of a major era for the franchise.
Deadpool & Wolverine serves not just as Wade's move to the MCU timeline but also as a semi-farewell to the X-Men movie universe that began at 20th Century Fox more than two decades ago. With Jackman portraying a new Wolverine variant, Deadpool will soon come to terms with what the multiverse really is about and the danger that it is facing. As Deadpool & Wolverine still has plenty of surprises left in store for the audience, the film is said to be a major game-changer for the overall MCU.

3 Screen Rant recently interviewed Feige to speak more about Deadpool & Wolverine and the impact it will have on the MCU. Feige reflected on his long-time dynamic with Jackman from the original X-Men movies to his MCU debut, teasing what may be in store for the MCU in other corners of the franchise, both on the big and small screens.
Kevin Feige Previews Deadpool & Wolverine And The Future Of The MCU Close Screen Rant: You originally told Hugh not to come back as Wolverine because the ending to Logan was so good. Does this film solve that problem, and how did you react when you first read the story for this film?
Kevin Feige: I had said that to Hugh many years ago, soon after he had nailed that landing on Logan, and while we at Marvel Studios were in the midst of attempting to stick our own landing with Avengers: Endgame, and I had said, 'You did it. Why rush back into something?' To his credit, he didn't. Years and years and years went by, and we started working on Deadpool with Ryan and Shawn, and a lot of great ideas came up and a ton of great scenes and storylines, which are in the final movie, but it was missing something.
The reason for being other than - people like Deadpool, [let's] make another Deadpool movie - It has to be more than that and when Hugh called, that's when it worked, that's when it became, and by that point, we were in our Multiverse Saga. We had access to fun things like the Time Variance Authority, and we could do both. We could maintain the legacy of Logan in a somewhat respectful way and bring Hugh as another incarnation.
The MCU Adapts To Deadpool, Not The Other Way Around Custom Image by Kai Young People have been wondering how Deadpool would adapt to Marvel, but the trailers kind of prove that it's really Marvel that needs to adapt to Deadpool. What's been your favorite part of this process?
Kevin Feige: The favorite part of the process is working with Shawn, Ryan, and Hugh, but seeing what seems like off-the-cuff chaos of Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool is actually an incredibly well-thought-out, meticulously planned, hard-earned plotting and development. It's really, really impressive and Hugh sort of said this today in a press conference that Ryan plays Deadpool, of course, and Deadpool is the co-lead character in this movie. But because he's also a producer and also a co-writer, he cares about all the other characters and the storyline and really improves. Hugh said it better than I would that it's a generosity to make, not just Deadpool cool, but the entire movie and all the characters in it.
Hugh Jackman's Secret Super Power Custom Image by Yailin Chacon It's wild to think that Hugh's been playing this role for over 20 years because back when he was playing this role, it was a completely different time. But he looks exactly the same, essentially. Do you think that you'd want, as long as he wants to play Wolverine, to have him around?
Kevin Feige: He's as great a pairing of an actor and a character there's ever been, and by the way, you are totally right. If you were to look at a photo, which I don't recommend of he and I on the set of the original X-Men, you'd go, 'Hey, that cool! There's Hugh. who's that guy?' I've aged! Hugh has aged maybe half a day.
A Future For Gambit In The MCU After X-Men '97 Custom Image by Yailin Chacon Switching gears for a second, I got to ask, after the success of X-Men '97, can you heal our hearts and let us know that Gambit is in a future live action something?
Kevin Feige: I can't! [laughs] But I'm glad that you were so touched.
Is Kang Out Of The Multiverse Saga? I want to ask this because one of the upcoming Avengers titles was The Kang Dynasty, is Kang still a villain in an Avengers film?
Kevin Feige: I've done a number of interviews in the last couple of days, and you're the first person to, I give you credit for just outright asking the question and I'll give myself credit for trying to invade it and avoid it entirely.
Will Shawn Levy Return For More MCU Projects? Custom image by Andy Behbakht Working with Shawn, first of all, does a great job of finding the humanity in any story he tells. I think he's one of the best directors out there. Working with him, have you guys already started talking about working on other projects, and would you like to see him return to the MCU?
Kevin Feige: Whenever you have an experience with a filmmaker that, during development, is great, during production is great, during post-production is great, and then the resulting movie is great. Yes, you want to find what you can do together next, and that was certainly the case with Shawn.
The Biggest Challenge Of The MCU Facing The X-Men Now, from your perspective as a creative, what's the biggest and most exciting challenge facing the X-Men in the MCU?
Kevin Feige: Well, the most exciting challenge is delving even deeper into the mythology of the comics and into the deep bench of mutant characters. I think we've seen a lot of great characters in the X-Men movies that have existed up to now, but there are literally hundreds that we haven't seen yet. And you've already referenced X-Men 97. For me, that was, and the animation team of Marvel Studios did such a spectacular job with that and seeing the audience respond to the soap opera elements and to the love triangles and to all that that really makes the X-Men the X-Men. It had all of us very excited about the translation back into live action.
X-Men '97's Anchor Being (You'll Understand When You Watch) Custom image by Andy Behbakht Have we met the anchor [being] in X-Men '97?
Kevin Feige: No, but I love you are the third person to ask me about anchor beings and that term, and people like you guys who've only seen the first 37 minutes. But when people see the whole movie, how that term has taken hold in people's imaginations is exciting.
The Return Of Hugh Jackman As Wolverine Custom image by Andy Behbakht From other projects, I want to ask about Hugh for a second. Considering how long he's played Wolverine, is there anything new he was able to unlock in this version of Deadpool & Wolverine?
Kevin Feige: I think there was very much, and I'm sure you'll talk to him about it because he's much more articulate than I'm about it. But he said there were a lot of things, certainly on the surface level, it's the yellow costume. and you have a cool Wolverine mask on your T-shirt that we haven't seen before in movies. That's cool to see.
But of course, on a deeper level, I think he has said that he taps into a darker element of the character, which is not necessarily apparent in the fun footage that you've seen in trailers. But when you see the movie, there's a darkness that always comes with the Wolverine character from the comics that is touched on in certain of the previous movies but is delved into in this one in a way that really takes you to, I think, a special place and showcases yet again. What a spectacular actor.
Which Nova Is Joining The MCU Custom image by Andy Behbakht Any updates on Nova, and are you a Richard Ryder guy or a Sam Alexander guy?
Kevin Feige: I like them both. It is Richard Ryder. That has been the primary focus of [the] Nova development as we continue to move towards that.
About Deadpool & Wolverine Your browser does not support the video tag. Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date—"Deadpool & Wolverine." A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier… reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to—F--k. Synopses are so f-----g stupid.
