Why Sam Jones III"s Pete Ross Left After Smallville Season 3

Summary
  • Pete Ross, an important character from Smallville, was written out after season 3 seemingly due to story reasons.
  • Sam Jones III, who played Pete Ross, states he found out he was leaving the show abruptly before a convention appearance, creating a difficult experience.
  • Pete Ross's return in season 7 was a disappointment to many fans, as his story did not align with his development earlier seasons.
Pete Ross was a beloved character in the early seasons of Smallville before suddenly leaving the series. Played by Sam Jones III, the DC Universe character was drawn from the Superboy comic books all the way back to 1961, where he played the role of one of Clark Kent's childhood best friends. With the character pulled directly from the comics and with stories centered around his experience of discovering Clark Kent is Superman yet to be told, there seemed to be much left for Pete Ross to do in Smallville.
Unfortunately, changes to the Smallville cast seemed to occur rapidly, and with several notable figures. Laura Vandervoort appeared in only one Smallville season and much of her story did not even have the time to wrap up. The Smallville showrunners seemed to be constantly adjusting the series, and many new characters were added and quickly removed. Pete Ross was, unfortunately, one of these casting casualties.
