Thanos" Worst MCU Kill Is Even Sadder Than You Think According To Devastating Infinity War Theory
Summary
- Avengers: Infinity War brought the Red Skull back to the MCU after the villain was last seen in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger.
- The Red Skull named Vormir's visitors' parents in Infinity War and Endgame, but curiously named Thanos as the father of Gamora.
- Gamora and Black Widow's similarities, but different views on family, make both their sacrifices in the MCU's Phase 3 more heartbreaking.
One of the most heartbreaking deaths in
Avengers: Infinity War may be even more devastating, according to a new MCU theory. Avengers: Infinity War marked the culmination of a decade of storytelling in the MCU, as almost all of Marvel Studios' heroes banded together to try and stop the Mad Titan, Thanos, from collecting the six Infinity Stones. Unfortunately, the Avengers weren't successful, as Thanos claimed all the Infinity Stones and wiped out half the population of the universe. These losses were reversed in Avengers: Endgame, but Avengers: Infinity War also marked the permanent deaths of several beloved MCU heroes.
Avengers: Infinity War may have ended in tragedy, but Thanos' journey to collect the six Infinity Stones was the core focus of the epic crossover event. Thanos collected the Power Stone from Xandar, the Space Stone from the Asgardians, the Reality Stone from Knowhere, the Time Stone from Doctor Strange and the Mind Stone from Vision, but his mission for the Soul Stone was more mysterious.
Thanos brought his adoptive daughter, Gamora, with him to obtain the Soul Stone, which proved to be crucial, as a returning MCU villain revealed Thanos had to sacrifice his daughter to retrieve the gem.

Related Red Skull’s Infinity War Mystery Answered In Far-Reaching Asgardian MCU Theory A new far-reaching MCU theory answers questions about the Infinity Stones' origins, the MCU's Celestials, and the Red Skull's mysterious mission. Red Skull's Family Naming Scenes Make Gamora's Death Even More Awful Close Thanos and Gamora's mission to Vormir in Avengers: Infinity War saw the Red Skull return to the MCU. The Red Skull was last seen in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, and Infinity War revealed that holding the Tesseract sent the Red Skull to Vormir, where he was destined to stand guard over the Soul Stone.
The Red Skull proved his wisdom immediately upon Thanos and Gamora's arrival on Vormir, as he named Thanos as the son of Alars, and Gamora as the daughter of Thanos. However, this carries a much deeper meaning that makes Gamora's demise much more heartbreaking.
While the Red Skull named other characters' biological parents when arriving on Vormir, he neglected to do so for Gamora. Thanos stole Gamora from her homeworld when she was a child, but one theory posed by Shaneathan25 suggests Gamora may subconsciously view Thanos as her father, perhaps as a form of Stockholm Syndrome.
Gamora was kidnapped and raised to be the perfect weapon, but came to view her abductor as her father, despite vocally renouncing this idea many times. This tragic detail could explain why the Red Skull named Thanos as Gamora's father, which makes her sacrifice even more heartbreaking.

The next people to appear on Vormir after Thanos and Gamora in the MCU were Clint Barton's Hawkeye and Natasha Romanoff's Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame. The original Avengers too meet the Red Skull, and he names Barton as the son of Edith, and Romanoff as the daughter of Ivan, despite the fact that Black Widow never actually knew her biological parents.
Romanoff and Gamora's storylines were similar, as both were taken at a young age and raised to be weapons, though while Gamora viewed Thanos as her father, Natasha Romanoff never established this connection with her own surrogate family.
2021's Black Widow delved deeper into Natasha Romanoff's backstory, and revealed that she had built a familial connection with Yelena Belova, Melina Vostokoff and Alexei Shostakov, with the latter acting as her father figure. The fact that the Red Skull named Romanoff's biological father, however, and not Shostakov, suggests that Romanoff has more humanity and empathy, as she is perhaps better connected to her true lineage, rather than looking for a replacement. This makes Black Widow's sacrifice more harrowing, as she dies never knowing her heritage, while Gamora's familial connection to Thanos in
Avengers: Infinity War may be more complicated.
